Do you have a question about the Thermo Scientific 2032 and is the answer not in the manual?

Overview

The Thermo Scientific Forma Plasma Thawing Bath, available in Models 2032 and 2036, is designed for the rapid and controlled thawing of plasma and red cell units. This operating and maintenance manual provides comprehensive instructions for its installation, operation, and routine service.

Function Description

The primary function of the Forma Plasma Thawing Bath is to thaw plasma units and red cell units efficiently and safely. The Model 2032 is designed to thaw 1 to 8 standard plasma units in approximately 25 minutes, or 4 red cell units in about 12 minutes. The bath utilizes a circulating water system to ensure uniform temperature distribution, which is crucial for preventing damage to blood products during thawing. A safety thermostat is integrated to prevent overheating, and a mechanical timer helps operators manage thawing times.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Models: 2032 and 2036
  • Operating Temperature: The bath temperature can be set to 37°C with a fixed setpoint switch or adjusted to any desired temperature between 5°C above ambient and 60°C using a variable setpoint control. The temperature control maintains the bath temperature to within ±0.1°C of the setpoint.
  • Capacity: 7.6 gallons (28.8 liters)
  • Exterior Dimensions: 30.5" W x 16.3" H x 12.8" F-B (77.5 cm x 41.4 cm x 41.7 cm)
  • Interior Dimensions: 16.7" W x 8.0" H x 12.8" F-B (42.4 cm x 20.3 cm x 32.5 cm)
  • Heat Source: Low watt density silicone heater (1200W)
  • Circulation: Stainless steel pump
  • Electrical (Model 2032): 120VAC, 1 PH, 60Hz, 11 FLA
  • Electrical (Model 2036): 220VAC, 1 PH, 50/60Hz, 7 FLA
  • Shipping Weight (Model 2032/2036):
    • Ocean: 145 lbs. (66 kg)
    • Air: 134 lbs. (61 kg)
    • Motor: 79 lbs. (36 kg)
  • Temperature Monitor: Overtemp safety thermostat
  • Construction: Stainless steel pan

Usage Features

  • Temperature Control: The bath offers both a fixed 37°C setpoint and a variable temperature control. The "Variable/37C" switch allows users to select between these modes. In variable mode, the temperature control knob can be adjusted to any value between 5°C above ambient and 60°C.
  • Overtemp Safety Thermostat: This critical safety feature prevents the bath temperature from exceeding a set limit. It is manually set slightly above the desired operating temperature. If an overtemp condition occurs, the safety control indicator light illuminates, power to the heaters is shut off, and the bath temperature is maintained at the overtemp control point. The overtemp control knob has a scale from 0 to 10 for reference, but it is not directly calibrated to specific temperatures.
  • Circulation Pump: The bath includes a circulation pump to ensure uniform temperature distribution within the water. The pump should be turned on during operation to achieve optimal thawing times and temperature uniformity. A "Pump On" indicator light confirms the pump is running.
  • Mechanical Timer: A mechanical timer, located on the control panel, allows operators to set thawing times up to 30 minutes. A bell rings when the set time has elapsed. For settings under five minutes, the dial must first be turned past the 5-minute mark and then reversed to the desired setting.
  • Plasma Thawing Racks: The bath can accommodate two plasma thawing racks. These racks rest on ledges inside the tank and include clips to hold plasma units in place.
  • Red Cell Canister Rack (Optional): An optional rack is available for thawing red cell canisters. When using this rack, it is crucial to ensure that the canister drain hole faces down on the closed end of the rack to prevent heat damage to the red cells from direct contact with the heated bottom of the bath.
  • Thermometer: A thermometer is provided and installed in a holder on the top of the bath work area for monitoring the bath temperature.
  • Filling and Emptying: The bath should be filled with water having a quality of 50K to 1M Ohm to protect the stainless steel tank and prolong its life. The tank capacity is approximately 5.3 gallons. A drain connection with a removable nipple cap is located on the back of the unit for emptying the bath. Tipping the bath to empty it is explicitly prohibited.
  • Power Connection: The unit connects to an adequate power source, with specific electrical requirements for Models 2032 (120VAC, 1PH, 60Hz, 11FLA) and 2036 (220VAC, 1PH, 50/60Hz, 7FLA). The main power switch controls electrical power to all bath systems.

Maintenance Features

  • Routine Cleaning: The bath should be cleaned thoroughly at least once a month.
    • Exterior Cleaning: The exterior can be cleaned with soap and water or a non-abrasive commercial spray cleaner.
    • Interior Cleaning: The interior should be disinfected with a general-purpose laboratory disinfectant, followed by rinsing with 50K to 1M Ohm quality water. Chlorinated solvents should not be used on stainless steel as they can cause rusting and pitting.
    • Cleaning Procedure: This involves disconnecting power, draining the liquid, removing the baffle screen (secured by two screws), clearing debris, refilling with water and a low concentration of cleaner/disinfectant, running the bath for 5-10 minutes, scrubbing the interior and probes, cleaning the pump outlet with a bottle brush, draining, rinsing, and refilling.
  • Pump Cleaning and Replacement: Special cleaning of the pump may be necessary. The pump can be removed by unplugging it and removing four screws. The pump motor should not be immersed in water, and the pump should not be run when not installed in the liquid-filled bath. Replacement of the pump (part #901249) involves reversing the removal procedure.
  • Overtemp Thermostat and/or Probe Replacement: This service procedure requires qualified personnel. It involves loosening a setscrew, removing screws securing the thermostat assembly, disconnecting wires, removing the baffle screen, and detaching the copper capillary from the bath floor. The replacement probe is part #270017. Care must be taken not to bend the capillary tube to less than a one-inch radius.
  • Temperature Probe Replacement: This also requires qualified service personnel. It involves draining the bath, opening the control access door, locating the probe, loosening the compression fitting, disconnecting lead connections, and replacing the probe (part #240101) and compression ferrule (part #380136).
  • Variable Setpoint Controller Check and Calibration: This procedure ensures the accuracy of the variable temperature setting. It involves setting the switch to "Variable" and the knob to 37°C, placing a calibrating thermometer in the bath, checking for discrepancies, and adjusting the knob's set screw if needed.
  • 37C Setpoint Calibration: This calibration is necessary if the stabilized fluid temperature at the 37C setpoint varies from a calibrating thermometer. It involves setting the switch to "37C," suspending a calibrating thermometer, and adjusting a calibration screw on the control panel to fine-tune the temperature.
