Thismachinehasthecharacteristicsofbothagarden
tractorandazero-turnmachine.Likeagarden
tractor,themachinehasafootpedalthatcontrolsthe
forwardandreversemotionalongwiththespeed,
andithasasteeringwheelthatcontrolsthedirection
andtheturningradius.Likeazero-turnmachine,
thereardrivewheelsoperateindependentlyofeach
other,enablingyoutomakesharpturnsandtoturn
indifferentdirectionsquickly.Thesecharacteristics
vastlyimprovethemaneuverabilityofthemachine,
buttheymayalsorequireyoutopracticedrivingifyou
areunfamiliarwiththistypeofmachine.
WARNING
Themachinecanspinveryrapidly.You
maylosecontrolofthemachineandcause
personalinjuryordamagetothemachine.
•Usecautionwhenmakingturns.
•Slowthemachinedownbeforemaking
sharpturns.
Thethrottlecontrolregulatestheenginespeedas
measuredinrpm(revolutionsperminute).Placing
thethrottlecontrolintheFASTpositioncanbebestfor
performance.Formostapplications,operatinginthe
FULL-THROTTLEpositionisdesirable.
DrivingForwardorBackward
1.MovethethrottletotheFASTposition.
2.Releasetheparkingbrake.
3.Placeyourfootontothetraction-controlpedal
andslowlypressthetopofthepedaltogo
forward,orpressonthebottomofthepedalto
movebackward(Figure27).
Note:Thefartheryoumovethepedalineither
direction,thefasterthemachinemovesinthat
direction.

MowinginReverse
Themachinehasaninterlockfeaturethatprevents
themowerdeckfrommowingwhilethemachineis
travelinginreverse.Ifyoushiftintoreversewiththe
PTOengaged,thePTOstops.Ifyouneedtomow
whileinreversegear,youcantemporarilydeactivate
thisinterlock.
Note:Donotmowwhilebackingupunlessitis
necessary.

Achildorbystandercouldbebackedover
byaridingmowerwithbladesengagedand
causeseriouspersonalinjuryordeath.
•Donotmowinreverseunlessabsolutely
necessary.
•Alwayslookbackwardanddownbefore
backingup.
•UsetheKeyChoiceswitchonlyifyouare
certainnochildrenorotherbystanderswill
appearinthemowingarea.
•Alwaysremoveboththeignitionand
KeyChoicekeysandputtheminasafe
placeoutofthereachofchildrenor
unauthorizeduserswhenleavingthe
machineunattended.
Ifyouarecertainthatyoucansafelymoworoperate
anattachmentinreverse,completethefollowing
procedure:
1.InserttheKeyChoicekeyintotheKeyChoice
switch(Figure7).
2.EngagethePTO.
3.TurntheKeyChoicekeyclockwiseuntilitstops
andreleaseit.
Note:Aredlightilluminatingontheconsole
indicatesthattheinterlockhasbeendeactivated.
4.Performthemowing.
5.Whennishedmowing,removetheKeyChoice
key(Figure7).
Note:Onceyoudeactivatetheinterlock,it
staysinthismode—withyourmowerbladeor
PTOpoweredattachmentoperatingwhenever
youbackup—andtheconsolelightstayson
untilyoueitherdisengagethePTOorshutoff
theengine.
