Colon (:)
When a
colon is
placed between
two command
mnemonics
,
the
colon
moves the
current path
down one
level on
the command
tree
.
When
the colon
is the
rst character
of
a
command,
it
species
the
following
command mnemonic
is a
root-level command.
Semicolon (;)
A semicolon
separates two
commands
in
the
same
message
without
changing the
current path.
Figure 5-1
shows examples
of
how
to
use
the
colon
and
semicolon
to
navigate
eciently
through
the
command
tree
.
Common
commands
,
such
as
*RST
,
are
not
part
of
any
subsystem.
The
4339B
interprets
them
in
the
same
way
,
regardless
of
the
current
path
setting.

Message Syntax
This
section
provides
the
construction
of
SCPI
program
message
.
A
program
message
is
the
message
that
you
send
from
a
computer
to
an
instrument.
Program
messages
consist
of
commands
combined with
appropriate
punctuation
and
program
message
terminators
.
Command
Abbreviations
Many commands have a long and a short
form. In this manual, all commands are spelled out in
a longer form. The Short form is obtained
by deleting the lower case letters
.
For example
, the short form of
:INITiate
is
:INIT
and the long form of it is
:INITIATE
.
(SCPI does not accept anything in between, such as
:INITIA
.)
