The Symmons Dia Trim Series is a collection of shower and tub/shower trims designed for residential and commercial installations. This manual provides installation and operation instructions for the Dia Trim Series, including models with the TA-10 Flow Control Spindle and T-12A Cap Assembly.
Function Description:
The Symmons Dia Trim Series offers a range of options for controlling water flow and temperature in showers and tub/showers. The core function revolves around a pressure-balancing valve (Temptrol) that maintains a consistent water temperature, preventing sudden scalding or freezing. The trims include various components such as showerheads, shower arms, flanges, handles, dome covers, escutcheons, screws, mounting plates, diverter/volume control handles, tub spouts, slide bar assemblies, hand showers, wall elbows, and hoses, depending on the specific model.
Models ending in "TRM" are trim-only packages, while models ending in "TRMTC" include the TA-10 Flow Control Spindle and T-12A Cap Assembly, which are factory assembled with the Temptrol pressure balancing valve. The TA-10 Flow Control Spindle allows for precise control over water volume, while the T-12A Cap Assembly is integral for system pressurization during installation.
Important Technical Specifications:
- Compliance: All models comply with ASME A112.18.1/CSA B125.1 standards, ensuring safety and performance.
- Pressure Testing: The test cap (part of the T-12A Cap Assembly) is rated for pressure testing up to 200 psi maximum. It is crucial not to exceed this limit during testing.
- Temperature Limit Stop Screw: This feature allows users to set a maximum hot water temperature, preventing scalding. Proper adjustment is critical for safety.
- Thread Specifications:
- Male 1/2-14 NPT thread for shower pipe connection must be recessed 1/4" (6 mm) from the finished wall.
- Male 1/2-14 NPT thread for tub spout connection must protrude 4-7/16" (113 mm) from the finished wall.
- Rough-in Dimensions (for models with tub spout):
- Showerhead diameter: Ø 2-1/2" (64 mm)
- Shower arm length: 6-3/4" (171 mm)
- Shower arm projection from wall: 6" (152 mm)
- Overall height (Ref.): 77" (1956 mm)
- Distance from rough-in to tub spout outlet: 32" (813 mm)
- Escutcheon diameter: Ø 7-1/2" (191 mm)
- Rough-in depth: 2-3/8" ± 1/2" (60 mm ± 13 mm)
- Tub spout projection: 7" (178 mm)
- Rough-in Dimensions (for models without tub spout):
- Distance from rough-in to showerhead: 42" (1067 mm)
- Slide Bar Assembly:
- Slide bar diameter: Ø 2-1/2" (64 mm)
- Slide bar length: 12" (305 mm)
- Distance from wall to center of slide bar: 3" (76 mm)
- Slide bar bracket projection: 2-7/8" (73 mm)
- Hose Length: 60" (1524 mm) for hand shower models.
- Materials: Components are available in brass (e.g., Shower Escutcheon RTS-009, Diverter/Volume Control Handle RTS-013) and plastic (e.g., Shower Escutcheon RTS-010, Diverter/Volume Control Handle RTS-014).
- Vacuum Breaker: An in-line vacuum breaker (EF-109) is required for hand shower systems without dual checks.
Usage Features:
- Temperature Control: The shower handle allows for precise temperature adjustment. Turning it counter-clockwise approximately 1/4 turn sets it to the cold position, 1/2 turn to the warm position, and 3/4 turn to the hot position. The temperature limit stop screw can be set to prevent the handle from turning past a desired maximum hot temperature.
- VersaFlex™ Diverter Control: For models with a diverter, the diverter control handle allows users to switch water flow between the tub spout (or other Symmons accessory) and the shower (or other Symmons accessory). Turning clockwise diverts to the tub spout/accessory, and counter-clockwise diverts to the shower/accessory.
- Volume Control: The volume control handle allows users to adjust the water flow rate. Turning it clockwise increases volume, and counter-clockwise decreases volume.
- Hand Shower Functionality: Models with a hand shower offer flexibility for targeted rinsing. The slide bar assembly allows for height adjustment of the hand shower.
- Easy Installation: The manual provides detailed, step-by-step instructions for installing the shower valve trim, showerhead, tub spout, and slide bar assembly, including options for dry wall and stud mounting.
Maintenance Features:
- Packing Nut Adjustment: The packing nut can be tightened to ensure positive frictional resistance when rotating the handle, preventing looseness over time.
- Cleaning: For finish spotting, the recommended solution is to clean the finished trim area with a soft cloth using mild soap and water or a non-abrasive cleaner, followed by a quick rinse with water.
- Flushing: If the water system is dirty, the valve should be flushed after removing the test cap and before installing the flow control spindle and cap assembly.
- Warranty:
- Limited Lifetime Warranty: Applies to the original end purchaser in consumer/residential installations.
- 5-Year Warranty: Applies to industrial/commercial installations.
- Warranty information and product registration are available on the Symmons website.
Important Warnings:
- Pressure Testing: Do not exceed 200 psi when pressure testing the valve body.
- Heat Exposure: Do not expose the valve with the test cap to heat for longer than 2 minutes when soldering copper tubing, as this can damage internal components and void the warranty.
- Test Cap Re-torque: Ensure the test cap is re-torqued to 30 lb-ft after soldering the valve body.
- Limit Stop Screw: Failure to adjust the limit stop screw properly may result in serious scalding.
- Chemical Exposure: The product may expose users to chemicals including lead, which is known to the state of California to cause cancer, birth defects, or other reproductive harm. Users are advised to refer to www.P65Warnings.ca.gov for more information.
