RemovingtheSteeringColumn
1.Parkthemachineonalevelsurface,settheparkingbrake,lowerthecutting
deck(orimplement),shutofftheengine,andremovethekeyfromthekey
switch.
2.Carefullyremovethesteeringwheelcover(item1inFigure179)fromthe
steeringwheel.
3.Removethelocknut(item2inFigure179)andatwasherthatsecurethe
steeringwheeltothesteeringcolumn.
4.Removethesteeringwheelandfoamcollarfromthesteeringcolumn(item
29inFigure179).
5.Removetheknob(item12inFigure179)fromtheendoftheparkingbrake
rod.
6.Removethe6phillips-headscrews(item9inFigure179)thatsecurethe
towerpaneltothemachine,andremovethetowerpanel.
7.Removetheange-headscrew(item20inFigure179)andangenutthat
securethetiltbrackettothesteeringtower.Slidethetiltbracketoffthejam
nut.
8.Loosenandremovethejamnut(item28inFigure179).Removethetilt
steeringleverfromthesteeringtower.
9.Locateandretrievethefrictiondiscs(items23and25inFigure179)and
atwasher.
10.Loosenandremovethe4socket-headscrews(item21inFigure179)that
securethesteeringcontrolvalvetothesteeringcolumn.
11.Loosenandremovetheange-headscrews(items8and20inFigure179)
andangenutsthatattachthesteeringcolumntotheframe.
12.Slidethesteeringcolumnfromthesteeringcontrolvalve,andremovethe
steeringcolumnfromthemachine.
13.Locateandretrievethe2spacers(items16and19inFigure179).
14.Ifnecessary,removethe2bolts(item18inFigure179)and2angenuts
(item22inFigure179)thatsecurethepivotplatetothesteeringcolumn.
InstallingtheSteeringColumn
1.Ifremoved,securethepivotplate(item24inFigure179)tothesteering
columnwiththe2boltsand2angenuts.
2.Slidethesteeringcolumnontothesteeringcontrolvalve.Positionthe
spacers(items16and19inFigure179)tothesteeringcolumn.
3.Attachthesteeringcolumntotheframewiththeange-headscrews(items8
and20inFigure179)andangenuts.
4.Securethesteeringcolumntothesteeringcontrolvalvewiththe4
socket-headscrews(item21inFigure179).
5.Applyanti-seizelubricantontothethreadsandrodofthetiltsteeringlever
(item13inFigure179).Positionthefrictiondisc(item23inFigure179)
betweenthesteeringtowerandthepivotplate.Installthetiltleverthrough
thesteeringtowerboss,frictiondisc,andpivotplate.Placethefrictiondisc
(item25inFigure179)andatwasherontothelever,andthreadthejam
nutontothelever.
6.Torquethejamnutto27to31N·m(20to23ft-lb)sothattheleverhandleis
securedintheupposition(90°±10°fromhorizontal).
7.Positionthetiltbracket(item26inFigure179)ontothejamnutandsecure
thebrackettothesteeringtowerwiththeange-headscrewandangenut.
