Overview

The A.O. Smith Epsilon EB-40/50 is a light commercial, high-efficiency, condensing boiler designed for central heating and domestic hot water applications. This user manual provides essential information for the end-user regarding its operation, safety, and basic maintenance. For installation and servicing, a separate manual is provided for the installer.

Function Description:

The Epsilon boiler is a room-sealed, condensing, and modulating central heating boiler. It uses a compact stainless steel heat exchanger with smooth tubes, designed for durability and high efficiency. The boiler burns gas to supply warmth, transferring heat to the water in the central heating system. During this process, flue gases are cooled, leading to the formation of condensate, which is then drained through an internal siphon. This condensing technology contributes to the boiler's high efficiency.

The boiler is equipped with an intelligent Control Management System (CMS) that anticipates the heat demand for both central heating and hot water. When an outside sensor is connected, the boiler operates in a weather-dependent manner, measuring outside and flow temperatures to calculate the optimal flow temperature for the installation. This intelligent control ensures very high efficiency, with low radiation, convection, and standby losses. The emission of noxious substances is also significantly below fixed standards.

Important Technical Specifications:

The manual does not explicitly list detailed technical specifications such as power output, dimensions, or weight. However, it highlights key operational parameters:

  • Water Pressure: Optimal functioning occurs with a water pressure between 1.5 and 1.7 bar. If pressure drops below 1 bar, the display shows "FILL," and the boiler operates at a reduced level. Below 0.7 bar, "FILL" flashes, and the boiler shuts down.
  • Flow Water Temperature (CH): The boiler allows adjustment of the flow water temperature for central heating. Factory settings and options for different installation types are provided:
    • Radiators; air heating; convectors: 85°C
    • Radiators with large surface areas or underfloor heating as additional heating: 70°C
    • Underfloor heating with radiators as additional heating: 60°C
    • Full underfloor heating: 50°C (factory setting)
  • Automatic De-aeration Program: After filling, the boiler initiates an automatic de-aeration program (indicated by "A xx" on the display) lasting approximately 17 minutes to remove air from the system.

Usage Features:

The boiler's control panel, located behind a small door on the left side, features a display and several function keys for user interaction. An instruction card explaining display messages and function keys is provided on the right side of the door.

Display Readings:

  • Good Reading: Under normal circumstances, the display shows "Good." In case of a fault, it alternates between "Good" and an "E" (Error) or "BL" (Blocking) with a number code.
  • Technical Reading: This reading shows the boiler's operating status. The first figure indicates the active status, and the third and fourth figures indicate the water temperature. For example, "P 1.9" indicates water pressure, with "P" for pressure and "1.9" for 1.9 bar. Users can switch between "Good" and "Technical" readings by pressing the "Step" key for 5 seconds.

Function Keys:

  • Central Heating On/Off: Illuminates an LED when active.
  • Domestic Hot Water (DHW) On/Off: Illuminates an LED when active.
  • Pump Program On/Off: Continuously on/off. Illuminates an LED when active. This feature allows continuous pump circulation during severe frost to prevent pipes from freezing, especially when an outside sensor is not connected.
  • Mode Key: Used for selecting chapters and accessing adjustment settings.
  • Step Key: Used for scrolling through options and briefly displaying water pressure from the "Good" reading.
  • Reset Key: Used to restart the boiler after a fault (indicated by a flashing "E" and a number code). If the error persists, the installer should be contacted.

Replenishing the Central Heating System:

The manual provides a step-by-step procedure for filling the central heating installation with potable water using the filling loop:

  1. Switch off all functions (heating, DHW, pump).
  2. Briefly push the 'STEP' button to display water pressure (P x.x).
  3. Slowly open the filling loop until the display indicates 1.5 to 1.7 bar.
  4. "STOP" appears on the display.
  5. Close the filling loop.
  6. De-aerate the complete installation, starting from the lowest point.
  7. Check and top up water pressure if necessary.
  8. Close the filling loop.
  9. Activate required functions (heating, DHW, pump).
  10. If "A xx" appears, wait 17 minutes for the automatic de-aeration program.
  11. Re-check and top up water pressure to 1.5 to 1.7 bar if needed.
  12. Close the filling loop.
  13. Press the 'STEP' button.
  14. Ensure the filling loop is closed. After the de-aeration program, the boiler returns to "Good" or "Technical" reading.

Turning the Boiler Off:

  • Holiday Period: Adjust the thermostat to holiday mode and switch off the hot water facility using the program key on the control panel.
  • Re-setting the Central Heating System: Switch off all three program keys, then switch off the power supply. If draining the boiler, be aware that some heating water will remain, and precautions against freezing should be taken in frosty conditions.

Adjusting Flow Water Temperature (CH):

  1. From the "Technical" reading, press the "Mode" key briefly. "PARA" will show.
  2. Press the "Step" key once. "1 85" will show.
  3. Use the "+" or "-" keys to alter the temperature.
  4. Press the "Store" key to confirm (display flashes once).
  5. Press the "Mode" key briefly. "StbY" shows briefly, then returns to "Technical" reading. The adjusted flow water temperature applies only to central heating, independent of the hot water facility for the cylinder.

Adjusting Type of Installation:

The boiler can be adjusted for different heating system types (convectors, underfloor heating, etc.) to optimize maximum water-flow temperature and warm-up after a night period.

  1. From the "Technical" reading, press the "Mode" key once.
  2. Press the "Step" key twice. "2 01" will show.
  3. Use the "+" or "-" keys to select the installation type (refer to the table for corresponding flow temperatures).
  4. Press the "Store" key to confirm (display flashes once).
  5. Press the "Mode" key once. "StbY" shows briefly, then returns to "Technical" reading. The manual notes that if a low water-flow temperature installation type is chosen, it might need to be adjusted to a higher flow temperature during severe winter periods, typically by an installer during commissioning.
