Overview

This document is a service manual for the Yamaha R7, specifically models YZF690 and YZF690-U, for the 2022 model year. It serves as a comprehensive reference for mechanics, providing detailed instructions for all aspects of vehicle maintenance, repair, and assembly. The manual is structured to facilitate easy navigation and understanding, ensuring that technicians can efficiently perform necessary tasks.

The manual begins with an "IMPORTANT" section, emphasizing its intended use by qualified mechanics at Yamaha dealerships. It highlights that a basic understanding of mechanics and repair techniques for these types of vehicles is assumed. For fundamental instructions, users are directed to a separate "BASIC INFORMATION" volume. The importance of proper repair and maintenance work is stressed to ensure vehicle safety and fitness for use. Yamaha's commitment to continuous improvement is noted, with modifications and significant changes to be communicated to authorized dealers and incorporated into future editions of the manual. A "TIP" clarifies that a revision to the manual will result in an increment of the last digit of its number. It also points out that the manual contains information on periodic maintenance for the emission control system and that designs and specifications are subject to change without notice.

Following this, an "IMPORTANT MANUAL INFORMATION" section defines the various notations used throughout the manual to distinguish important information. The safety alert symbol (an exclamation mark within a triangle) is introduced as a warning for potential personal injury hazards, urging users to obey all safety messages to prevent injury or death. A "WARNING" indicates a hazardous situation that could lead to death or serious injury if not avoided. A "NOTICE" signifies special precautions to prevent damage to the vehicle or other property. Finally, a "TIP" provides key information to simplify procedures or make them clearer. The copyright information for the YZF690/YZF690-U Service Manual, published by Yamaha Motor Co., Ltd. in August 2021, is also provided, explicitly prohibiting unauthorized reproduction or use.

The "HOW TO USE THIS MANUAL" section details the organizational structure and conventions of the manual. It explains that the manual is designed as a handy, easy-to-read reference, with procedures laid out in sequential order. The manual is divided into chapters, which are further subdivided into sections. The current section title is displayed at the top of each page, and sub-section titles appear in smaller print. Exploded diagrams are used at the beginning of removal and disassembly sections to help identify parts and clarify procedure steps. Numbers in these diagrams indicate the order of jobs for disassembly. Symbols are used to indicate parts that require lubrication or replacement, with a reference to a dedicated "SYMBOLS" section for their definitions. A job instruction chart accompanies each exploded diagram, outlining the order of jobs, part names, and notes for removal and disassembly. For installation and assembly, the steps are to be reversed. Jobs requiring more detailed information, such as special tools or technical data, are described sequentially.

The "SYMBOLS" section provides a comprehensive list of symbols used in the manual for easier understanding. These symbols represent various actions, materials, or conditions relevant to servicing. Examples include symbols for "Serviceable with engine mounted," "Filling fluid," "Lubricant," "Special tool," "Tightening torque," "Wear limit, clearance," "Engine speed," "Electrical data," and "Engine oil." Specific symbols are also provided for different types of lubricants and agents, such as "Gear oil," "Molybdenum disulfide oil," "Brake fluid," "Wheel bearing grease," "Lithium-soap-based grease," "Molybdenum disulfide grease," "Silicone grease," and "Apply locking agent (LOCTITE®)." A "New" symbol indicates that a part should be replaced with a new one. The manual notes that not all symbols may be relevant to every vehicle.

The "TABLE OF CONTENTS" lists the main chapters of the manual: "GENERAL INFORMATION," "SPECIFICATIONS," "PERIODIC CHECKS AND ADJUSTMENTS," "CHASSIS," "ENGINE," "COOLING SYSTEM," "FUEL SYSTEM," "ELECTRICAL SYSTEM," and "SELF DIAGNOSTIC." Each chapter is assigned a number for easy reference.

The "GENERAL INFORMATION" chapter begins with "IDENTIFICATION," which covers the "VEHICLE IDENTIFICATION NUMBER" and "MODEL LABEL." The vehicle identification number (VIN) is stamped on the right side of the steering head pipe, and the model label is affixed to the frame under the passenger seat. Both are crucial for ordering spare parts.

The "FEATURES" section within "GENERAL INFORMATION" describes the "MULTI-FUNCTION METER UNIT." This unit provides various displays, including transmission gear, speedometer, tachometer, fuel meter, clock, and a multi-function display, along with a quick shift indicator if equipped. The "SEL/RES" switch controls the multi-function meter.

