Overview

The WEN Variable Speed Electric Shear, Model #3650, is a robust power tool designed for cutting various metal sheets with precision and ease. Engineered to WEN's high standards for dependability, ease of operation, and operator safety, this product promises years of rugged, trouble-free performance when properly cared for and used for its intended purpose.

Function Description:

The WEN Electric Shear is primarily used for cutting sheet metal and stainless steel. It features a variable speed trigger switch, allowing users to control the strokes per minute of the cutting mechanism for precise and adaptable operation. The shear's head can swivel up to 360 degrees, providing flexibility for different workpiece requirements and cutting angles. This tool is designed to produce a scrap curl of approximately 7/32 inches during operation, which should be accounted for when measuring cuts.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Model Number: 3650
  • Motor: 120 V, 60 Hz, 4A
  • Speed: 0 to 2500 strokes per minute, controlled by a variable speed trigger.
  • Maximum Cutting Capacity:
    • 14 gauge for Sheet Metal
    • 20 gauge for Stainless Steel
  • Head Swivel: 360°
  • Product Weight: 4.7 pounds
  • Product Dimensions: 11 x 3 x 8 inches
  • Grounding: The tool is equipped with an electric cord that has an equipment grounding conductor and a grounding plug, requiring connection to a properly installed and grounded matching outlet.
  • Extension Cord Guidelines: For optimal performance and safety, extension cords should be in good condition and adequately sized. For a 4A tool, recommended gauge for extension cords are: 18 gauge for 25 ft, 16 gauge for 50 ft, 14 gauge for 100 ft, and 12 gauge for 150 ft.
  • Electrical Circuit: A separate electrical circuit of at least #12 wire, protected with a 15 A time-delayed fuse, is recommended.

Usage Features:

  • Variable Speed Trigger Switch: Allows for precise control over cutting speed. Pressing the trigger further increases the strokes per minute.
  • Lock Button: The shear can be locked into its maximum speed by pressing the trigger all the way down and simultaneously engaging the lock switch. To turn off the tool when locked, squeeze and then release the trigger.
  • 360° Swivel Head: The cutting head can be rotated up to 360 degrees to accommodate various cutting angles and workpiece orientations. This adjustment is made by loosening three hex screws, rotating the head, and then retightening the screws.
  • Practice Cuts: Users are advised to make practice cuts on scrap material to familiarize themselves with the tool's operation before working on the actual workpiece.
  • Safety Instructions: Emphasizes reading the manual, avoiding dangerous conditions (wet/damp areas, flammable liquids/gases), maintaining a clean and well-lit work area, keeping bystanders at a safe distance, not forcing the tool, dressing appropriately (no loose clothing, non-slip footwear, safety gloves, tied-back long hair), wearing a face mask or dust mask, and always removing the power cord plug before making adjustments or maintenance.

Maintenance Features:

  • No Additional Lubrication Required: The tool is properly lubricated from the factory.
  • Cleaning: The tool should be cleaned with a dry cloth; water or chemical cleaners are not recommended. Keep motor ventilation slots, guards, and base clean and free of debris. Compressed dry air can be used for effective cleaning, always with safety goggles.
  • Carbon Brushes: Designed for long service, but should be examined every two to six months for peak motor efficiency. Only genuine WEN replacement brushes should be used. They are accessible by unscrewing four screws along the handle and removing the left half of the handle's housing.
  • Bearings: Noisy bearings (due to heavy load or abrasive material cutting) should be replaced promptly to prevent overheating or motor failure.
  • Blade Replacement: After extended use, the cutting blades will become dull and require replacement. This involves removing three hex screws to detach the swivel head, carefully sliding out the old blades, noting the configuration and presence of two spacers, and then installing new sharpened blades and spacers in the same configuration before reattaching the head and tightening the hex screws.
  • General Maintenance: Keep tools clean and in good working order, follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories, and check for damaged parts before use. Any damaged part should be properly repaired or replaced.
