Overview

This document is an installation manual for the Unico V2430/3036/3642 Vertical Air Handler Unit (V-AHU), which is a single-packaged indoor comfort system. It includes both cooling and heating coils within the same cabinet and is designed for vertical up-flow configuration. The unit is available in three sizes: 2430, 3036, and 3642, with nominal maximum capacities of 24,000, 30,000, and 36,000 Btu per hour, respectively. The system uses small-diameter ducts (two-inch diameter) to deliver conditioned air, which then entrains and mixes with room air, providing even temperature distribution through aspiration.

Function Description

The Unico V-AHU provides indoor comfort through heating and cooling. It can be configured as heating-only (blower/motor and hot water coil), cooling-only (blower/motor and cooling coil), or a combined heating and cooling system (both coils, with the cooling coil being a heat pump coil, B-Style or E-Style). The unit features an EC motor and SCB control as standard, offering variable-speed operation. It is designed to operate with a low-velocity return air system, ensuring quiet operation. The system includes a pleated filter for air filtration, which can be easily removed and replaced.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Model Series: V (Single piece vertical unit, fan coil)
  • Cabinet Sizes (Nominal Minimum Capacity):
    • 24: 24,000 Btu/hr (7.0 kW)
    • 30: 30,000 Btu/hr (8.8 kW)
    • 36: 36,000 Btu/hr (10.5 kW) (only EC1 and EC2)
  • Power Supply, Motor Type:
    • EC1: 1, 50/60, 120 variable-speed
    • EC2: 1, 50/60, 208/230 variable speed
  • Refrigerant Type: R410A (for cooling and heat pump coils)
  • Electrical Requirements: 1ph, 60/50 Hz power supply with a 15 amp fuse or breaker. The low voltage transformer is factory wired for 230V, with an option to switch to 208V.
  • Refrigerant Line Sizes (Flare Connections):
    • 2430: 1/4" Liquid, 1/2" Vapor
    • 3036: 3/8" Liquid, 5/8" Vapor
    • 3642: 3/8" Liquid, 3/4" Vapor
  • Condensate Drain: 3/4 inch (19 mm) female pipe thread fitting.
  • Filter Size (1 inch / 25 mm thick pleated filter):
    • 2430: 18 x 18 inches (457 x 457 mm)
    • 3036: 18 x 22 inches (457 x 559 mm)
    • 3642: 21 x 22 inches (533 x 584 mm)
  • Maximum Return Static Pressure: 0.15 inches of water column (37 Pa), including the filter.
  • Sound Attenuation: Closed-cell insulation for improved sound attenuation; no exposed insulation.

Usage Features

  • Installation Flexibility: The fully insulated cabinet allows for zero clearance to the top, bottom, or sides, making it suitable for installation in closets, basements, or utility rooms. A minimum of 26 inches (660 mm) clearance is required in the front for servicing.
  • Vertical Up-Flow Configuration: Designed for vertical airflow applications, with air entering from the bottom.
  • Variable Speed EC Motor: Provides precise airflow control and energy efficiency.
  • Anti-Frost Switch: Offers protection against coil frosting in refrigerant systems, although it's recommended to avoid low return air temperatures (below 65°F), low airflow (below 200 CFM/nominal ton), and low outdoor temperatures (below 65°F) to prevent frosting.
  • Optional Low Ambient Control Kit: Can be installed on the condensing unit to improve cooling capacity and control in colder outdoor ambient temperatures (below 70°F / 21.1°C).
  • Hot Water Coil Protection: When using hot water coils, it's crucial to ensure the air temperature leaving the refrigerant coil is always above 32°F. An averaging air temperature thermostat can be installed on the front of the hot water coil to automatically shut down the system if the air entering the hot water coil falls below 35°F.
  • Condensate U-Trap: A clear U-Trap is provided, designed for higher static pressures (2.5 inches / 64mm deep) and featuring easy-to-remove clean-out caps and tees for various piping arrangements.
  • Refrigerant Charging: The manual provides detailed procedures for charging cooling and heat pump systems, emphasizing the importance of sub-cooling and superheat measurements for proper operation. It explicitly states not to vent refrigerant to the atmosphere.
  • Airflow Checking: Instructions are provided for measuring plenum static pressure and using a Turbo-Meter to measure CFM from each outlet to verify proper airflow and detect duct system leakage.

Maintenance Features

  • Accessible Components: All components are accessible from the front of the unit for easy servicing of the blower/motor assembly and coils.
  • Filter Replacement: The unit includes a 1-inch (25 mm) thick pleated filter that can be easily removed and replaced. The system can also accommodate a 2-inch filter or an external filter.
  • Condensate Line Maintenance: The clear U-Trap allows for visual inspection for clogs, and its design facilitates easy cleaning.
  • Refrigerant System Troubleshooting: The manual provides guidelines for checking refrigerant charge, including sub-cooling and superheat measurements, to diagnose and address issues with the expansion valve or overall system performance.
  • Water Coil Maintenance: For hot water systems, instructions are given for filling and bleeding air from the system, and the use of glycol-water antifreeze solution is recommended in unconditioned spaces to prevent freezing.
  • Electrical Safety: Clear warnings are provided to disconnect electrical supply before wiring to prevent injury or death.

The Unico System is certified to UL Standard 1995 and conforms to CAN/CSA Standard C22.2 NO. 236, and Unico products comply with European regulations for product safety, as indicated by the ETL and CE marks.
