Overview

This document describes the installation and maintenance of the Toro Flashing Beacon Kit, designed for CT or LT Series Turf Mowers (Model No. 02901, Serial No. 316000001 and Up).

The Flashing Beacon Kit provides a visual warning signal for turf mowers, enhancing safety during operation, particularly in areas where visibility is crucial. The beacon is a light-emitting device that can be turned on or off via a switch installed on the machine's control panel.

Technical Specifications:

  • Model Number: 02901
  • Serial Number Range: 316000001 and Up
  • Compatible Mowers: CT or LT Series Turf Mowers
  • Fuse Requirement: 10 A fuse (located in the main fuse box, third position from the right). It is critical to use a fuse of the same type and amperage to prevent damage to the electrical system.

Usage Features:

  • Activation: To turn on the beacon, the operator presses the bottom of the newly installed switch on the control panel.
  • Deactivation: To turn off the beacon, the operator presses the top of the switch.
  • Ignition Requirement: The machine's ignition switch must be in position 1 for the beacon to function. This ensures the beacon is only operational when the machine is ready for use.

Installation Process:

The installation of the Flashing Beacon Kit involves several steps, emphasizing safety and proper electrical connections:

  1. Machine Preparation:

    • Park the machine on a level surface.
    • Engage the parking brake.
    • Shut off the engine and remove the key.
    • Open the engine cover to access the battery and wiring.
    • Battery Disconnection (Critical Safety Step):
      • Disconnect the negative (black) ground cable from the negative (-) battery post first.
      • Then, disconnect the positive (red) cable from the positive (+) battery post.
      • Warning: Battery posts, terminals, and related accessories contain lead and lead compounds, known to cause cancer and reproductive harm. Hands must be washed after handling.
      • Warning: Incorrect battery cable routing can cause sparks, leading to battery gas explosions and personal injury. Ensure battery terminals or metal tools do not short against metal machine components.
    • Remove the bulkhead by unscrewing 4 screws to access the main wiring loom.
  2. Beacon Mounting:

    • Verify that the ROPS (Roll-Over Protective Structure) pivot bolts and clamp bolts are securely in place and tight.
    • Remove and discard the existing nut and bolt from the ROPS on the right side of the machine, retaining the washers.
    • Align the hole in the beacon bracket with the hole in the ROPS.
    • Install the new bolt with an existing washer.
    • Install a new nut and an existing washer, tightening them to a torque of 15 N·m (11 ft-lb). Avoid overtightening, as this can make the ROPS difficult to fold.
    • Install the beacon stand to the beacon bracket. Rotate the cable as the connector is screwed in to prevent twisting.
    • Loosen the wing nut and remove the beacon from the stand temporarily.
    • Plug the beacon onto the top of the beacon stand.
    • Tighten the wing nut on the clamp to secure the beacon.
  3. Wiring and Switch Installation:

    • Route the cable down the front of the ROPS frame, ensuring it is not trapped or chafed.
    • Connect the cable to the mating connector on the main wiring loom, located near the horn, specifically to the orange and black wires.
    • Insert a cable tie through each of the two holes in the beacon bracket and secure the cable.
    • On the main control panel, at the rear of the control pad, remove and discard the blanking plug.
    • Pull out the switch connector (containing orange-red/orange and black wires) and plug it into the new switch.
    • Press the switch into the cutout until it clicks into place.
  4. Completing the Installation:

    • Install the bulkhead.
    • Apply the serial label adjacent to the machine's existing serial label.
    • Battery Connection (Critical Safety Step): Install the positive (red) battery cable to the positive (+) battery terminal.
    • Install the negative (black) ground cable to the negative (-) battery terminal.
    • Lower and latch the engine cover.

Maintenance Features:

  • Fuse Replacement:
    • The beacon fuse is a 10 A fuse located in the main fuse box of the machine, specifically in the third position from the right.
    • To replace the fuse, simply pull out the old fuse from the fuse block and install a new one.
    • Important: Always use a fuse of the same type and amperage as the one being replaced to prevent damage to the electrical system.

General Warnings and Safety:

  • Always follow proper battery disconnection and connection procedures to prevent sparks and potential battery gas explosions.
  • Ensure all cables are routed correctly and secured to prevent damage from trapping or chafing.
  • Use appropriate torque specifications when tightening fasteners to ensure secure mounting without over-stressing components.
  • Adhere to all California Proposition 65 warnings regarding lead and lead compounds in battery components.

This kit is designed to be integrated seamlessly into the existing electrical and structural components of the specified Toro turf mowers, providing an essential safety feature for operators.
