Overview

The Whynter Portable Dehumidifier is an ENERGY STAR-rated appliance designed to remove moisture from the air through condensation, collecting the water in a drain bucket or draining it via a hose. It is suitable for indoor residential applications and is particularly beneficial for controlling humidity in basements, humid climates, and for individuals with respiratory problems or allergies, as it helps prevent mold and dust mites.

Function Description:

When the dehumidifier is started, a fan pulls moisture-laden air across dehumidifying coils. These coils condense moisture from the air, and dry, warm air is then expelled through the top louver into the room. The collected moisture is stored in a drain bucket located at the front of the unit. The appliance features an automatic 3-minute time-delayed start for the compressor to prevent overheating and circuit breaker tripping. It operates within a temperature range of 41°F (5°C) to 96°F (35°C).

The dehumidifier offers three operating modes:

  • Continuous Mode: The unit continuously dehumidifies regardless of room humidity. Humidity control buttons are disabled, and the compressor only stops if the drain bucket is full or removed.
  • Comfort Mode: The unit automatically controls room humidity within a comfortable range of 45%–55% RH based on room temperature. Humidity control buttons are disabled, and the compressor stops only if the drain bucket is full, removed, or the humidity reaches the comfort range.
  • Normal Mode: The user can set a desired humidity level and fan speed. The compressor turns on if room humidity is higher than the set level and turns off if it's lower.

The unit also includes an "Energy Saver" feature where the fan continues to run even after the set RH% is reached, to avoid high start-up amperage, making it more energy-efficient. The fan may run continuously or intermittently depending on the RH% and set humidity.

Important Technical Specifications:

The Whynter Portable Dehumidifier comes in three models: RPD-321EW, RPD-421EW, and RPD-621EW, differing primarily in dehumidifying capacity and drain bucket size.

Usage Features:

  • Control Panel: The control panel includes buttons for Mode, Filter, Fan, Power, Up, Down, and Timer.
  • Humidity Set Control: Humidity levels can be set from 35%RH to 85%RH in 5% increments using the Up and Down buttons.
  • Fan Speed: Users can select between Turbo and Normal fan speeds using the Fan button.
  • Timer Function: The Timer button allows setting an Auto-stop (delay OFF) or Auto-start (delay ON) time from 0.0 to 24 hours in 1-hour increments. It also supports a sequence of Auto-start followed by Auto-stop.
  • Bucket Full Indicator: An indicator light illuminates when the drain bucket is full, and the dehumidifier stops operating. The digital display will show "P2".
  • Auto Defrost Indicator: If frost builds on the evaporator coils (at temperatures below 53°F/12°C), the compressor cycles off, and the fan continues until the frost evaporates. The Auto Defrost light turns on during this process.
  • Auto Restart: In case of a power outage, the appliance restarts with its previously set function mode and settings (except for the Timer function) once power is restored.
  • Water Drainage: Water can be collected in the front drain bucket or continuously drained using the provided 20" continuous/gravity drain hose. For continuous drainage, the unit must be placed on a level surface at least 12 inches above the ground, and the drain hose must be positioned horizontally below the drainage hole without distortions.
  • Placement: The unit should be placed on a smooth, hard, and level surface, allowing at least 10" of air space on all sides and 20" or more above for proper air circulation. It should not be placed near heat sources or in areas where temperatures fall below 53°F.

Maintenance Features:

  • Air Filter: The dehumidifier is equipped with a 2-in-1 silver-coated washable pre-filter. This filter removes large particles like dust and pet hair and has a silver coating to kill bacteria, viruses, fungi, and spores. The "Filter" button and indicator light remind users to clean the filter after approximately 250 hours of operation.
    • Cleaning: The air filter should be cleaned at least every two weeks by vacuuming or tapping to remove dust, then rinsing under warm or cold water (not hotter than 100°F), and thoroughly drying before reinstallation. The unit should never be operated without the air filter.
  • Main Unit: The air grille and main unit can be cleaned with a damp cloth and mild detergent. Avoid using bleach, chemicals, abrasives, or splashing water directly on the unit.
  • Drain Bucket: The drain bucket should be cleaned every two weeks to prevent mold, mildew, and bacteria growth. Fill it with clean warm water and mild detergent, then dry thoroughly. Do not clean the bucket in a dishwasher.
  • End of Season Storage: Before storage, turn off the unit and wait 24 hours for excess moisture to drain. Clean the main unit, drain bucket, and air filter. Cover the unit with its original plastic bag or a dust cover, and store it upright in a dry, well-ventilated place.

Safety Precautions:

  • Always read instructions before use.
  • Do not use flammable fluids or oil-based products for cleaning.
  • Ensure the power plug is fully and firmly inserted into a properly grounded wall socket. Avoid using multiple sockets or extension cords.
  • Do not tamper with controls or attempt to repair the appliance yourself.
  • Always turn off and unplug the appliance before cleaning or transporting.
  • Do not remove the drain bucket during operation.
  • Transport the appliance in an upright position. If it has been tilted, leave it upright for at least 2 hours before use.
  • Ensure objects do not obstruct the exhaust and air intake.
  • Never insert fingers or other objects into air intakes and outlets.
