Questions and Answers

Overview

This document is the Owner's Manual for Toshiba Air Conditioners (Multi Type), specifically for Fresh Air Intake Indoor Units. It covers models MMD-UP0481HFP-E, MMD-UP0721HFP-E, MMD-UP0961HFP-E, MMD-UP1121HFP-E, and MMD-UP1281HFP-E. The air conditioner uses R410A refrigerant and is intended for commercial use.

Function Description

The Toshiba Fresh Air Intake Indoor Unit is designed to condition fresh air and introduce it into a room. It can operate in three primary modes: COOL, HEAT, and FAN. In COOL mode, it cools the fresh air before sending it into the room. In HEAT mode, it heats the fresh air. In FAN mode, it simply circulates fresh air without temperature modification. The unit controls the supply air temperature to be close to the set temperature of the remote controller, though actual supply air temperature may vary based on outdoor/suction air conditions and the operation of other indoor units in a multi-line system. It is important to note that this fresh air intake unit cannot control the room temperature directly; a separate indoor unit for air conditioning is required for room temperature control.

Usage Features

The air conditioner is operated via a remote controller with an LCD backlight that illuminates for 15 seconds during operation. The remote controller features:

  • ON/OFF button: Turns the unit on or off.
  • Setting button: Adjusts the setting temperature (in 1.0°C steps) and changes settings in Operation mode, Fan speed mode, or Wind direction mode.
  • OFF timer button: Sets the OFF timer, allowing the unit to stop after a set period (0.5h to 24h).
  • Menu button: Selects Operation mode, Fan speed mode, or Wind direction mode.

The remote controller display includes several indicators:

  • Operation mode indicator: Shows the selected operation mode (Heat, Cool, Fan).
  • Central control indicator: Displays when the unit is centrally controlled, with some remote controller functions potentially restricted.
  • Setting indicator: Indicates when the model is being checked automatically.
  • Service indicator: Appears during protective device activation or a check.
  • Test run indicator: Displayed during test run.
  • Temperature setting indicator: Shows the selected set temperature.
  • Fan speed indicator: Indicates the selected fan speed (Auto, Low, Low+, Med, Med+, High, Fix).
  • OFF timer indicator: Shows the remaining time for the OFF timer.
  • Pre-heat indicator: Displayed during heating mode pre-heating or defrost cycle.
  • Operation standby indicator: Indicates when simultaneous cooling/heating is not possible in a multi-system or when outdoor temperature is outside the operating range.
  • Notice display: Appears when a notice code occurs.

Operation Conditions and Protections:

  • COOL mode: If outdoor/suction air temperature is under setup temp. +3°C or under 19°C, FAN status is automatically engaged.
  • HEAT mode: If outdoor/suction air temperature is over setup temp. -3°C or over 15°C, FAN status is automatically engaged.
  • Protection in COOL/FAN mode: Operation automatically stops if outdoor/suction air temperature is under 5°C to protect equipment. Users should switch to HEAT mode in this case.
  • Protection in HEAT mode: Operation automatically stops if outdoor/suction air temperature is under -10°C (*1) to protect equipment. For SMMS-u outdoor units, the operating temperature is -10°C or more; for other outdoor units, it is -5°C or more. If operating below -10°C, a duct heater (locally procured) is recommended.
  • Defrosting: During heating, the unit automatically performs defrosting (2-10 minutes) to improve heating efficiency, stopping the indoor fan during this period.
  • 3-minute protection: The outdoor unit will not operate for approximately 3 minutes after restart or power-on to protect the system.
  • Power failure: All operations stop. To resume, the ON/OFF button must be pushed.
  • Protective device (High pressure switch): Automatically stops the unit and blinks the operation lamp if excessive load is applied. This can occur if the outdoor unit's air intake/discharge is blocked or if strong wind blows continuously against the outdoor unit. During heating, it can also activate if the indoor unit's air filter is excessively dirty or the indoor unit's air discharge is blocked. After activation, the power switch should be turned off, the cause removed, and then restarted.
  • Simultaneous Cooling/Heating: Indoor units connected to the same outdoor unit cannot perform cooling and heating simultaneously. If attempted, cooling units will stop, and a running preparation indicator will display. Heating units will continue to run.
  • Troubleshooting History: The unit records up to 4 incidents. This history can be accessed by pushing the OFF timer button for over 10 seconds. The OFF timer indicator will alternately show the check code and the indoor unit number. The setting button can be used to scroll through the history. Pushing the Menu button for over 10 seconds in this mode will delete the entire history.

Maintenance Features

Daily maintenance, including air filter cleaning, should be performed by a qualified service person, especially for models requiring high-place work.

  • Air Filters: Clogged filters can reduce cooling and heating performance.
    • Long life prefilter: Dust can be removed with a vacuum cleaner or by rinsing with water. For heavy dirt, a soft brush and neutral detergent can be used. After washing, it should be drained and dried in the shade. Do not wash with water over 50°C, expose to fire, or use harsh chemicals.
    • High-efficiency filter: This filter cannot be washed and reused. It should be replaced when due (approximately 2500 hours of operation is recommended), or sooner depending on intake air conditions.
  • Indoor unit and remote controller: Wipe with a dry, soft cloth. Avoid benzine, thinner, scouring powder, or chemical cloths as they may cause deformation or breakage.
  • If unused for over a month: Run the fan for half a day to dry the inside, then turn off the main power switch and clean the air filter.
  • Periodic inspection: After long periods of use, parts may deteriorate, or drainage may worsen. An inspection by the dealer is recommended.
  • Drain pan: A qualified service person should clean the drain pan. Without cleaning, the drain pan may fill with waste, leading to water overflow onto the ceiling or floor.
