Overview

The Trane RTAA/RTAB Air-Cooled Helical Rotary Liquid Chillers are robust units designed for outdoor installation, offering reliable liquid chilling capabilities. These chillers are available in configurations with one, two, three, or four helical-rotary type compressors, making them suitable for a range of cooling demands. Each compressor circuit is a self-contained hermetic package, meticulously factory-piped, wired, leak-tested, dehydrated, and charged with the appropriate amount of refrigerant and oil before shipment. This ensures that the units arrive at the jobsite ready for installation with minimal on-site assembly required for the core refrigeration system.

Upon delivery, it is crucial to conduct a thorough inspection of the unit. The manual emphasizes checking for any visible damage to exterior components and packaging before signing the delivery note. Any damage or material shortages should be explicitly noted on the delivery receipt, and a registered letter of protest should be sent to the carrier within 72 hours. Additionally, the local Trane sales office must be notified immediately. A more comprehensive inspection for concealed damage should be performed within 7 days of delivery, and if found, the shipment should not be unpacked further, and photos of the damage should be taken. This meticulous reception procedure is vital to protect against loss due to transit damage and to ensure that the warranty remains valid.

The RTAA/RTAB units are factory run-tested under actual design conditions, which provides an assurance of their proper control operation and performance before they even reach the installation site. Chilled water inlet and outlet openings are covered for shipment to protect them from contamination and damage during transit. The inclusion of separate compressor motor starters for each circuit enhances operational flexibility and simplifies troubleshooting.

For installation, the manual provides detailed instructions, which must be followed carefully. It highlights the importance of proper clearances around the unit to ensure adequate airflow for the condenser coils and accessibility for maintenance. Lifting procedures are also outlined to prevent damage to the unit and ensure the safety of personnel. Specific guidance on water piping connections is provided, emphasizing the need for correct sizing and installation to optimize performance and prevent issues. Freeze protection measures are also detailed, which are critical for units operating in colder climates to prevent damage to the evaporator and associated piping.

The operation of these chillers is managed by a Unit Control Module with Clear Language Display (UCM-CLD), for which a separate manual (L80 IM 025 E) must be used jointly with this document. This control system allows for precise monitoring and adjustment of operating parameters, ensuring efficient and stable cooling. The manual covers operating principles, the refrigeration cycle, and the oil system, providing a foundational understanding for operators. Instructions for remote CLD panel wiring are included, offering flexibility in control placement. Pre-start, start-up, and shut-down procedures are clearly defined to guide operators through the proper sequence of bringing the chiller online and taking it offline, minimizing the risk of operational errors.

Maintenance is a key aspect of ensuring the longevity and optimal performance of the RTAA/RTAB chillers. The manual strongly recommends signing a maintenance contract with a local Trane Service Agency. Regular maintenance by qualified specialists is crucial for detecting and correcting malfunctions in a timely manner, preventing serious damage, and maximizing the equipment's operating life. Failure to adhere to maintenance instructions can lead to the cancellation of the warranty. The manual includes a chemical cleaning configuration, which is important for maintaining the efficiency of the heat exchangers. A start-up log sheet for compressors A, B, C, and D is provided to record initial operating data, which can be invaluable for future troubleshooting and performance analysis.

Safety recommendations are paramount during maintenance and service visits. The manual explicitly states that the main supply must be disconnected before any servicing. Service work on the refrigeration and electrical systems should only be performed by qualified and experienced personnel. It also specifies the maximum allowable pressures for system leak testing on both low and high-pressure sides, emphasizing the necessity of using a pressure regulator.

Trane offers training programs through its refrigeration and air conditioning service school. These programs are designed to provide operators and maintenance technicians with a deeper understanding of the equipment, focusing on periodic checks of operating parameters and preventive maintenance. This training aims to reduce the overall cost of ownership by preventing serious and costly breakdowns. The manufacturer reserves the right to alter product details at any time due to continuous product improvement, and any discrepancies between the manual and specific country/order specifications should be clarified with the nearest Trane office.
