Overview

This document describes the ALLEN + ROTH LAVAGLASS GAS FIREPLACE INSERT (MODEL # VFL-GI35D-20), an unvented gas-fired heater designed for supplemental heating. It uses natural gas and is equipped with an auto-start pulse ignition system.

Function Description

The gas fireplace insert is designed to provide supplemental heat and can be operated with the flue damper closed. It features an Oxygen Depletion Sensing (ODS) safety shut-off system, which automatically turns off the unit if there isn't enough fresh air or if the main burner flame goes out. The auto-start pulse ignition system, powered by one AAA battery, simplifies the lighting process. The unit uses clear glass rocks as media, which should completely cover the burner but keep the ignition screen clear for proper operation.

Important Technical Specifications

  • Floor Clearances:
    • If installed at floor level: Minimum 14 in. to combustibles.
    • If combustible materials are less than 14 in. to the fireplace: Install appliance at least 5 in. above combustible flooring.
  • Mantel Clearances:
    • Noncombustible material distance 8 in. or more: Noncombustible material okay.
    • Noncombustible material distance less than 8 in.: Noncombustible material must be extended to at least 8 in. (See between 8 in. and 12 in. above).

Usage Features

  • Supplemental Heating: Intended for use as supplemental heat, not as a primary heat source.
  • Vent-Free Operation: Designed for vent-free operation, although local and state codes may prohibit this in some areas.
  • Safety Pilot: Equipped with an ODS system to ensure safety by shutting off gas if oxygen levels are low or the flame extinguishes.
  • Natural Gas Only: This appliance is designed exclusively for natural gas and is not convertible for other gas types.
  • Glass Rocks: Uses clear glass rocks as media. It is crucial to ensure the glass rocks are completely dry before lighting to prevent cracking. Only GHP Group Inc. factory-authorized glass rocks should be used (maximum 9.9 lbs/4.49 kgs). Do not mix different sizes or types of rocks (e.g., lava rocks).
  • Clearances: Strict adherence to minimum clearances from combustible materials (floor, ceiling, side walls, and mantels) is required for safe operation.
  • Ventilation: Adequate combustion and ventilation air must be provided, especially in confined or unusually tight spaces. The manual provides a worksheet to determine if a space is confined or unconfined and outlines methods for providing fresh air from inside the building or outdoors.
  • Gas Connection: Requires connection to a natural gas supply by a qualified service technician, including an external regulator and a sediment trap in the supply line. Gas connections must be checked for leaks after installation or servicing using a liquid soap and water mixture.
  • Lighting Instructions: A detailed procedure for lighting the pilot using the electronic ignitor is provided, emphasizing safety steps such as checking for gas odors and waiting periods.
  • Shutting Off: Instructions are given for completely turning off the gas supply to the appliance or just shutting off the burner while keeping the pilot lit.
  • Flame Patterns: The manual includes diagrams and descriptions for correct and incorrect pilot and burner flame patterns, aiding in troubleshooting.

Maintenance Features

  • Regular Inspection: Burners, pilot, and primary air inlet holes should be inspected frequently for dust and dirt.
  • Cleaning:
    • Burner and Pilot Assembly: Clean with compressed air (no greater than 30 PSI) to remove dust, dirt, lint, and pet hair from ports, slots, and air inlet holes. This should be done prior to each heating season and every three months during operation.
    • Glass Rocks: If removed for cleaning, refer to the placement instructions.
    • Air Passageways: Use a vacuum cleaner or pressurized air to clean.
    • Exterior: Wipe with a soft cloth dampened with a mild soap and water mixture.
  • Professional Service: The appliance should be inspected by a professional service person before use and at least annually. More frequent cleaning may be required in environments with excessive lint from carpeting, bedding, or pet hair.
  • Chimney Cleaning: Before installing in a solid-fuel burning fireplace, the chimney flue and firebox must be cleaned of soot, creosote, ashes, and loose paint by a qualified chimney cleaner.
  • Gas Leaks: All gas piping and connections must be tested for leaks after installation or servicing, and any leaks must be corrected immediately.
  • Battery Replacement: The AAA battery for the auto-start pulse ignition system should be replaced when depleted, observing proper polarity. Batteries should be removed during long periods of non-operation.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: A comprehensive troubleshooting section helps diagnose common issues such as pilot not staying lit, no spark, burner not lighting, abnormal flame patterns, and odors, providing possible causes and corrective actions.
