Overview

The Vacuum/Pressure Station, available in Model No. 420-3901 (115V AC) and Model No. 420-3902 (230V AC), is a portable, bench-top device designed to provide regulated vacuum and/or pressure for laboratory or commercial use. It features independently regulated functions, with clearly identified valves and an easy-to-read compound function gauge, eliminating the need for complex plumbing.

Function Description:

The station serves as a convenient source of regulated vacuum and pressure. Its core component is a pump with a convoluted diaphragm and a unique head cavity, engineered for extended diaphragm life by minimizing stress, wear, and heat buildup while optimizing pressure and vacuum characteristics. The pump motor is brushless, totally enclosed, thermally protected, and features sealed ball bearings, requiring no regular maintenance. The unit is supplied with a six-foot, three-conductor power supply cord, and the 115V AC motor is U.L. recognized.

The device is designed to be started without load (both ports open to atmosphere). If a vacuum or pressure already exists, the pump may not start. For pressure delivery, the manifold port labeled "TO PUMP" connects to the pump port "FOR PRESSURE" via a 9-inch tube, with pressure regulated by the "PRESSURE ADJUST" valve. The "INPUT/OUTPUT" port connects to containers for pressurized air or gas. If a medium other than ambient air is to be pressurized, its source should connect to the pump inlet port "FOR VACUUM." For drawing a regulated vacuum, the source of supply connects to the "INPUT/OUTPUT" port, and the "TO PUMP" port connects to the pump inlet "FOR VACUUM." Before disconnecting tubing after pressure delivery, all pressures must be relieved by stopping the pump and gradually turning the "PRESSURE ADJUST" valve screw counterclockwise until the gauge reads zero.

  • Humidity Range: 10% to 90% non-condensing.
  • Altitude: Less than 2000 m.
  • Pollution Degree: 2 (Indoor usage - lab, office).
  • Enclosure Rating: IP 20 per IEC 60529.
  • Weight: 4.1 kg (9 lbs).
  • Compliance (for 230V CE Mark): EN61010-1 (EU Low Voltage Directive) and EN61326 (EU EMC Directive).
  • Materials in contact with service:
    • Pump: VALOX® (polyester), DACRON® and FKM rubber.
    • Manifold chamber and fittings: PVC, silicone, linear polyethylene and stainless steel 303.
    • Pressure/Vacuum Gauge: Bronze tubing and brass socket.

Usage Features:

  • Grounding: The pump must always be plugged into a grounded outlet. Both models come with a grounded plug and an on-off rocker switch. Improper use of the grounding plug can result in electric shock. Temporary adapters may be used if a properly grounded outlet is unavailable, but a permanent grounded outlet should be installed by a qualified electrician.
  • Extension Cords: Use only 3-wire extension cords with a 3-blade grounding plug and 3-slot receptacle. The cord should be heavy enough to carry the current, with No. 18 AWG, 3 conductor up to 100 feet recommended.
  • Safety Warnings:
    • Gas under pressure should not be used for supply as it can lead to a hazardous bursting condition in the pump head. Only gases at atmospheric pressure should be used.
    • Do not operate the pump when pressure ports of both heads are blocked.
    • Do not use metal fittings with any Air Cadet Pump.
  • Overload Protection: The motor includes an internal thermal overload switch. If it trips, allow the motor to cool for approximately 30 minutes before restarting. If it trips again, the unit should be returned for repair.
  • Dual Line Operation: The plastic pipe plug in the "AUXILIARY" port can be replaced with a 1/4 NPT male pipe thread fitting to draw vacuum or pressurize two lines simultaneously. Pipe thread sealant or tape should be used for a leak-free fit.
  • Valve Adjustment: Regulation valves can be adjusted with a narrow, flat instrument like a small coin or key if a screwdriver is unavailable.

Maintenance Features:

  • Diaphragm Replacement: The pump head's top part can be disassembled to replace the diaphragm. It is recommended to replace the entire pump head when replacing the diaphragm to ensure new, clean valves and maximum performance. Dirty valves reduce performance.
  • Valve Inspection: Regulation valves should be occasionally inspected for contamination. Remove the adjustment screw, spring, and ball from each valve body to check for dirt or grit around venting holes and seating surfaces. Clean with a cotton swab or clean cloth.
  • O-ring Replacement: If vacuum cannot be regulated, the O-ring in the "VACUUM ADJUST" valve may be damaged. It can be replaced with Part No. B-1169-0011.
  • Reassembly Caution: When disassembling regulation valves, be careful not to lose the valve ball and spring. For the "VACUUM ADJUST" valve, the spring goes in first, followed by the ball and adjustment screw. For the "PRESSURE ADJUST" valve, the ball goes in before the spring.
  • Pump Head Serviceability: The station is designed so the pump head can be serviced without removing the pump from the station.
  • Cleaning: The pump enclosure should be cleaned with a mild detergent solution. Never immerse the pump or use excessive fluid.
  • Storage: When not in use, store the pump in a clean, dry area. Cover open ports to prevent dust and dirt entry. Wipe the power cord with a dry towel and inspect for cracks in insulation after each use. Repair defective cords before reusing.
  • Factory Assembly: Do not disassemble the pump housing from the motor, as proper (factory-adjusted) assembly is crucial for performance.
