Shim Valve Adjustment Overview
Valve clearance is measured by inserted a feeler gauge, in the specified thickness range*,
between the rocker arm and the valve adjustment shim as shown in the illustration.
If the clearance is excessive, the valve adjustment shim is replaced with a
thicker shim.
If there is insufficient clearance, the shim is replaced with a thinner shim.
Refer to the appropriate service manual for the complete measurement,
valve adjustment shim selection and pad replacement procedures.
The valve adjustment shim is
‘cupped-shaped’ and fits onto
the valve stem, effectively changing
the overall length of the valve.
Shims will be available in a
range of thicknesses (0.05mm
increments), and are marked with the size
e.g., 280 = 2.80mm (0.110 in)
285 = 2.85mm (0.112 in)
