Overview

The document is an installation instructions and user manual for the Zip Aquapoint III, a series of direct unvented water heaters.

Function Description

The Zip Aquapoint III is an unvented water heater designed for direct connection to the incoming mains water supply. It can serve one or more outlets using conventional taps. The unit accommodates expanded hot water that occurs with each heating cycle. A manually resettable safety cut-out automatically cuts off the electrical supply to the heating element in case of a malfunction. A sacrificial magnesium anode is fitted to the vessel to provide anti-corrosion protection for both the vessel and the heating element.

Important Technical Specifications

Usage Features

  • Installation: Must be installed vertically. Hot supply (red) is on the left, cold supply (blue) on the right when facing the heater. Overbasin models have connections underneath, undersink models have connections at the top. Undersink and oversink models are not interchangeable.
  • Temperature Control: A temperature control knob allows adjustment from 9°C to 75°C. The economy 'e' setting maintains approximately 41°C for AP3/05/0B, AP3/05 models, and 35°C for AP3/10/0B, AP3/10, AP3/15/0B, AP3/15 models, minimizing limescale formation and heat loss. The maximum stored water temperature can be limited by adjusting a knob limiter inside the unit.
  • Frost Protection: The temperature control knob can be set to '*' to maintain a stored water temperature of approximately 9°C, protecting the heater from freezing (does not extend to pipework).
  • Safety Features: Includes a manually resettable safety cut-out for over-temperature situations. The appliance must be earthed and connected to the supply through an isolating switch with contact separation of at least 3mm in all poles, protected by a suitably rated RCD and MCB/cartridge fuse.
  • Water Expansion Management: Regulations permit expanded hot water to be accommodated within the supply pipework if no check valve or stop valve prevents reverse flow. For static water supply pressures under 3.5 bar, accessory pack AQ2 (expansion vessel and check valve) is recommended. For pressures exceeding 3.5 bar, accessory pack AQ2 and AQ3 (pressure reducing valve and line strainer) are recommended. A 6 bar expansion relief valve must be fitted on the cold water supply. An optional temperature and pressure relief valve (AQ1) can be used.
  • Pre-wiring: The unit comes pre-wired with a 3-core cable for connection to a 230V AC mains supply via a double pole fused spur (minimum 13 amps).

Maintenance Features

  • Regular Inspections: Key components should be inspected at no greater than 12-month intervals by a competent person (electrician or plumber) familiar with unvented systems.
  • Sacrificial Anode Check: The condition of the magnesium anode should be checked regularly to ensure its effectiveness in protecting the vessel and element from corrosion. This can be done visually by removing the element assembly or electrically by checking the current between the anode and vessel (should exceed 0.4mA). If badly corroded or if the current is insufficient, the anode should be replaced.
  • Valve Operation Checks: Expansion relief valve and T&P relief valve (if fitted) should be checked for correct operation.
  • Expansion Vessel Check: If an expansion vessel is fitted, its pressure should be checked according to the label on the side of the vessel.
  • Line Strainer Cleaning: If a pressure reducing valve is fitted, the integral line strainer should be inspected and cleaned as necessary.
  • Discharge Pipe Check: Ensure the discharge pipe is free of obstructions.
  • Electrical Connections: All electrical connections should be checked for tightness.
  • Limescale Prevention: To minimize limescale formation, the unit should always be operated at the lowest convenient temperature, as damage or failures caused by limescale are excluded from the warranty.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides a fault-finding guide for common issues such as over-temperature cut-out, intermittent or continuous water discharge from the tundish, no hot water flow, and cold hot water.
  • Safety Precautions: Always disconnect the appliance from the mains power supply before carrying out any work. Do not use the water heater if suspected of being frozen. Isolate power and water supply immediately in case of malfunction, leaks, or seepage, and contact a competent person for repairs. Do not block or restrict safety valve discharge or tamper with safety valves.
