Operator should know boating safety, safe navigation,
and boat operating procedures.
Make sure that the lower unit of the engine
is in the water.
Be sure the emergency
engine shutoff switch
(See page 24) is in the
“RUN” position.
Attach safety lanyard
to vessel operator.
Be sure gear shift and
throttle control levers
are in the NEUTRAL
position.
Start Engine
Turn ignition key to
“Start” position and
hold until engine
starts.
When engine starts,
release key. The
key will return to the
“ON” position.
The “THROTTLE ONLY” button on the gear shift/
throttle control allows the operator to increase engine
RPM for warm-up without shifting the engines into
gear.
Be sure that the gear
shift / throttle control
handle is in the NEUTRAL
position.
Press and hold the
“THROTTLE ONLY“
button while moving the control handle
ahead to the forward position.
Advance the control handle to increase
engine RPM.
NOTE: Engine RPM is limited to prevent engine
damage.
To disengage, return the control handle back
to the neutral position.
The warm-up mode can be re-activated by turning
the engine off and re-starting.

Starting The Engine
NEVER start nor operate your engine (even
momentarily) without water circulating
through all the cooling water intake holes in
the gearcase to prevent damage to the water
pump (running dry) or overheating of the
engine.
