Overview

This document is a user manual for Westinghouse 540mm and 600mm Slot-In Upright Range Cookers, covering models WFE517, WFE547, WFE616, WFE619, WFE642, WFE647, and WFG617. It provides comprehensive information on the appliance's functions, safety instructions, installation, usage, and maintenance.

Function Description

The Westinghouse upright range cooker is designed for household and similar applications, featuring a hotplate and an oven for cooking. Depending on the model, the hotplate can be electric ceramic or gas, and the oven can be electric or gas.

  • Hotplate: The hotplate features multiple cooking zones with individual controls. Electric models (WFE517, WFE547, WFE616, WFE619, WFE642, WFE647) utilize ceramic hotplates with concealed heating elements under a smooth glass surface. Gas models (WFG617, and some WFE models with gas hotplates) feature burners with burner crowns, caps, and trivets. Some gas models include an intense heat wok burner.
  • Oven: The oven compartment is designed for baking, roasting, and grilling. Electric ovens (WFE models) often include fan-forced baking, which distributes heat evenly, allowing for multi-shelf cooking and cooking from a cold start. Gas ovens (WFG617) have a burner flame that adjusts after reaching the set temperature.
  • Grill: The appliance includes a grill function. Some models have a separate grill compartment, while others integrate the grill within the oven. Electric grills are operated by a control knob. Gas grills (WFG617) require electronic ignition and feature a flame safeguard system.
  • Timer: A 120-minute mechanical ringer timer is supplied, allowing users to set a desired cooking duration, after which an audible signal will sound.

Important Technical Specifications

The manual provides specific technical details for different models, particularly regarding electrical and gas connections.

  • Electrical Supply: Appliances requiring connection to 230-240V MUST be earthed. WFE619 and WFE517 models are fitted with a 20-Amp service cord, while WFE616 and WFG617 models are fitted with a 10-Amp service cord. Hard-wired models (WFE547, WFE642, WFE647) have specific total wattage and current ratings, with cable section requirements (e.g., WFE547/WFE647: 10.5 KW, 43.8 Amps, 4.0 MM2 cable; WFE642: 8.7 KW, 36.3 Amps, 2.5 MM2 cable), and a minimum temperature rating of 75°C for the cable.
  • Gas Supply (for gas models):
    • Natural Gas: Supply pressure at inlet to appliance regulator (if fitted) is 1.13 kPa minimum. Operating pressure at appliance test point is 1.00 kPa.
    • Universal LPG: Supply pressure at inlet to appliance regulator (if fitted) is 2.75 kPa minimum. Operating pressure at appliance test point is 2.75 kPa (WFG617) or 2.60 kPa (WFE517, WFE616, WFE619).
    • Injector Orifice Sizes: Specific injector sizes are provided for different burners (e.g., Low heat burner: 1.00 mm NG, 0.55 mm LPG; Intense heat wok burner: 1.75 mm NG, 1.00 mm LPG; Oven main injector: 1.60 mm NG, 0.82 mm LPG).
    • Hourly Gas Consumption: Ranges from 30.2 MJ/h (WFE517 LPG) to 63.3 MJ/h (WFG617 NG).
  • Cabinetry Requirements: Surrounding kitchen cabinets MUST withstand 85°C. Electric hob models require at least 100mm clearance from side walls. Gas hob models require a minimum clearance of 100mm to side walls made of unprotected combustible materials.
  • Anti-tilt Plate and Stabilising Bolt: These must be installed on all cookers (electric and gas) to prevent accidental tipping.

Usage Features

The manual details various features to optimize cooking and ensure safety.

