Overview

The WyreStorm EX-35-H2-ARC is an 18Gbps 4K HDR HDBaseT Extender with True ARC and Audio Breakout, designed to extend high-bandwidth audio and video signals over long distances. This device is ideal for professional AV installations requiring reliable transmission of 4K HDR content, including 2160p at 4:4:4 60Hz, while also supporting audio return channel (ARC) functionality and audio breakout capabilities.

Function Description

The EX-35-H2-ARC operates as a transmitter/receiver pair, utilizing HDBaseT technology to send HDMI signals, IR, RS-232, and power over a single Cat6/6a/7 cable. The transmitter (TX) unit connects to the source device (e.g., a 4K HLG or HDR source) via HDMI, and also features an S/PDIF Out and Source Audio Out for audio breakout. The receiver (RX) unit connects to the display (e.g., a 4K HDR HDMI display) via HDMI Out, and includes an S/PDIF In for audio return.

A key feature of this extender is its support for True ARC, allowing audio from the display to be sent back to the transmitter over the HDBaseT link. This is particularly useful for smart TVs or displays with built-in tuners that need to send audio to an AV receiver connected at the source end. The device also supports HDCP 2.2, ensuring compatibility with the latest protected content.

Power over HDBaseT (PoH) is integrated, meaning only one power supply is required for either the TX or RX unit, simplifying installation and reducing cable clutter. The device handles 18Gbps bandwidth, making it suitable for demanding 4K HDR applications with high frame rates and deep color.

Usage Features

The EX-35-H2-ARC is designed for straightforward installation and operation. The front panel of both the TX and RX units features LED indicators for Power, Status, HDCP, and Link, providing quick visual feedback on the device's operational state.

  • Power LED: Indicates whether the unit is powered on or off.
  • Status LED: Flashes when the unit is operating normally, and is off when not operating.
  • HDCP LED: Solid when HDCP content is present, flashing when not present, and off when no signal is detected.
  • LINK LED: Solid when a link to the receiver has been established, and flashing when not established.

The rear panel offers all necessary connections:

  • Power In: A 5.5mm screw-down barrel jack for the included 12V DC 3A power supply.
  • HDBT In/Out: RJ-45 ports for the HDBaseT connection between the transmitter and receiver.
  • IR TX/RX: 3.5mm jacks for connecting IR emitters and receivers, enabling control of local devices from remote locations.
  • RS-232: A 3-pin Phoenix connector for serial control, allowing integration with control systems.
  • HDMI In/Out: Standard 19-pin Type A HDMI female connectors for source and display connections.
  • S/PDIF In/Out: TOSLINK (Digital Optical) connectors for audio breakout and return.

For audio return, the receiver unit includes an "Audio Return Input" switch, which can be set to "ARC" to receive audio from the display via the HDMI connection, or "S/PDIF In" to receive audio from the display via the S/PDIF In connection. This flexibility allows integrators to choose the most appropriate audio return path based on the system design.

The device supports various video resolutions and distances, with performance varying based on cable type (Cat6, Cat6a/7) and resolution. For example, 1080p @60Hz 12bit can be extended up to 70m/230ft over Cat6/6a/7, while 4K HDR signals (e.g., 3840x2160p @24Hz 10bit 4:2:0 HDR) can reach 35m/115ft over Cat6/6a/7.

Maintenance Features

While the EX-35-H2-ARC is designed for robust performance, proper installation and occasional troubleshooting are key to its longevity and reliability.

  • Wiring Guidelines: WyreStorm emphasizes the importance of proper wiring. It recommends running and terminating all wiring before making connections to the switcher. Avoiding patch panels, wall plates, cable extenders, kinks, and electrical interference is crucial for optimal signal transmission. Using pre-terminated HDMI cables is also advised due to the complexity of HDMI connectors.
  • Firmware Updates: Users are encouraged to visit the product page to download the latest firmware, ensuring the device operates with the most current features and bug fixes.
  • Troubleshooting: The Quickstart Guide provides a dedicated troubleshooting section for common issues like "No or Poor Quality Picture" and "No or Intermittent 3rd party Device Control."
    • For picture issues, verifying power, HDMI/HDBaseT connections, proper HDBaseT cable termination (EIA568B standard), supported resolutions, and EDID settings are recommended. Using 3D or 4K rated HDMI cables for corresponding content is also important.
    • For control issues, checking IR and RS-232 cable termination is advised.
    • WyreStorm suggests using a cable tester or connecting cables to other devices to verify functionality, which can help diagnose cable-related problems efficiently.
  • CEC Compatibility: While the product supports CEC pass-through, WyreStorm notes that it cannot guarantee compatibility with all forms of CEC communication due to variations between different manufacturers' implementations.
  • IR TX/RX Guidelines: For optimal IR performance, using WyreStorm infrared emitters and receivers is recommended. If using 3rd party devices, ensure they operate in the same manner as WyreStorm devices. Direct connection of 3rd party IR ports to a NetworkHD system is not recommended due to potential incompatibilities. WyreStorm offers specific cables to compensate for voltage and pin differences.

The EX-35-H2-ARC is a low-maintenance device once properly installed, designed to provide reliable 4K HDR extension for demanding AV environments. Its robust build and comprehensive feature set make it a suitable choice for professional integration.
