1.Checkandcleancorrosionfromthebatteryterminals
beforejumpstartingthemachine.Ensurethatthe
connectionsaretight.
CAUTION
Corrosionorlooseconnectionscancause
unwantedelectricalvoltagespikesatanytime
duringthejumpstartingprocedure.
Donotattempttojumpstartwithlooseor
corrodedbatteryterminalsordamagetothe
engineorEFImayoccur.
DANGER
Jumpstartingaweakbatterythatiscracked,
frozen,haslowelectrolytelevel,oran
open/shortedbatterycell,cancausean
explosionresultinginseriouspersonalinjury.
Donotjumpstartaweakbatteryifthese
conditionsexist.
2.Makesurethattheboosterbatteryisagoodandfully
chargedlead-acidbatteryat12.6voltsorgreater.Use
propersizedjumpercableswithshortlengthstoreduce
voltagedropbetweensystems.
3.Makesurethatthecablesarecolorcodedorlabeledfor
thecorrectpolarity.
CAUTION
Connectingthejumpercablesincorrectly
(wrongpolarity)canimmediatelydamagethe
EFIsystem.
Becertainofbatteryterminalpolarityand
jumpercablepolaritywhenhookingup
batteries.
WARNING
Batteriescontainacidandproduceexplosive
gases.
•Shieldyoueyesandfacefromthebatteries
atalltimes.
•Donotleanoverthebatteries.
Note:Besurethattheventcapsaretightandlevel.
Placeadampcloth,ifavailable,overanyventcapson
bothbatteries.Besurethatthevehiclesdonottouch
andthatbothoftheelectricalsystemsareoffandatthe
sameratedsystemvoltage.Theseinstructionsarefor
negativegroundsystemsonly.
4.Connectthepositive(+)cabletothepositive(+)
terminalofthedischargedbatterythatiswiredtothe
starterorsolenoidasshowninFigure54.
