Overview

This document describes a series of single-package, water-cooled air conditioning units manufactured by YORK, a brand of Johnson Controls Unitary Products. The technical guide covers models CU060-300 (5-25 tons, vertical) and CH060-120 (5-10 tons, horizontal).

Function Description

These units are designed for cooling applications and can be used with cooling towers, well or surface water (provided water temperature and GPM meet application limitations), or brackish/salt water with a secondary heat exchanger. They are suitable for various installation types: as freestanding units within conditioned spaces (with available supply air plenum and return air grille accessories), or in equipment rooms with ductwork for both supply and return air.

The units are factory-assembled, piped, wired, charged, and tested, arriving ready for immediate installation. Only power supply wiring, thermostat wiring, condenser water piping, condensate drain piping, and ductwork are required for complete setup.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Cooling Capacity:
    • CH060: 5 tons (64,100 Btuh gross cooling capacity)
    • CH096: 8 tons (101,800 Btuh gross cooling capacity)
    • CH120: 10 tons (126,000 Btuh gross cooling capacity)
    • CU060A: 5 tons (63,300 Btuh gross cooling capacity)
    • CU096A: 8 tons (100,600 Btuh gross cooling capacity)
    • CU120A: 10 tons (127,800 Btuh gross cooling capacity)
    • CU180A: 15 tons (188,600 Btuh gross cooling capacity)
    • CU240A: 20 tons (246,800 Btuh gross cooling capacity)
    • CU300: 25 tons (322,000 Btuh gross cooling capacity)
  • Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER): Ranges from 11.5 to 13.4 depending on the model.
  • Compressor Type: All models utilize Scroll type hermetic compressors.
    • 5-ton units: Single refrigeration circuit.
    • 8-20 ton units: Two independent refrigeration circuits.
    • 25-ton units: Three independent refrigeration circuits.
  • Evaporator Coils: Constructed of internally enhanced copper tubes mechanically bonded to rippled aluminum plate fins. Employed in a draw-through configuration with inter-laced circuiting. Large evaporator coil face area minimizes potential water blow-off.
  • Condensers: High-efficiency tube-in-tube condensers with convoluted inner tube design. Standard models feature a copper inner tube surrounded by a steel outer tube, carrying a 400 psig working pressure rating. Dual circuit models feature internally manifolded condensers.
  • Indoor Fans: Forward curved, double inlet, double width centrifugal blowers for evaporator air movement. Large diameter wheels provide required airflow performance at minimum RPM and noise levels. Blower wheels are galvanized steel, with solid steel shafts supported by permanently lubricated ball bearings. All blowers are belt-driven with variable-pitch motor sheaves for field adjustment of blower RPM.
  • Cabinet: Constructed of 18 Ga. corrosion-resistant "Galvalume" coated steel. The entire interior (evaporator and condensing sections) is insulated with 1/2" thick, 2 lbs. density insulation. Duct flanges for return air intake and evaporator discharge are provided. CU240 and CU300 filter rack is external (shipped loose).
  • Water Connections: Condenser water connections range from 1" FPT to 2" FPT depending on the model. Condensate drain connection is 3/4" FPT.
  • Electrical/Controls: Completely factory wired with necessary controls. Manual reset protection for evaporator blower motors and compressor control circuits (high/low pressure cutout). 24-volt control circuit with oversize transformer for field connection. Designed for conventional thermostat control interface.

Usage Features

  • Application Flexibility: These "cooling only" units can be applied with cooling towers, well/surface water, or brackish/salt water (with secondary heat exchanger).
  • Installation Options: Can be installed as freestanding units within conditioned spaces (with optional accessories) or in equipment rooms with ductwork.
  • Airflow Configuration:
    • Horizontal (CH) units: Designed for suspended mounting. HWC models ship with 'straight-through' evaporator fan discharge as standard, field convertible to side discharge.
    • Vertical (CU) units: Designed for freestanding floor mounting.
    • Supply Air/Return Air Configuration: All models are field convertible for multiple supply return configurations. 5-15 ton models feature a removable upper fan module that can be rotated 180° for top rear discharge. The blower outlet panel can be interchanged with the front panel for horizontal discharge (front or rear). 20-25 ton units also allow blower outlet panel interchange for horizontal discharge.
  • Water-Side Economizer (Optional): A field-installed kit consisting of a water cooling coil, pre-assembled external piping sections, a three-way motorized valve, and controls for operation from a 24-Volt thermostat. This feature allows for substantial operating cost reductions by utilizing low-temperature water for cooling.
  • Hot Water & Steam Coils (Optional): Hydronic heating coils can be mounted on the return air side of the cooling coil.
  • Return Air Grill (Optional): Available for 5-15 ton CU models, recommended for applications where return air is not ducted.
  • Discharge Plenum (Optional): Mounts on top of the evaporator section with fans arranged for vertical discharge. Double deflection grills allow air discharge in multiple directions.
  • Hot Gas Bypass (Optional): Adjustable hot gas regulator and piping installed on the lead compressor circuit, with minimum 50% bypass capacity. Prevents coil freeze-up at light evaporator load or low airflow conditions. Factory-installed Condenser Pressure Control is strongly recommended with Hot Gas Bypass.
  • Condenser Pressure Control (Optional): Water regulating valves control condenser water flow by sensing condensing temperature. Provides a regulating valve for each internal condenser water circuit. Standard valves carry a 150 psig working pressure rating and are installed inside the unit cabinet.

Maintenance Features

  • Service Panels: Equipped with lifting handles for ease of removal and handling.
  • Filters: All models ship with 2-inch thick medium-efficiency throwaway filters factory installed. Filters are accessible from either the front or right side on 5-15 ton models.
  • Anti-Short Cycle Timer: Provided for each compressor circuit, locking out the compressor for 5 minutes when thermostat contacts open or during a momentary power outage.
  • Corrosion Resistant Coatings (Optional): Evaporator coil can receive a 1-mil cathodic epoxy electro-deposition coating applied in a multiple dip and bake process.
  • Stainless Steel Drain Pan (Optional): Evaporator coil (and optional Water Side Economizer coil) drain pan can be fabricated from 304 stainless steel. The 3/4 in NPT drain connection fitting is also 304 stainless steel.
  • Oversized Evaporator Fan Motors (Optional): Increased horsepower motors and drive components are available as a kit for field upgrade in applications where external static pressure requirements exceed standard motor capability.
