Overview

This document describes the Torin Big Red Long Ram Jack, a lifting device designed for various applications.

Function Description:

The Torin Big Red Long Ram Jack is primarily designed for lifting and positioning vehicles, machinery, houses, and other building structures. It can be used vertically or angled up to 3 degrees from a vertical position. After lifting, loads must be immediately supported by appropriate means, such as appropriately rated jack stands. For air-actuated models, the air source should have a working range of 100-120 PSI. The jack has been tested for reliability and safety to meet ASME PASE standards.

Important Technical Specifications:

The manual provides a table of technical specifications for various models, including:

  • Item: Describes the specific model (e.g., 3 Ton Long Ram Jack (Flat Bottom), 5 Ton Long Ram Jack Double Piston (Clevis Bottom), 8 Ton Long Ram Jack (Air/Hydraulic) (Clevis Bottom)).
  • Maximum Capacity Lbs: Ranges from 6,000 lbs to 16,000 lbs depending on the model.
  • Minimum Height Inch: Ranges from 24 inches to 24-3/8 inches.
  • Maximum Height Inch: Ranges from 42-15/16 inches to 44-1/8 inches.
  • Maximum Capacity KG: Ranges from 2,727 kg to 7,272 kg.
  • Minimum Height MM: Ranges from 610 mm to 620 mm.
  • Maximum Height MM: Ranges from 1090 mm to 1120 mm.

The safe operating temperature for the jack is between 40°F – 105°F (4°C - 41°C).

Usage Features:

  • Assembly: The manual details the assembly process, which involves familiarizing oneself with the jack components (ram, top mounting point, oil reservoir, oil fill, oil plug, handle socket, handle, clevis point) and turning the release valve counterclockwise to the open position. The handle is then inserted into the handle socket.
  • System Air Purge Procedure (Before First Use): This crucial step removes air introduced into the hydraulic system during shipment. It involves turning the release valve counterclockwise to the open position, rapidly pumping the handle 6-8 times, and for units with rubber oil plugs, pushing the oil fill plug slightly to purge trapped air. Finally, the release valve is turned clockwise to the closed position.
  • Operation (Raising the Jack):
    1. Position the jack near the desired lift point.
    2. Assemble the handle, ensuring it aligns with the handle socket.
    3. Close the release valve by turning it clockwise until firmly closed.
    4. Verify the load is centered and has full contact with the lifting point.
    5. Pump the handle or squeeze the air trigger (for air/hydraulic models) to lift the load. Stop pumping when the ram reaches the red stop mark to prevent malfunction.
  • Operation (Lowering the Jack):
    1. Grasp the handle firmly with both hands, ensuring a secure grip.
    2. Carefully open the release valve by slowly turning the handle counterclockwise. Do not allow bystanders near the jack or under the load.
    3. After removing the jack, push the ram and handle sleeve down to reduce exposure to rust and contamination. Extreme caution is advised during lowering, as opening the release valve too fast can cause rapid lowering and potential injury or death.
  • Safety Markings and Warnings:
    • Always use jack stands immediately after lifting.
    • Do not exceed rated capacity.
    • Use only on hard, level surfaces with less than 3 degrees of slope.
    • This is a lifting device only; do not move or dolly the vehicle while on the jack.
    • Lift only on areas specified by the vehicle manufacturer.
    • No alterations should be made to the product.
    • Only manufacturer-supplied attachments/adapters should be used.
    • Never go under a vehicle not supported by jack stands.
    • Center the load on the saddle prior to lifting.
    • Use wheel chocks or other blocking devices on opposing wheels.
    • Do not use on lawn mowers or lawn tractors.
    • Do not use for purposes other than specified by the manufacturer.
    • Do not rock the vehicle while working on or around equipment.
    • Not recommended for supporting foundations, homes, mobile homes, trailers, RV's, campers, or fifth wheels.
    • Wear ANSI-approved safety glasses and heavy-duty work gloves.
    • Do not adjust the safety valve.
    • Stay alert and use common sense; do not operate when tired, incoherent, dizzy, or under the influence of drugs/alcohol.
    • Read the manual before use; do not allow untrained individuals to use the jack.
    • Keep bystanders away from the jack and vehicle during use.

Maintenance Features:

  • Inspection: Inspect the jack for damage, wear, broken, or missing parts before each use. Ensure all components function properly.
  • Binding: If the product binds under a load, use equipment with equal or larger capacity to lower the load safely. After un-binding, clean, lubricate, and test the equipment.
  • Cleaning: If moving parts are obstructed, use cleaning solvent or degreaser. Remove rust with penetrating lubricant.
  • Lubrication: Proper lubrication is essential for safe operation. Use light penetrating oil or lubricating spray on all moving parts. Lubricate monthly for light duty, weekly for heavy/constant use. NEVER use sandpaper or abrasive material on these surfaces.
  • Rust Prevention: Daily check rams and pump plungers for rust/corrosion. Lift the equipment without a load to full extension and inspect lifting points. Clean as needed.
  • Grease Fittings: Some models have grease fittings that require regular greasing.
  • Adding Jack Oil:
    1. Position the jack on a level surface with the ram lowered.
    2. Remove the oil plug.
    3. Fill the oil case until the oil level is just beneath the lower rim of the oil fill hole.
    4. Replace the oil plug.
    5. Perform the Air Purge Procedure.
    • WARNING: DO NOT USE MOTOR OIL, HYDRAULIC BRAKE FLUID, ALCOHOL, GLYCERINE, DETERGENT, OR DIRTY OIL. ONLY use anti-foaming hydraulic jack oil of a good grade. Improper fluid can cause premature failure and sudden loss of load.
  • Replacing Jack Oil:
    1. Position the jack on a level surface with the ram lowered.
    2. Open the release valve (4 full turns counter-clockwise).
    3. Remove the oil fill plug.
    4. Turn the jack on its side to drain old oil from the fill hole.
    5. Position the jack on level ground with the ram lowered.
    6. Fill the oil case until the oil level is just beneath the lower rim, keeping dirt and other material clear.
    7. Replace the oil plug.
    8. Perform the Air Purge Procedure.
  • Storage: Lower the lifting arm, place the handle in the upright position, and store in a dry location (indoors recommended). If stored outdoors, lubricate all parts before and after use. Always store the jack in the fully retracted position in caustic environments to prevent corrosion.
  • Damaged Parts: Always check for damaged or worn parts before use. Replace or repair immediately.
  • Modifications: Do not modify the jack in any way, as this can impair function/safety and void the warranty.

Warranty Information:

The bottle jack is covered by a 1-year limited warranty when used as recommended. Only parts with a Part # are available for purchase. For assistance, contact the Parts and Warranty Department at 1-888-44-TORIN (1-888-448-6746) between 8:00 am and 5:00 pm Pacific Time, Monday-Friday. Keep a copy of the receipt, model number, serial number, and specific details for questions. The manufacturer reserves the right to make design changes and improvements without notice.
