TIPS AND TRICKS TO ENSURE PROPER TRUNK DOOR CLEARANCE
ADJUSTMENT CHECK LIST:
CARGO BOXES
Loosen the clamps on the inside of the box.
Once they’re free shift them all the way forward or backward.
You will be able to adjust the box this way.
Open the hatch and adjust the box accordingly so there is
space between the door and the box. Figure 2
Make sure the box is strait and the clamps are around the bars.
Once they’re all situated tighten the clamps. Done!
OTHER ROOF MOUNTS
If your crossbars are adjustable*, move the front bar forward as
far as it can go, then adjust to the correct crossbar spread for
the product. *Do not adjust your crossbars if you have Yakima®
BaseLine towers or Q towers.
ADJUSTABLE ROOF RACK SYSTEMS:
TimberLine Towers, SkyLine Towers* with Tracks, RidgeLine Towers*, OverHaul HD, OutPost HD, BedRock HD, BedRock, Outdoorsman,
and most Factory Roof Racks. *Some vehicles have a ixed crossbar spread, check yakimatech.com for your vehicle’s crossbar capabilities
in the measurements section.

Overview

This manual provides comprehensive information on Yakima's hatch clearance for cargo boxes and fishing rod carriers, offering tips and tricks to ensure proper trunk door clearance. It details how to measure for the best fit and provides an adjustment checklist for various roof mounts and adjustable roof rack systems.

Function Description

The Yakima hatch clearance guide serves as a crucial resource for users looking to install cargo boxes and fishing rod carriers on their vehicles while maintaining proper trunk door clearance. The primary function is to prevent interference between the vehicle's trunk door and the mounted cargo system, ensuring safe and convenient access to the trunk. By providing precise measurement guidelines and adjustment procedures, the manual helps users select the correct product size and configure their roof rack system optimally. This prevents potential damage to both the vehicle and the cargo system, enhancing the overall user experience. The guide also highlights the importance of proper installation for the longevity and performance of Yakima products.

Usage Features

Hatch Measurement: To determine the ideal cargo box or fishing rod carrier, users must measure the distance from the center of the front crossbar to the edge of the open trunk door. This measurement, illustrated in Figure 1, is critical for selecting a product that will not obstruct the trunk's operation. It is emphasized that this measurement should be taken across the top of the crossbars, not the side, to ensure accuracy. This precise measurement helps users avoid common installation errors and ensures a seamless fit.

Adjustment Checklist for Cargo Boxes: The manual provides a step-by-step guide for adjusting cargo boxes to achieve proper clearance.

  1. Loosen Clamps: Begin by loosening the clamps located on the inside of the cargo box. This allows for free movement of the box.
  2. Shift Position: Once the clamps are loose, shift the cargo box either all the way forward or backward. This flexibility allows users to find the optimal position for clearance.
  3. Test Clearance: Open the vehicle's hatch and adjust the box accordingly until there is sufficient space between the door and the box. This iterative process, depicted in Figure 2, ensures that the trunk can open fully without hitting the cargo box.
  4. Align and Tighten: After achieving the desired clearance, ensure that the cargo box is straight and that the clamps are properly positioned around the crossbars. Finally, tighten the clamps securely to lock the box in place. This ensures stability and safety during transit.

Adjustment Checklist for Other Roof Mounts: For other roof mounts, if the crossbars are adjustable, users should move the front bar as far forward as possible. Subsequently, the crossbar spread should be adjusted to match the specific requirements of the product being mounted. It is important to note that users should not adjust their crossbars if they have Yakima® BaseLine towers or Q towers, as these systems have fixed crossbar spreads. This distinction helps prevent incorrect adjustments and potential damage.

Adjustable Roof Rack Systems: The manual lists various adjustable roof rack systems, including TimberLine Towers, SkyLine Towers* with Tracks, RidgeLine Towers*, OverHaul HD, OutPost HD, BedRock HD, BedRock, and Outdoorsman, as well as most Factory Roof Racks. For these systems, users are advised to check yakimatech.com for their vehicle's specific crossbar capabilities in the measurements section, especially since some vehicles have a fixed crossbar spread. This ensures that users are aware of any limitations or specific instructions for their particular vehicle and roof rack setup.

Maintenance Features

While the manual primarily focuses on installation and adjustment, several aspects contribute to the maintenance and longevity of the device:

  • Proper Installation: Adhering to the detailed measurement and adjustment instructions is a key maintenance feature. Correct installation prevents undue stress on the cargo box, roof rack, and vehicle, thereby extending the lifespan of all components. Incorrect installation can lead to wear and tear, or even damage, which would necessitate repairs or replacements.
  • Secure Fastening: The emphasis on tightening clamps securely after adjustment ensures that the cargo box remains stable during travel. Loose clamps can lead to movement, which can cause abrasion, structural fatigue, and potential loss of cargo. Regular checks of clamp tightness, especially before long trips, can be considered a maintenance routine.
  • Awareness of Fixed Systems: The warning not to adjust crossbars on Yakima® BaseLine towers or Q towers, or for vehicles with fixed crossbar spreads, is a preventative maintenance measure. Attempting to adjust fixed systems can cause damage to the roof rack or the vehicle's roof, leading to costly repairs. Users are directed to yakimatech.com to verify their vehicle's crossbar capabilities, promoting informed usage and preventing accidental damage.
  • Product Compatibility: The detailed list of cargo boxes and their corresponding dimensions, along with the various adjustable roof rack systems, helps users select compatible products. Using incompatible products can lead to improper fit, increased wear, and potential safety hazards. Ensuring compatibility from the outset is a crucial aspect of long-term maintenance and safe operation.
  • Regular Inspection: Although not explicitly stated as a maintenance step, the nature of the adjustment checklist implies that users should regularly inspect their setup. Before each use, especially after initial installation or significant adjustments, checking the clearance, the straightness of the box, and the tightness of the clamps ensures continued safe operation. This proactive approach helps identify and address minor issues before they escalate into major problems.

By following these guidelines, users can ensure that their Yakima cargo boxes and fishing rod carriers are installed correctly, function optimally, and are maintained in a way that prolongs their life and ensures safety on the road.
