Overview

This document describes the Westinghouse Sous Vide Immersion Cooker, a kitchen appliance designed for precise temperature cooking. The device is intended for indoor domestic use and is not a toy. It operates by heating a water bath to a set temperature, allowing for consistent and controlled cooking of various foods.

Function Description

The Westinghouse Sous Vide Immersion Cooker is a circulator that maintains a precise water temperature for sous vide cooking. It features an LED display that shows current temperature and timer settings. The device includes a power button, temperature display, increase and decrease function buttons, a timer display, and settings function. A function indicator and LED indicator light provide visual feedback on the unit's status. The main body of the cooker houses the heating element, probes, and circulator shaft, all protected by a stainless steel sleeve and a plastic end cap. A clamp on the side allows the unit to be securely attached to a cooking container.

Usage Features

To use the sous vide immersion cooker, first, ensure your container is filled with enough water to cover the min level indicator on the stainless steel sleeve but remain below the max level indicator. The unit requires a 6 to 15-liter container or pot to function effectively, and it will not operate if the min level indicator is not submerged. Securely clamp the sous vide onto the side of your container using the spring-loaded clamp.

Plug the cooker into an A/C power outlet. The display will show 'O' flashing, and the power button and LED indicator light will illuminate red, indicating standby mode. Press the power button once; the unit will then flash the last used timer and temperature settings.

To set the temperature, press the settings and function indicator button once. The temperature display will flash independently. Use the increase and decrease function buttons to select your desired temperature. After setting the temperature, press the function indicator again to toggle to the time display function.

The time display will initially flash minutes. Use the increase and decrease function buttons to select the desired minutes. Press the function button again to toggle to the time function for hours, and select the required number of hours.

Once both temperature and time are set, press the power button to activate the sous vide immersion cooker. The unit will begin heating the water to the desired temperature and will automatically switch off when the timer countdown is complete. Upon completion, the unit will beep multiple times to signal that the cycle has finished and it has shut off.

Before removing food from the container, always turn off the power at the A/C outlet and unplug the power cord from the wall. Once unplugged, remove the sous vide from the container.

For shorter cooking times, evaporation is typically not an issue. However, for foods requiring longer cooking times, it is recommended to cover your cooking container with aluminum foil or plastic wrap to minimize liquid loss due to steam and evaporation. It is crucial that food is completely submerged in the water bath to ensure safe and uncontaminated cooking. If necessary, use heavy metal items such as spoons, stainless steel weights, or similar items to help weigh down the food bag or pouch.

The manual provides general guidelines for cooking temperatures and times for various food types, including beef, lamb, pork, poultry (boneless and with bones), fish/seafood, and vegetables. These guidelines are indicative, and users are encouraged to experiment to achieve results that best suit their preferences. Pork and poultry must be thoroughly cooked to avoid health risks. For optimal flavor, it is highly recommended to grill, fry, sear, or bake all foods for a few minutes after completing the sous vide process. Since all sous vide immersion cookers operate by heating a water bath to a set temperature, any sous vide recipe can be used with this Westinghouse model.

Maintenance Features

Always switch off the appliance and remove the power plug before cleaning. Do not immerse the power cord, mains plug, or the sous vide upper body in water or any other liquid. Avoid using harsh or abrasive cleaning agents. The outer surface of the sous vide can be cleaned with a soft, damp cloth and dried thoroughly. A mild dishwashing detergent may be used on the cloth but should not be applied directly to the cooker.

Over time, due to water mineral content, the sous vide immersion cooker may develop scale build-up. To remove this, add the juice of a lemon or a few tablespoons of descaler solution to the water in the container and run the unit for 30 minutes without any food present. Afterward, rinse thoroughly.

For more thorough cleaning, the unit can be partially disassembled by removing the stainless steel sleeve. To do this, unscrew and remove the screw located on the left-hand side of the sous vide immersion cooker. Once the screw is removed, twist the stainless steel sleeve in an anti-clockwise direction and slide it off. This provides access to the heating element, probes, and circulator shaft for manual cleaning. The sleeve can be further disassembled by removing the plastic end cap. To remove the end cap, grip the stainless steel sleeve and turn the plastic end cap in a clockwise direction. Reassemble the unit by reversing these steps. When reassembling the metal sleeve to the sous vide body, align the dimple closest to the max level indicator with the arrow on the sous vide body before twisting to lock it into place.

Wait for the sous vide to cool completely before moving or storing it. Keep the sous vide and its cord out of reach of children younger than 8 years old. Close supervision is necessary when the appliance is used by or near children. Cleaning and user maintenance should only be performed by an adult. After unplugging, the heating element will remain hot and should not be touched or placed on combustible surfaces.