  • Hotplate Usage:
    • Ceramic Hotplates: Recommend using pans with smooth, clean, and dry bottoms. Pan bottom size should match the element size. Stainless steel or enamelled saucepans are best. Avoid copper or aluminium bottoms as they can leave traces.
    • Gas Hotplates: Electronic ignition (mains powered) or push-button ignition is available. Flame safeguard models require holding the knob down for approximately 5 seconds after ignition. Burners must be operated between 'HIGH' and 'LOW' settings only.
    • Utensil Selection: Diagrams illustrate suitable and unsuitable utensils for both electric and gas hotplates, emphasizing flat bottoms and appropriate sizes.
  • Oven Usage:
    • Preheating: For best baking results, preheat the oven for 30 minutes (recommended for conventional ovens and some fan-forced applications).
    • Shelf Positions: Five shelf positions are available, numbered 1 (lowest) to 5 (highest). Recommendations are given for single-shelf (position 3) and two-shelf (positions 2 and 4) cooking.
    • Fan Forced Baking: Allows for cooking on all shelves simultaneously with even browning and at slightly lower temperatures. Can be used from a cold start for casseroles and fruit cakes.
    • Defrost Function: Uses circulated air from the fan to defrost food, raise yeast dough, or dry fruit/vegetables/herbs.
    • Condensation Management: Minimise water in cooking, ensure the oven door is firmly closed, and use lids for casseroles to reduce condensation.
  • Grill Usage:
    • Preheating: Preheat the grill for at least 3 minutes for best results.
    • Food Placement: Use the grill dish and insert. Do not place food directly on the bottom of the grill compartment or use aluminium foil under food.
    • Separate Grill Models: The door must be open while grilling.
    • Grill in Oven Models: The grill dish with wire insert can be used in the two upper height positions (shelf positions 4 and 5). The grill dish must be removed when baking.
  • Timer: Turn the knob clockwise to the desired number of minutes. For times below ten minutes, turn past the thirty-minute mark and then back.

Maintenance Features

The manual provides detailed instructions for cleaning and troubleshooting.

  • Cleaning:
    • General: Do not use abrasives or harsh scourers on steel and enamel surfaces. Clean immediately after food spillage.
    • Enamel: Wipe with a soft cloth and warm soapy water. For difficult stains, use a nylon scourer or cream powder cleanser.
    • Stainless Steel: Clean regularly in the direction of the grain using suitable cleaners.
    • Oven Shelves: Wash with detergent and hot water; use a non-abrasive nylon scourer for stubborn dirt.
    • Oven - Grill Dish and Insert: Wash with warm soapy water and oven cleaner after every use.
    • Oven Interior: Use detergent, warm water, and a soft cloth. For heavy grease build-up, use an oven cleaner and heat the oven to 110°C, then turn off and leave overnight.
    • Glass Surfaces: Clean immediately after soiling with a damp cloth. Oven cleaners can be used for stubborn marks. Do not use harsh cleaners or sharp metal scrapers on oven door glass.
    • Ceramic Hotplate: Remove spilt food and fat with a razor blade scraper while warm. Apply ceramic glass cleaner when cool. Avoid abrasive sponges.
    • Gas Burners: Remove flame port blockages with a small metal cake skewer or nylon brush. Clean spark plugs gently with a nylon scourer. Use a non-abrasive cleaning compound for heavily soiled caps, crowns, and cups. Do not clean these parts with abrasive/caustic cleaners or in a dishwasher.
    • Oven Light: Turn the oven light glass anti-clockwise to remove for globe replacement. Use a special high-temperature resistant globe.
  • Troubleshooting (Solving Problems): A table lists common problems (e.g., oven/grill not working, uneven cooking, cracked crusts) with possible causes (e.g., power not turned on, incorrect shelf position, baking temperature too high) and recommended solutions (e.g., switch on electricity, select correct shelf, lower temperature).
  • Warranty: The appliance comes with a 24-month warranty against manufacturing defects in Australia and New Zealand. It covers repair or replacement of defective parts. Exclusions include damage from misuse, normal wear and tear, incorrect installation, and servicing by unauthorised personnel. Proof of purchase is required for claims.
  • LPG Conversion (for specific gas models): Detailed instructions are provided for converting Natural Gas models (WFE517, WFE616, WFE619) to Universal LPG, including replacing injectors, adjusting the regulator, and checking flame stability.
