Overview

The Symmons Duro Trim Series is a collection of bath and shower fixtures designed for both residential and commercial installations, offering a blend of functionality and modern aesthetic. The series includes various trim options for different shower and tub configurations, all designed to work with the TA-10 Flow Control Spindle and T-12A Cap Assembly.

Function Description:

The core function of the Duro Trim Series is to provide precise control over water temperature and flow in showering and bathing environments. The system utilizes a pressure-balancing valve (Temptrol, not included with trim) to maintain a consistent water temperature, preventing sudden scalding or chilling due to pressure fluctuations in the hot or cold water supply. This is achieved through the TA-10 Flow Control Spindle, which regulates water flow, and the T-12A Cap Assembly, which houses the spindle and allows for easy access for maintenance.

The various trim options cater to different needs:

  • Shower Valve Trim (S-3600-TRM / S3600TRMTC): Controls water flow and temperature for a single showerhead.
  • Shower Trim (S-3601-TRM / S3601TRMTC): Similar to the shower valve trim, focusing on shower-only installations.
  • Tub/Shower Trim (S-3602-TRM / S3602TRMTC): Provides control for both a tub spout and a showerhead, often with a diverter function.
  • Tub/Hand Shower Trim (S-3604-H321-V-TRM / S3604H321TRMTC): Offers control for a tub spout and a hand shower, providing flexibility for targeted rinsing.
  • Shower/Hand Shower Trim (S3608TRM / S3608TRMTC): Manages water for a showerhead and a hand shower, ideal for versatile showering experiences.

The system incorporates a temperature limit stop screw, which is a crucial safety feature. This screw can be adjusted during installation to prevent the valve handle from being turned beyond a desired maximum hot water temperature, thereby mitigating the risk of scalding.

Usage Features:

The Duro Trim Series is designed for intuitive operation, allowing users to easily control water temperature and volume.

  • Temperature Control: The shower handle operates counter-clockwise to adjust temperature. Turning it approximately 1/4 turn puts the valve in the cold position, 1/2 turn for warm, and 3/4 turn for hot. This progressive rotation provides fine-tuned temperature selection.
  • VersaFlex™ Diverter Control: For models with diverter functionality (e.g., tub/shower or shower/hand shower trims), a dedicated diverter control handle is used. Turning this handle clockwise typically diverts water to the tub spout or another Symmons accessory, while turning it counter-clockwise diverts water to the shower or another Symmons accessory. This allows for seamless switching between different water outlets.
  • Volume Control: A separate volume control handle, where present, allows users to increase or decrease the water flow. Turning the handle clockwise increases the volume, and turning it counter-clockwise decreases it, providing control over water intensity.
  • Hand Shower Systems: Many trims include or are compatible with hand shower systems, which typically feature a slide bar assembly for adjustable height positioning of the hand shower. This enhances user comfort and allows for targeted rinsing. The hand shower hose connects to a wall elbow, and an in-line vacuum breaker (EF-109) may be ordered for hand shower systems without dual checks to prevent backflow.
  • Showerhead and Tub Spout: The showerheads are designed for easy installation onto a shower arm and flange, while tub spouts are installed onto a stub out pipe. All threaded connections require plumber's tape for a secure, leak-free seal.
  • Aesthetic Integration: The trim components, including the mounting plate, shower escutcheon, dome cover, and handles, are designed to fit together seamlessly, creating a clean and finished look on the wall. Silicone sealant is recommended around the perimeter of all shower trim installed flush to the finished wall, with an opening left at the bottom of escutcheons for weep holes to prevent moisture buildup.

Maintenance Features:

The design of the Duro Trim Series incorporates features that facilitate ease of installation and maintenance, ensuring long-term performance and user satisfaction.

  • Test Cap (for TRMTC models): Models ending in "TRMTC" come factory-assembled with a Test Cap. This cap is crucial during the initial stages of construction and installation, allowing the plumbing system to be pressurized and checked for leaks without the trim components being installed. It is rated for pressure testing up to 200 psi maximum and should not be removed until the system is ready for trim installation. Important warnings are provided regarding pressure limits and heat exposure during soldering to prevent damage to internal valve components. After soldering, the test cap must be re-torqued to 30 lb-ft.
  • Easy Trim Installation: The installation process for the shower valve trim involves securing a mounting plate, placing the diverter/volume control handle into the escutcheon, securing the escutcheon, installing a dome cover, and finally attaching the main handle with a set screw. This modular approach simplifies assembly.
  • Packing Nut Adjustment: The packing nut, located on the flow control spindle, can be tightened to achieve positive frictional resistance when the handle is rotated. This adjustment helps maintain the desired feel and prevents the handle from being too loose or too stiff.
  • Limit Stop Screw Adjustment: As a safety feature, the temperature limit stop screw can be adjusted to prevent excessive hot water discharge temperatures. This adjustment is performed after turning on hot and cold supplies and opening the valve to the maximum desired temperature, then turning the screw clockwise until it seats.
  • Troubleshooting: A basic troubleshooting chart is provided to address common issues like "finish spotting." The recommended solution involves cleaning the finished trim area with a soft cloth, mild soap and water, or a non-abrasive cleaner, followed by a quick rinse. This highlights the importance of proper cleaning to maintain the product's appearance.
  • Warranty: The product comes with a Limited Lifetime warranty for consumer/residential installations and a 5-year warranty for industrial/commercial installations. This demonstrates the manufacturer's confidence in the product's durability and provides assurance to the purchaser. Registration of the product is encouraged for warranty purposes.
  • Parts Breakdown: Detailed parts breakdowns for both the internal components (Cap Assy. T-12A, Flow Control Spindle TA-10) and external trim components (showerhead, shower arm, flange, handles, escutcheon, mounting plate, tub spout, slide bar, hand shower, wall elbow, hose) are provided, making it easier to identify and order replacement parts if needed.
