The AIR CADET® Pump is a diaphragm-operated pump designed for pressure, suction, and gas circulating applications. It is available in two models: 420-1901 and 420-1902. The pump's design, featuring a convoluted diaphragm and a unique pump cavity, aims to extend diaphragm life by minimizing stress, wear, and heat buildup while optimizing pressure and vacuum characteristics.
Function Description:
The pump is primarily used for generating pressure, suction, and circulating gases. It is suitable for both industrial and commercial applications. The media being pumped comes into contact with specific materials: VALOX®, FLUOREL®, DACRON®, and VITON®, which provide enhanced chemical resistance compared to conventional aluminum or stainless steel pumps. Polyethylene fittings are supplied, designed to accept 3/8 inch I.D. flexible tubing. The motor is painted with an epoxy paint for added durability.

Usage Features:
- Grounding: Both models require proper grounding to prevent electric shock. Model 420-1901 comes with a three-prong grounded plug for 120-volt circuits. Model 420-1902 requires a qualified electrician to install the appropriate plug and electrical outlet.
- Extension Cords: For 120V circuits, use a 3-wire extension cord with a 3-blade grounding plug and a 3-slot receptacle. Ensure the cord is in good condition and adequately sized (e.g., No. 18 AWG, 3 conductor up to 100 feet) to prevent voltage drop and overheating.
- Fittings Assembly: Wrap PTFE sealing tape around fitting threads and hand-tighten, then give one more turn with a wrench. Do not overtighten. Only use plastic fittings; metal fittings are not recommended.
- Operation: The pump should always be started without load (both ports open to atmosphere). If a vacuum or pressure exists, the pump may not start.
- Noise Reduction: A muffler can be used at the outlet to reduce noise. Three-foot lengths of tubing at both ends are generally sufficient for quiet operation.
- Air Filtration: If pumping dirty air or gas, an air filter is recommended to prevent dust and particles from collecting at valve seats, which can interfere with proper seating and reduce performance.
- Flow Control: Sudden changes in tubing diameter, fittings, bends, or other obstructions will increase pressure/vacuum and decrease flow. Intentional flow reduction can be achieved by a valve or by pinching the tube at the inlet (preferred for diaphragm life) or outlet.
- Safety Precautions:
- Do not use gas under pressure as a supply; only gases at atmospheric pressure should be used to avoid hazardous bursting conditions.
- Do not operate the pump when pressure ports of both heads are blocked.
- The motor runs fairly hot during normal operation, which is considered normal.
- The motor includes an internal thermal overload switch. If it trips, allow the motor to cool for approximately 30 minutes before restarting and check the pump for any issues.
- Storage: Store the pump in a clean, dry area when not in use. Cover open ports to prevent dust and dirt entry. Inspect the power cord for cracks after each use and repair any defects before reusing.
Maintenance Features:
- Regular Maintenance: The brushless motor with sealed ball bearings requires no regular maintenance.
- Cleaning: Keep the pump enclosure clean using a mild detergent solution. Do not immerse the pump or use excessive fluid during cleaning.
- Diaphragm Replacement:
- Unplug the power cord before any cleaning or maintenance.
- To replace the diaphragm, disassemble the top part of the Pump Head, unscrew the old diaphragm, and install the new one.
- It is good practice to replace the entire Pump Head when replacing the diaphragm to ensure new, clean valves and maximum performance. Dirty valves can reduce performance.
- Do not disassemble the pump housing from the motor, as proper factory-adjusted assembly is crucial for performance.
