Overview

The Yale Keyfree is an advanced electronic door lock system designed to provide enhanced security and convenient access to your home. This device integrates multiple locking and unlocking methods, including PIN codes and remote controls, ensuring flexibility and ease of use for various scenarios.

Function Description

The primary function of the Yale Keyfree is to secure your door. It offers both internal and external locking mechanisms. From the inside, you can securely lock the door by simply pressing a push button and lifting the handle. This action immediately engages the lock, providing security at any time. From the outside, after closing the door, you must lift the handle within a set connection time. Once the lever disengages, you are prompted to either enter your PIN code or press a remote control button, followed by lifting the lever again within the connection time to securely lock the door.

The system includes a "Passage mode" where the handle remains operable at all times, bypassing the need for PIN or remote input. This mode is useful for periods when frequent, unrestricted access is desired. The automatic disconnection time, which dictates how long you have to complete the locking sequence from the outside, is user-configurable, allowing you to adjust it to your preference.

For unlocking, the Yale Keyfree supports two primary methods: PIN code entry and remote control. To open the door using a PIN code, you press any button to activate the keypad, enter your registered PIN code, press the "Enter" button, and then push down the outer handle. For remote control access, you simply press the button on your remote control, and then push down the outer handle.

The device also incorporates a voice instruction system that provides feedback on the lock status, such as "lock closed, securely locked," accompanied by a red LED indicator, ensuring you are always aware of your door's security status.

Usage Features

The Yale Keyfree is designed with user convenience in mind, offering several features that enhance its usability.

PIN Code Registration: The system allows for the registration of multiple PIN codes. A "Family code" can be set for permanent residents, while "Visitor codes" can be created for guests or service personnel. Visitor codes can be easily changed or deleted without affecting the family code, providing flexible access management. The PIN codes can range from 4 to 12 digits in length.

Remote Control Registration: You can register multiple remote controls to the system. The registration process involves pressing specific buttons on the remote and the lock simultaneously for a few seconds, indicated by a red LED on the remote. This allows all family members to have their own remote for convenient access.

Handle Handing: The device is adaptable to both left and right-handed doors. During installation, a specific handing screw must be fitted to ensure correct operation of the outside lever. Failure to do so may result in the outside lever rotating freely without engaging the lock. The system also includes a voice handing feature that can be adjusted if the inside lever is fitted to a right-hand side door and the voice instructions are opposite to the actual action (e.g., saying "lock closed securely locked" when opening the door).

Child Safety/Security Button: The inside handle incorporates a child safety or security button. The inside lever will not move unless this button is depressed, preventing accidental unlocking from the inside, especially by children. When the inside lever returns to its horizontal position, the button automatically re-engages. If it doesn't re-engage, a slight lift of the inside lever will reset it.

Mechanical Back-Up Key: In case of electronic failure or battery depletion, the Yale Keyfree includes a mechanical back-up key. To use it, turn the key 90 degrees, push the outside lever down, and open the door. Remember to remove the key after use.

Installation Considerations: It is crucial to complete the door installation before fitting the Keyfree unit. During the installation process, it is advised not to close the door until a PIN code or remote has been successfully registered to avoid being locked out. The installation guide provides detailed steps for fixing the cylinder, fitting the spindle, and attaching the handing screw, emphasizing the importance of light tightening for certain screws and careful handling of components like the handing screw to ensure proper functionality.

Maintenance Features

The Yale Keyfree is designed for relatively low maintenance, but certain aspects are important to ensure its longevity and reliable operation.

Battery Management: The device is powered by batteries, which will need periodic replacement. The manual instructs on how to insert the batteries. While not explicitly stated, electronic locks typically provide low battery warnings, prompting users to replace them before they completely drain.

Component Care: During installation, it is recommended to use a hand Philips screwdriver to avoid cross-threading fixing screws. If using a cordless screwdriver, it should be set to a low speed and torque to prevent damage. Special attention should be paid to inserting the remote control module, as its pins can easily bend, and damage may not be covered under warranty. Care should also be taken not to damage the spring when fitting the inside handle.

Regular Checks: After installation, it is important to perform several checks to ensure the system is functioning correctly. This includes verifying the free movement of both inside and outside levers, checking the operation of the inside handle's child safety/security button, and confirming that the mechanical back-up key works properly. These checks help ensure that all components are correctly installed and operating as intended, contributing to the overall security and reliability of the lock.

The Yale Keyfree is a robust and user-friendly electronic lock system that combines advanced security features with convenient access options, making it a suitable choice for modern homes.
