Appendix
A Migration
u-blox is committed to ensure that products in the same form factor are backwards compatible
over several technology generations. This section describes important differences to consider when
migrating from u-blox M8 to u-blox M10.
A.1 Hardware changes
SAM-M10Q is pin-to-pin compatible with the SAM-M8Q module. Table 20 lists the key hardware-
related changes.
Feature Change Action needed / Remarks
VCC, V_IO
New power supply ramp requirements.
The V_IO supply voltage must not be
higher than VCC + 0.3 V.
The absolute maximum rating for the
minimum voltage at V_IO and VCC is
-0.3 V.
There is no change in the nominal supply voltage range 2.7 V -
3.6 V. Refer to the minimum and maximum VCC and V_IO ramp
requirements in the SAM-M10Q data sheet [1].
V_BCKP supply
range
SAM-M10Q: 1.65 V - 3.6 V
SAM-M8Q: 1.4 V - 3.6 V
Hardware change is required when migrating from a design with
less than 1.65 V V_BCKP supply.
Backup current
The hardware backup and software
standby current in SAM-M10Q is higher
than in SAM-M8Q module.
Check the backup battery capacity for suitability for the target
design requirements.
SAW-LNA
RF front-end
Internal component changes.
Improved out-of-band immunity.
SAFEBOOT_N,
TIMEPULSE
The SAFEBOOT_N pin is internally
connected to TIMEPULSE pin through
a 1 kΩ series resistor.
Do not drive the TIMEPULSE pin low at startup because it will
put the receiver in safeboot mode.
RESET_N Resetting the receiver clears the BBR
content.
SAM-M10Q: time information, GNSS
orbit data and receiver configuration
stored in BBR cleared
SAM-M8Q: time information cleared
TTFF after resetting SAM-M10Q with the RESET_N pin is
similar to performing a cold start.
Digital IO
Digital IO pins must not be driven if VCC
and V_IO are not supplied.
The electrical specification for digital
IO pins has changed. The voltage levels
are defined at 1 mA current (exception:
TIMEPULSE pin 2 mA).
Do not drive IO pins when VCC and V_IO are not supplied.
Otherwise permanent damage may result. If driving the IO pins
cannot be avoided, buffers are required to isolate the pins.
Additional external pull-up resistors may be required to increase
the drive strength of the digital IO output pin or adjust the load
accordingly.
Table 20: SAM-M10Q hardware features
Refer to the SAM-M10Q data sheet [1] for product specification.
A.2 Software changes
Table 21 presents a summary of the key software-related changes between u-blox M10 and u-blox
M8.
