Overview

This document is an instruction manual for the WEN Variable Speed Jig Saw, Model #33606. It provides comprehensive information regarding the tool's function, technical specifications, usage, and maintenance, ensuring safe and reliable operation for its users.

The WEN Variable Speed Jig Saw is a portable power tool designed for creating both straight and curved cuts in various materials. Its primary function is to cut wood, metal, and plastics with precision and ease, making it suitable for a wide range of DIY and professional projects. The tool is engineered to WEN's high standards for dependability, ease of operation, and operator safety, promising years of rugged, trouble-free performance when properly cared for and used according to its intended purpose.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model Number: 33606
  • Motor: AC 120V, 60Hz, 6.6A
  • Variable Speed: 0 to 3300 SPM (Strokes Per Minute)
  • Wood Cutting Capacity: 4-1/4 inches (110 mm)
  • Metal Cutting Capacity: 3/8 inches (10 mm)
  • Bevel Angle: 45° Left & Right
  • Dust Port Outer Diameter: 1-1/2 inches
  • Assembled Dimensions: 9-3/8 x 3-1/4 x 8-5/8 inches
  • Product Weight: 5.4 lbs
  • Blade Type: T-shank blades only (U-shank blades are not accepted)
  • Replacement Blades: Model 33606BW (Wood Blade) and 33606BM (Metal Blade) can be ordered from wenproducts.com.

Usage Features:

The jig saw incorporates several features designed to enhance user experience, precision, and safety:

  • Variable Speed Dial: Allows users to adjust the blade stroke rate from 1 (lowest speed) to 6 (highest speed, 3300 RPM). This feature enables optimal cutting speed selection based on the material being cut, blade type, and desired feed rate. Slower speeds are recommended for denser materials, while faster speeds are suitable for softer materials.
  • Blade Orbital Action Selector: Offers four settings (0 to 3) to control the blade's orbit travel distance.
    • Setting 0: Straight up and down motion for smooth cutting, ideal for hard materials (metals, thin sheet metals), plunge cuts, curves, and sharp edges.
    • Setting 1: For medium-hard materials (hardwood, aluminum) and thin workpieces, also suitable for round and sharp edge cuts.
    • Setting 2: For soft materials (wood, plastics) where cleaner cutting or delicate scrolling is required.
    • Setting 3: Elliptical stroke for faster, more aggressive cutting in soft materials (wood, plastics).
  • Tool-less Blade Changing System: Facilitates fast and easy changes of T-shank blades without the need for additional tools. Users simply pull the blade change lever clockwise, insert the blade shank (teeth facing forward, back resting in the roller guide, "T" part fully inserted), and release the lever.
  • Adjustable Bevel Angle: The base plate can be adjusted up to 45° to the left or right for bevel cuts. This adjustment is made by loosening two hex screws, pulling back the base plate to disengage the angle lock pin, tilting the plate to the desired angle (0°, 15°, 30°, or 45° markings are provided), pushing the plate forward to engage the lock pin, and tightening the screws.
  • LED Light/Laser Switch: A button on the front of the tool controls the integrated laser and LED light.
    • Press 1: Activates the laser for precise cut line guidance.
    • Press 2: Activates the LED light to illuminate the workpiece.
    • Press 3: Activates both laser and light.
    • Press 4: Turns off both features.
    • Note: Laser safety rules emphasize not staring directly into the beam or pointing it at reflective surfaces, people, or animals.
  • Power Indication Light: A green light indicates the tool is connected to power. A red light signals a problem, prompting the user to disconnect the tool and contact customer service.
  • Air Blowing Switch: This switch allows users to toggle between air blowing mode (ON position) to clear dust from the cut line during operation, and dust extraction mode (OFF position) for connecting to a dust collector.
  • Dust Port Adapter: Included for connecting the tool to a dust extraction system, with an outer diameter of 1.5 inches.
  • Parallel Guide Fence: Can be attached to either side of the tool to assist in making straight, parallel cuts. It is adjusted by loosening lock knobs, sliding the fence to the desired position (using the laser for guidance), and tightening the knobs.
  • Lock-On Button: Allows for continuous operation without holding down the power trigger, reducing user fatigue during extended use.

Maintenance Features:

Proper maintenance is crucial for the longevity and safe operation of the WEN Jig Saw.

  • Cleaning: The tool should be cleaned after every use with a soft cloth. Ventilation openings must be kept free from dust and debris. Solvents should be avoided for cleaning plastic parts, as they can cause damage. The saw blade should be removed and wiped clean with a dry cloth after use.
  • Carbon Brush Replacement: To maintain maximum motor efficiency, the two carbon brushes should be inspected every 60 hours of operation. Replacement carbon brushes (Part No. 33606-019) are available from wenproducts.com. Brushes should be replaced when their length gets down to 3/16 of an inch or when the tool sparks or stops working. Both brushes should be replaced simultaneously. Accessing the brushes involves removing the clear plastic blade guard and unscrewing 11 screws from the right housing.
  • Periodic Maintenance Schedule: Users are encouraged to develop a regular maintenance schedule, including lubrication and accessory changes.
  • Safety Precaution for Maintenance: Always disconnect the power cord from the electrical outlet before making adjustments, changing parts, or performing any maintenance to prevent accidental start-ups.
  • Product Disposal: Used power tools, containing electrical or electronic components, should be recycled at a local recycling facility to minimize environmental impact.

The manual also includes general safety rules, specific rules for jig saws, and electrical information, including guidelines for using extension cords and details on double insulation. It emphasizes the importance of personal protective equipment (safety goggles, ear protection, work gloves, dust mask) and maintaining a clean, well-lit work area. The tool is covered by a limited two-year warranty for home use, with a 90-day warranty for professional use, covering defects in material or workmanship, but excluding accessory items that wear out from regular usage.