The multi-function meter unit offers several usage features:

  • Switching the display units: The display units can be toggled between kilometers and miles. This is done by setting the multi-function display to the odometer or a tripmeter and then holding the "SEL" switch until the units change.
  • Speedometer: Displays the vehicle's traveling speed.
  • Tachometer: Allows the rider to monitor engine speed and keep it within the ideal power range. A "NOTICE" warns against operating the engine in the tachometer red zone (10000 r/min and above).
  • Fuel meter: Indicates the amount of fuel in the tank. Segments disappear from "F" (full) to "E" (empty). When approximately 2.5 L (0.66 US gal, 0.55 Imp.gal) of fuel remain, the last segment flashes, prompting refueling. A "TIP" notes that flashing segments can also indicate an electrical circuit problem, directing users to the "SIGNALING SYSTEM" section.
  • Clock: Displays time in a 12-hour format. Instructions are provided for setting the clock by using the "RES" and "SEL" switches while the vehicle is off and then turned on.
  • Transmission gear display: Shows the selected gear, with "-" and the neutral indicator light indicating neutral.
  • Multi-function display: This versatile display includes an odometer, two tripmeters (TRIP 1 and TRIP 2), a fuel reserve tripmeter (TRIP F), instantaneous fuel consumption (km/L, L/100 km, or MPG), average fuel consumption (AVE_ km/L, AVE_ L/100 km, or AVE_ MPG), coolant temperature (_ _ °C), and air temperature (_ _ °C). The "SEL" switch cycles through these displays. A "TIP" mentions that the fuel reserve tripmeter appears only when fuel is low and that the "RES" switch can change the display in reverse order.
  • Odometer: Shows the total distance traveled by the vehicle. A "TIP" states that it locks at 999999 and cannot be reset.
  • Tripmeters: Show distances traveled since their last reset. They can be reset by selecting the desired tripmeter and holding the "RES" switch. A "TIP" notes that tripmeters reset and continue counting after 9999.9.
  • Fuel reserve tripmeter: Activates when the last fuel meter segment flashes, counting distance traveled since then. It can be manually reset or automatically resets after refueling and traveling 5 km (3 mi).
  • Instantaneous fuel consumption display: Shows current fuel consumption in km/L, L/100 km, or MPG. Units can be switched by holding the "SEL" switch. A "TIP" advises using this feature for general reference only and notes that "--.-" is displayed when traveling under 10 km/h (6 mi/h).
  • Average fuel consumption display: Shows average fuel consumption since the last reset, in km/L, L/100 km, or MPG. It can be reset by holding the "RES" switch. A "TIP" indicates that "--.-" is shown after resetting until the vehicle has traveled some distance.
  • Coolant temperature display: Shows coolant temperature from 40 °C to 116 °C. If "HI" flashes, the vehicle should be stopped and allowed to cool. A "TIP" notes "Lo" is displayed below 40 °C and that temperature varies with weather and engine load.
  • Air temperature display: Shows air temperature from -9 °C to 50 °C. A "TIP" states that "_ _" is displayed below -9 °C.

The multi-function meter unit also includes maintenance features related to display brightness and shift timing indicator light settings:

  • Display brightness and shift timing indicator light settings mode: This mode allows adjustment of display brightness, shift timing indicator light ON/FLASH/OFF, ON r/min, OFF r/min, and brightness. To access this mode, the vehicle must be off, then the "SEL" switch held while turning the vehicle on until the display changes. The "RES" switch adjusts values, and the "SEL" switch confirms and cycles to the next setting. A "TIP" confirms that the settings mode exits after all settings are confirmed.
  • Display brightness: An indicator bar appears, adjusted with the "RES" switch and confirmed with the "SEL" switch.
  • Shift timing indicator light: Has three settings:
    • ON setting: Light comes on and stays on at a set engine speed.
    • FLASH setting: Light flashes 4 times per second at a set engine speed.
    • OFF setting: Light is deactivated, flashing once every 2 seconds to indicate the setting.
  • Shift timing indicator light ON r/min: Can be set between 6000 r/min and 12000 r/min in 200 r/min increments. The light comes on and stays on, and the selected increment is displayed on the tachometer.
  • Shift timing indicator light OFF r/min: Can also be set between 6000 r/min and 12000 r/min in 200 r/min increments. The light flashes, and the selected increment is displayed. A "TIP" advises setting OFF r/min higher than ON r/min to ensure the light activates while riding.
  • Shift timing indicator light brightness: The light comes on and stays on during adjustment, changing brightness as the level is adjusted with the "RES" switch and confirmed with the "SEL" switch.

The "SPECIAL TOOLS" section lists necessary tools for complete and accurate tune-up and assembly, emphasizing the use of appropriate tools to prevent damage. It provides a table with tool names, tool numbers, illustrations, and reference pages within the manual where each tool is used. Examples include the Yamaha diagnostic tool (USB and A/I versions), thickness gauge, valve lapper, vacuum gauge, carburetor angle driver, steering nut wrench, oil filter wrench, pressure gauge, oil pressure adapter, fork spring compressor, rod holder, damper rod holder, and fork seal driver. This section is critical for ensuring that maintenance and repair tasks are performed correctly and safely.
