Refrigeration System Components:

  • Compressor: High efficiency scroll compressor with internal vibration isolator and overload protection. External vibration isolation via rubber mounts.
  • Water-to-Refrigerant Heat Exchanger: High quality stainless steel braze plate heat exchanger, 450 psig working pressure rating.
  • Freezestat: 35°F for open loop/non-antifreeze closed loop, 20°F for closed loop with antifreeze.
  • Lockout Relay: Triggers shutdown of compressor, loop pumps, and desuperheater pump if safety devices (low pressure, high pressure, freezestat) are tripped.
  • Reversing Valve: Pilot operated sliding piston type with replaceable encapsulated magnetic coil. Energized in cooling, de-energized in heating.
  • Refrigerant Tubing: Copper, low temperature lines insulated with 3/8-inch thick elastomeric insulation (UL 94V-5 rated, flame spread rating < 25, smoke density rating < 50).
  • Refrigerant Metering: Bi-directional thermal expansion valve for operation with entering water temperatures from 25°F to 120°F.
  • Liquid Line Filter: Bi-directional liquid line filter drier.
  • Servicing Pressure Ports: High and low pressure Schrader ports located outside the unit case.

Usage Features

Installation:

  • Location: Must be placed on a level surface in an indoor protected area, with 2-3 feet clearance for service access. Not for exterior installation.
  • Water Connections: Uses 1-inch brass swivel connectors for loop water, eliminating need for backup wrench. Gaskets are provided. Desuperheater connections are 1/2-inch NPT.
  • Refrigeration Connections: Copper stub-outs, requiring soldering. Adapters may be needed for air handler connection. All refrigeration and water piping should be insulated.
  • Electrical: Power wiring per local codes. Control wiring is 24V. Prewired terminal strip for easy connection. Desuperheater fuse is shipped loose in the electrical compartment.
  • Thermostats: Compatible with single-stage manual changeover (Heat-Off-Cool, On-Off fan) or single-stage cool/two-stage heat manual changeover (Heat-Off-Cool, Auto/On fan, Normal-Auxiliary-Emergency Heat) thermostats, depending on whether electric backup heater is used.

Desuperheater (Optional):

  • Preheats domestic hot water using heat from the compressor discharge line.
  • Operates when discharge line reaches 145°F. Shuts off if incoming water exceeds 125°F to prevent overheating and pump damage.
  • Water cooled pump, requires connection to water heater before running.

Ground Water Applications (Open Loop):

  • Requires an ample supply of suitable quality water.
  • A 60 mesh straining device (sand filter/separator) is mandatory for incoming water line.
  • Discharge water must be returned to the aquifer via a recharge well.

Ground Water Applications (Closed Loop):

  • Loop sizing must be done by a qualified installer.
  • Requires at least 15% by volume antifreeze solution (propylene glycol or methanol) if ground water temperature is 66°F or less.
  • Only full strength inhibited propylene glycol or methanol should be used.

Refrigerant Charging:

  • Charge system to achieve 10 degrees superheat.
  • Sub-cooling should be approximately 8 to 5 degrees F.
  • Allow 20 minutes for conditions to stabilize before measuring superheat.
  • Return water flow to 3 gpm per nominal ton of capacity.
  • For non-TWE air handlers, place GSSD in cooling mode and throttle water flow until leaving fluid temperature is 95°F.

Maintenance Features

Access:

  • The top, front half of the diagonal cabinet is removable by removing two screws for access to internal components.

Safety Devices:

  • High and low pressure cutouts protect the compressor.
  • Freezestat protects the water heat exchanger from freezing.
  • All safety devices (except compressor internal overload) are connected to a lockout relay.

Troubleshooting:

  • Lockout Relay Reset: Can be reset by cycling power at the disconnect or thermostat system switch. If manually reset before a 5-minute period, the unit will not run.
  • Important Notice (Pressure Switch): The low pressure switch must be wired to activate at 35 psig for a 35°F freezestat, or 7 psig for a 20°F freezestat. Incorrect wiring can lead to unit failure and voided warranty.

Warranty:

  • Unit Warranty: One year for material and factory workmanship (labor and parts).
  • Refrigerant Circuit Warranty: Additional four years for compressor, expansion device, reversing valve (less solenoid coil), and heat exchangers (parts only).
  • Voided Warranty: Bypassing or removing any safety device voids the warranty.

Accessories (Purchased Separately):

  • Water Regulating Valve Assembly: Direct and reverse acting valves for low flow, or low/high fluid temperature conditions. Beneficial for open loop systems.
  • Motorized Water Valve: Installed on the return line of the system between the loop and pump module. Opens when compressor runs, slowly closes when compressor shuts down to prevent water hammer.
  • Electric Strip Heaters: ETL listed, install directly inside TWE air handler. Provide supplemental and emergency heat.
  • Pump Module: Self-contained pumping package for earth-coupled heat pump systems. Includes insulated Grundfos pumps, cabinet, optional cast iron/bronze pumps, 3-way brass valves. Available in one or two pump modules.
  • Hose Kits: Includes brass 1-inch male pipe thread (MPT) by barb-fittings, brass 90 degree 1-inch MPT by barb-elbows with pressure/temperature ports, and 10 feet of rubber hose with 4 hose clamps.
  • Sand Filter/Separator: Helps ensure clean water for the water-to-refrigerant heat exchanger. Recommended strainer is 60 mesh or greater.
