Overview

This document is a Homeowner's Manual for Valor Gas Fireplaces, specifically models L1 (1500KN, 1700KN natural gas; 1500KP, 1700KP propane gas) and L2. It provides essential information for safe operation, maintenance, and troubleshooting of the appliance.

Function Description:

The Valor gas fireplace is designed as a supplemental heater for residential use. It provides radiant heat and aesthetic appeal through a visible flame. The appliance can be controlled via a Thermostatic Remote Control or a Wall Switch, offering flexibility in operation. The remote control allows for turning the fire ON and OFF, controlling flame height, and programming automatic functions based on temperature or time. The wall switch provides basic ON/OFF control and flame height adjustment. A key safety feature is the flame supervision device, which automatically shuts off the gas supply if the pilot flame extinguishes. The fireplace is designed for use with specific types of gas (natural gas or propane gas) as indicated on the rating plate and is not convertible for other gases unless a certified kit is used.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Models: L1 (1500KN, 1700KN natural gas; 1500KP, 1700KP propane gas) and L2.
  • Gas Type: Natural gas or propane gas, as specified on the rating plate.
  • Heat Output: Not explicitly stated for all models, but an example rating plate shows "Max 24,000 Btu/hr" and "Min 6,500 Btu/hr" for a 739MN model.
  • Glass Temperature: Can exceed 500°F (260°C) at full capacity.
  • Wall Surfaces Temperature: Can reach in excess of 200°F (93°C) above the fireplace.
  • Shelf Surfaces Temperature: Can reach in excess of 200°F (93°C) in front of the fireplace.
  • Clearance to Combustibles: A minimum of 36 inches (0.9 m) in front of the fireplace is required for furniture or other objects. Combustible objects sensitive to heat or furniture should be kept within 36 inches (0.9 m) around the fireplace.
  • Vent System: Must be used with a vent system as described in the installation manual; no other vent system or components may be used.
  • Batteries: The fireplace system uses four AA 1.5V alkaline batteries in a separate battery holder (located next to the wall switch) and two AAA 1.5V alkaline batteries in the remote control handset. Batteries should last one to two seasons.

Usage Features:

  • Ignition: The fireplace can be turned ON by pressing and holding the ON button on the remote or the ON-OFF button on the wall switch until a short beep confirms the start sequence. The pilot lights up, followed by the main fireplace burners.
  • Flame Height Adjustment: Flame height can be increased or decreased using the corresponding buttons on the remote control or wall switch.
  • Thermostatic Mode (Remote Control): Automatically adjusts flame height to maintain a set room temperature.
  • Program Mode (Remote Control): Allows users to set specific ON/OFF times and temperatures for the fireplace.
  • Eco Mode (Remote Control): Modulates flame height between high and low every 20 minutes to maintain a comfortable temperature efficiently.
  • Child Proofing (Remote Control): A feature to lock out all commands from the handset, except the OFF function, to prevent accidental operation by children.
  • Countdown Timer (Remote Control): Allows setting a timer for the fireplace to automatically turn off (maximum 9 hours and 50 minutes).
  • Automatic Shut-off Features:
    • Seven Day Shut Off: The system shuts off completely if there is no change in flame height for 7 days.
    • 3 Hour No Communication Function: The valve turns to pilot flame if there is no communication between the handset and receiver for a 3-hour period.
    • Low Battery Receiver: The system shuts off the fire completely if the battery holder batteries are critically low.
  • First-Time Operation: Expect some vapors and a slight odor due to curing compounds, which will dissipate after a few hours of use. Flames may initially be at full height or slightly higher.
  • Gas Shut-off: The fireplace is equipped with a flame supervision device that shuts off the gas supply if the pilot flame goes out. Manual pilot lighting instructions are available on the Fireplace and Lighting Information card.
  • Info Card: Important fireplace and lighting information is located on a card under the firebox, behind the front panel.

Maintenance Features:

  • Annual Inspection: Recommended to be performed by a qualified service technician at least once per year. This includes inspecting the pressure relief mechanism, cleaning the glass window, checking the flame safety system, verifying main burner ignition, inspecting primary air openings, checking vent terminal for obstructions, vacuuming the firebox, testing flame failure response time, and checking gas-carrying components for leaks.
  • Glass Cleaning: The ceramic glass windows can accumulate mineral deposits. Regular cleaning with an emulsion-type cleaner and a soft damp cloth is recommended to prevent etching. Abrasive or ammonia-based cleaners should not be used. The glass must be cool before cleaning.
  • Other Parts Cleaning: Steel trims can be cleaned with mild soap and warm water. Barrier screens, firebox ceramic logs/rocks, and walls can be dusted with a soft brush.
  • Window Removal/Refitting: Detailed instructions are provided for removing the window for cleaning and refitting it, emphasizing safety precautions to ensure correct installation and sealing to prevent carbon monoxide leaks and damage.
  • Battery Replacement: Instructions are provided for replacing the AA batteries in the wall switch battery holder and the AAA batteries in the remote control handset. It is crucial to turn off the fireplace (including pilot) and allow it to cool before accessing batteries.
  • Log Position: If logs are moved during cleaning, refer to the Installation Manual for specific instructions on how to reposition them for optimal operation and combustion efficiency.
  • Vent Inspection: Regularly inspect the external vent cap for obstructions like snow, trees, bushes, or leaves.

Safety Warnings:

  • Extremely Hot Surfaces: The glass window and other parts become extremely hot during operation and remain hot after being turned off. A barrier screen is provided and must be installed to reduce the risk of burns, especially for children and at-risk individuals.
  • Fire/Explosion Hazard: Do not store or use flammable vapors or liquids near the appliance. If gas is smelled, do not light any appliance, do not touch electrical switches, leave the building, and call the gas supplier or fire department.
  • Glass Integrity: Do not operate the appliance with removed, cracked, or broken glass fronts. Replacement must be done by a licensed professional with complete manufacturer-supplied units.
  • Ventilation: Never obstruct the flow of combustion and ventilation air. Keep the front of the appliance clear of obstructions. The unit must be vented directly outside and never attached to a chimney serving a solid fuel burning appliance.
  • Child Safety: Children should be carefully supervised and kept away from the hot fireplace. The remote control handset should be kept out of reach of children.
  • California Proposition 65 Warning: This product can expose users to chemicals including Benzene, which is known to cause cancer and birth defects or other reproductive harm.

The manual also includes a Frequently Asked Questions section to address common concerns like odors during first use, noises, condensation, and white film on the glass, as well as error codes for remote control operation. Warranty information is provided, detailing coverage for parts and conditions that may void the warranty.
