This document outlines the operation, maintenance, and safety guidelines for the SYMBA 110 (MB10A7 Series) scooter, a 4-stroke, air-cooled 101.4 c.c. vehicle designed for use in the United States and Canada.
The SYMBA 110 is a scooter designed for personal transportation. Its primary function is to provide a means of travel, with features aimed at user convenience and safety. The scooter is equipped with a speedometer to indicate speed in both miles per hour (outer-mph) and kilometers per hour (km/h-inner), an odometer to track total accumulated distance traveled, and a gear indicator that shows the current gear when the main switch is ON. High beam and turn signal indicators provide visual cues for lighting and signaling. A fuel gauge helps monitor fuel levels, with a warning to refill when the needle reaches the "E" band.
The scooter utilizes a 4-speed gear change system with a wet multi-plate, auto centrifugal clutch. Braking is managed by drum-type brakes on both the front and rear wheels, which should be applied simultaneously for effective stopping. An engine brake function is also available by returning the throttle valve handle to its original position.
Starting the engine can be done either electrically or with a kick starter pedal. The electrical starter button requires the main switch to be "ON" and either the front or rear brake lever to be held. The kick starter pedal requires a forceful push with the throttle handle at the closed position, or slightly open if the engine is cold.
Operating the SYMBA 110 involves several key features. The ignition switch has "ON," "OFF," and "LOCK" positions. "ON" allows the engine to start, "OFF" shuts it down, and "LOCK" secures the handlebar. It's crucial not to operate the ignition switch to "OFF" or "LOCK" while the scooter is running, as this can lead to dangerous accidents.
The throttle valve handle controls acceleration and deceleration. Turning it slowly increases power, while returning it to its original position decreases speed. The gear operation is left foot-operated, with a four-gear rotary, constant mesh gearbox. Riders are advised to shift down in heavy traffic, uphill, or when turning, and to use lower gears for engine braking when going downhill.
Parking the scooter requires finding a safe area, observing traffic laws, returning the throttle to its original position, and applying brakes. After stopping, the turn signal should be turned off, and the ignition switch set to "OFF." The main parking stand should be used, and the steering handle locked to prevent theft.
Safety is emphasized throughout the manual. Riders are instructed to always wear a correctly fastened DOT-approved helmet, suitable protective clothing, and eyewear. Operating the scooter under the influence of drugs or alcohol, or in a state of physical fatigue or drowsiness, is prohibited. Riders should slow down on slippery surfaces, unfamiliar terrain, and when visibility is reduced. Overloading the scooter or placing objects on the front pedals is discouraged as it can affect stability and handling.
The break-in procedure for new scooters, covering the first 1,000 km (600 miles), advises avoiding full throttle operation and selecting gear changes to minimize engine stress, thereby extending the engine's service life.
Regular inspection and maintenance are crucial for the SYMBA 110's performance and longevity. The manual provides a routine inspection checklist covering engine oil, fuel, brakes, clutch, tires, steering handle, speedometer, lights, rearview mirror, and the tightness of main components. Any problems found during routine inspection should be corrected by an authorized SYM dealer or service personnel.
Engine Oil: Inspection involves checking the oil level with the scooter on level ground after the engine has been stopped for 3-5 minutes. The oil level should be between the upper and lower marks on the dipstick. Oil changes are recommended after the first 200 miles, then every 600 miles. The oil filter's paper element should be changed every 3,100 miles. The recommended engine oil is SYM Genuine EXTRA 4X OIL, API SH, SAE 10w-40 grade or better.
Fuel: The scooter uses unleaded gasoline of Octane No. 90 or higher. Fuel levels should be checked with the main switch "ON." Refueling should be done with the main stand down and the engine off, keeping flames away from the scooter. The fuel tank should not be filled above the upper limit.
Spark Plug: The spark plug should be checked for dirt or carbon deposits. Carbon deposits should be removed with steel wire, and the spark plug cleaned. The electrode gap should be adjusted to 0.6-0.7 mm.
Brakes: Brake lever free play for both front and rear wheels should be checked (10-20mm for hand-brake lever, 20-30mm for foot brake panel). If the brake lining is excessively worn, it must be replaced. After adjustment, the scooter should be tested on a dry road surface at slow speed.
Drive Chain: The drive chain should be checked for wear and tension. Slack should be approximately 10-20 mm (1/2-1/3 in) and a lubricant applied if dry.
Battery: Electrolyte levels should be maintained between upper and lower marks, adding distilled water if low. Battery terminals should be cleaned if dirty or corroded. The battery specification is 12 V 5 Ah.
Tires: Tires should be checked for cracks, damage, nails, or small stones. Tread groove depth should be sufficient, and tires with a wear bar showing must be replaced. Tire pressure must be checked with an air pressure gauge when cold.
Shock Absorbers: Front shock absorbers should be visually checked for damage, and the steering handle operated up and down to check for noises or bends. Bolts and nuts of the front shock absorbers should be tight.
Fuses: Fuses should be checked and replaced with the recommended 7A fuse if burnt out. The fuse holder is located near the battery.
Lights and Horn: Turn signal lights, front and rear lights, and the brake light should be checked for proper operation. Only specified bulbs should be used to avoid affecting the electrical system.
The manual also includes a "Safety Defect Report" section, advising users to contact the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) if they believe their vehicle has a defect that could cause a crash, injury, or death, in addition to notifying Sanyang Industry Co., Ltd. NHTSA contact information is provided.
