II. Engine With Choke and Without Primer Bulb IlL Engine With Choke and Primer Bulb
1. To avoid carbon mono_ddepoisoning,make sure engine
isoutdoorsin a well-ventilatedarea.
2. Move engine throttlecontrolto "CHOKE" or "START"
ifpresent (see equipment manufacturer'sinstructions).
See Figures 7, 9 or 10.
NOTE
If restartinga warm engine after a short shutdown, move en-
gine throttle control to "FAST" iostead of "CHOKE"or"START"
position. See Figures 7, 9 or 10.
3. Operate equipment controlto release engine brake or
clutch, if present (see equipment manufacturer's
instructions).See Figure 10.
_'__ When pullingstarter rope,the ropecan
unexpectedlyjerk back toward engine
causing sedous injury. To avoidthis dsk, carefullyfollow
these instructions:
4. Grasp starter cord handle. See Figure 10.
a. Pullrope out slowly untilyou feel drag.
b. Without allowing the rope to retract, continue
pulling rope with one rapidfull arm stroke.
c. Retum rope slowlyto odginalposition.
NOTE
Following the instructions listed in the steps above avoids
potential damage to the recoil mechanism.
5. If engine fails to start after 3 attempts repeat steps 2
thru4 and try again.
6. When engine starts:
a. Move engine throttle control to "FAST' position.
b. Next, move engine throttle control to desired speed
in "RUN" range.
NOTES
ffengine starts but falters when engine throttle control ismoved
to "FAST" position:
a. Move engine throttle control back to "CHOKE"
position.
b. Next, move engine throttle control to "FAST"
position.
ff engine dies after engine throttle control is moved to "FAST"
position, repeat steps 2 thru 6 to restart engine.
7. If engine fires but does not continueto run, move
engine throttlecontrol to"FAST" positionand start
engine.
8.
9,
Ifengine fails to start after 3 attempts in the "FAST"
position, move engine throttle controlto "CHOKE"
position and start engine.
If engine does not start after following steps 1 thru 8,
contact your Authorized Tecumseh Servicing Dealer.
DO NOT attempt to start or troubleshoot this engine in
any other way.

In Temperatures above 40°F (-5 °C):
Follow instructionsin Section Aol (Engine with Primer Bulb
and Without Choke).
In Temperatures below 40°F (-5 °C):
1. To avoid carbon monoxidepoisoning, make sureengine
isoutdoorsin a well-ventilatedarea.
2.
3.
Move enginethrottle controlto"CHOKE" or "START"
ifpresent (see equipment manufacturer's instructions).
See Figures 7, 9 or 10.
When startinga cold engine, push primer bulb firmly
with your thumb 3 times, allowingpdmer bulbto retum
completely to original positionbetween pushes. See
Figure6.
NOTES
Cooler temperatures may require pushing primer bulb firmly
with your thumb 5 times.
DO NOT use choke or primerto restart a warm engine after a
short shutdown. Doing so will flood the engine and may result
in equipment malfunction.
4. Operate equipment controlto release engine brake or
clutch,if present (see equipment manufacturer's
instructions).See Figure 10.
I_1_ When pulling starter rope, the rope can
unexpectedlyjerk back toward engine
causing serious injury. To avoid this dsk, carefully follow
