Questions and Answers

Overview

The ADTRAN Total Access 300 Series GigE SFU GPON ONTs with RF Overlay are Single Family Unit (SFU) Optical Network Terminations (ONTs) designed for Gigabit Passive Optical Network (GPON) applications with an RF Overlay. These devices provide a consistent and common approach to advancing public communications networks by supporting traditional telephone service (POTS), high-speed data services, and video services.

Function Description:

The SFU ONTs act as the customer premises component of a GPON network, connecting to an Optical Line Terminal (OLT) at the central office via an Optical Distribution Network (ODN) of fibers and passive splitters/couplers. They facilitate the transmission of downstream and upstream traffic on a single fiber using different wavelengths: 1490 nm for downstream, 1310 nm for upstream, and an additional 1550 nm for overlay RF TV distribution.

The Total Access 361 SFU ONT features 2 POTS interfaces and 1 Gigabit Ethernet interface. The Total Access 362 SFU ONT offers 2 POTS interfaces and 2 Gigabit Ethernet interfaces. Both models are designed to be housed in Corning Systems Model FNI-NG series outdoor NID housings.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Operational Temperature Range: -40°C to +65°C
  • Storage Temperature Range: -40°C to +85°C
  • Voltage Range: 10.5 to 15 VDC
  • Maximum Current: 1.5 Amps
  • Relative Humidity: 95%, noncondensing
  • Dimensions: 9.7"W x 12"H x 4"D
  • Weight: 3 lbs 0.8 oz (enclosure and electronics module)
  • Operating Altitude Range: -197 feet (-60 meters) to 13000 feet (3962 meters), with a derating of 1°C/1000 feet (3.3°C/km) for ambient temperature.
  • Ethernet Ports:
    • Total Access 361: ETH 1 (Data and/or Video)
    • Total Access 362: ETH 1, ETH 2 (Data and/or Video)
  • Compliance: NRTL Listed to UL safety standards, meets or exceeds NEBS and Telcordia GR-63-CORE requirements.
  • FCC Compliance: Complies with Part 15 of FCC rules, subject to not causing harmful interference and accepting any interference received.
  • Laser Safety: Contains a Class 1 Laser Module compliant with 21 CFR 1040.10 and 1040.11.
  • Grounding: Requires connection to a known, reliable earth ground using a 6 AWG copper ground conductor, as part of a Common Bonding Network (CBN).
  • Power Input: Designed to operate with nominal 12 VDC (minimum 10.5 VDC) and will not be damaged by steady state voltages between 10.5 VDC and 15.0 VDC.

Usage Features:

  • Installation: The enclosure is designed for vertical surface mounting. The electronics module swings open on hinges for easy access during installation.
  • Ground Connection: A #6 solid copper ground wire is routed through a rubber grommet to a ground bar, then to the AC power ground system of the customer premises.
  • Power/Alarm Connections: Utilizes a 7-conductor Euro-style Power/Alarm connector for connections from a UPS. Pin-out information is provided for LOW BAT, BAT MIS, REP BAT, ON BAT, SIG RTN, 12V RTN, and +12VDC.
  • OptiTap Fiber Drop Cable Routing: The OptiTap fiber drop is routed through the same rubber grommet channel as the ground cable, ensuring the fiber is not pinched when the electronics module is closed.
  • SC/APC Optical Connection: Fiber is routed through a grommet entrance and connected to the SC/APC optical connection, with care taken to avoid bends less than 30 mm (1.2 inches) radius.
  • Local Power Source Wiring: The SFU ONT must be powered by a UL Listed Power Supply suitable for LPS Levels, as recommended by the power supply manufacturer.
  • UPS Installation: The Uninterruptible Power Source (UPS, P/N 1187730G1) cable connects to the SFU ONT's Power/Alarm connector.
  • POTS Connection: Telephone service can be connected using two-screw terminal bridges or directly to RJ-11 jacks. RJ-11 jacks also serve as diagnostic test points, isolating subscriber service for fault isolation.
  • RF Connection: The RF cable is routed through a large grommet and attached to the RF connector on the bottom of the electronics module.
  • Ethernet Connection: Supports up to 1 Gigabit operation (10/100/1000) using CAT-6 cable and RJ-45 plugs.
  • Front Panel LEDs:
    • POWER: Off (No power), Green (Power is On).
    • NETWORK STATUS: Off (Administratively Shut Down), Green (Normal), Yellow (Test in progress), Red (Fault Condition).
    • POTS 1 and 2: Off (Administratively Shut Down), Green (Off Hook), Green Flashing (Ringing), Yellow (Test mode), Red (Fault).
    • ETH 1 and 2: Off (Link is down: no activity or Administratively Shut Down), Green (10/100/1000 Link is up), Yellow Flashing (TX or RX activity).

Maintenance Features:

  • No Routine Hardware Maintenance: The SFU ONT does not require routine hardware maintenance for normal operation.
  • Repair Services: ADTRAN does not recommend field repairs. Defective units should be returned to ADTRAN for repair services.
  • Software Support: Field support for software is provided through upgrade facilities.
  • ESD Precautions: When handling modules, an antistatic discharge wrist strap should be worn, and modules should be placed in antistatic packing material.
