Overview

The Wood-Mizer MP160 Planer/Moulder is designed for straight and profiled planing of wooden elements used in the production of wooden houses and other construction elements in the building industry and garden programs. It can process two sides of a workpiece in one action. The machine features a stable and strong chassis with a planed cast iron table.

Function Description:

The workpiece is fed, lying on the planer table, through the planer by feed rollers and an outfeed roller. These rollers are driven by a chain transmission with a separate motor. Lateral control of the workpiece is achieved with adjustable fences and pressure rollers. The planing and moulding operations are performed by a top cutter and side cutter, which are fixed to the planer table. All cutters are driven by separate motors via a belt transmission. For safety, the cutters and feed rollers are covered by a protective cover plate equipped with a safety switch. A 100 mm (4") diameter hose is connected to the cutter for dust extraction.

Important Technical Specifications:

The MP160 planer/moulder is available in various electrical configurations, including single-phase (1 ph 230V CE/UL) and three-phase (3 ph 230V CE/UL, 3 ph 400V CE, 3 ph 460V UL).

    • MP160EH3S-V (Adjustable Feed Speed): 2-12 m/min
  • Noise Level: LwA = 102dB (A) for electric motor equipped models.
  • Vibration: Hand-arm vibration exposure does not exceed 2.5 m/s². Whole operator's body weighted acceleration does not exceed 0.5 m/s².
  • Power Supply: For 400 VAC, a 14 A fused disconnect switch is recommended with a 1.5 mm² wire size up to 15 m long. A 30mA GFI (Ground Fault Interrupter) is recommended.

Usage Features:

The planer/moulder is designed for indoor use, with temporary outdoor use permitted during good weather. It operates in temperatures ranging from -15°C to +40°C. Mechanical ventilation in accordance with standards is required. The machine must be connected to a dust extractor, which should be turned on during operation.

  • Safety Distances: Other than the operator, no one should be within 3 meters of the planer/moulder's sides or 8 meters from the in and outfeed sides during operation.
  • Table Surface: The table is made of high-quality cast iron, specially processed for high precision and anti-friction qualities. A breaking-in period is required for new machines, during which a lubricant or wax is recommended on the table.
  • Control Panel: Features an emergency stop switch (red button) that disconnects power to all functions. An indicator light shows when power is on. A white button starts the cutter and feed motors, and a black button stops them.
  • Planing/Thicknessing Adjustment: Planing thickness is adjusted with the top table handle, then locked with a locking handle. The set thickness is read on a scale. A protective guard covers the workpiece from the upper side. Planing angle (0-45 degrees) can be adjusted. Thicknessing depth is adjusted with a crank, from 0.3 mm to 4 mm.
  • Outfeed Table Adjustment: Factory-adjusted, but can be fine-tuned with a micro adjustment bolt to be 0.02-0.05mm above the highest position of the knives.
  • Knife Adjustment: Planing knives must be adjusted to be level with the outfeed table using an aluminum block. Knives should be ground in pairs to maintain balance and prevent vibrations.

Maintenance Features:

  • Regular Cleaning: Keep the machine and surrounding area clean. Dispose of sawdust and other by-products properly.
  • Pre-Operation Checks: Ensure all guards and covers are in place and secured. Check that knobs, screws, nuts, fences, sleeves, planing cutters, and knives are properly tightened. Verify that the cutter rotates freely and no tools are left on the machine.
  • Electrical Safety: All electrical installation, service, and maintenance work must be performed by a qualified electrician according to applicable electrical codes. Disconnect and lock out power supply before servicing.
  • Emergency Stop: The machine is equipped with emergency switches that must be in proper working condition.
  • Drive Belt Tension Adjustment:
    • Top Cutter: Check tension after the first 20 hours of operation and every 50 hours thereafter. Unbolt and remove the cutter drive belt cover, loosen motor plate mounting bolts, adjust the drive belt, then re-tighten. Check motor and cutter pulleys alignment.
    • Roller Drive Chain: Unbolt and remove the roller drive chain cover. Loosen the tensioner bolt and move the tensioner up/down to adjust chain tension.
  • Sawdust Removal: Remove excess sawdust and chips from inside and outside the planer/moulder using compressed air or a brush every eight hours of operation.
  • Miscellaneous Maintenance: Oil all chains with Dexron III ATF every fifty hours of operation. Lubricate feed roller bushings, sprockets, and table height adjustment chain every fifty hours using paraffin oil.
  • Long-Term Storage:
    • Disconnect the power cord.
    • Remove knives and store them well lubricated in above-zero temperature.
    • Loosen the motor belt tension.
    • Spray a thin layer of anti-rust coating (e.g., P.D.R.P) on unprotected areas.
    • Store the machine in a well-ventilated room and cover it.
