Doris - Moving up the bed, two
people, pulling
Use of a profiling bed can prevent a patient
from
slipping down towards the foot end. However,
if
such a bed is not available the following
technique
can be used to slide the patient back towards
the
head
end
This technique may be used where the bed is at
a
low height, hence a pulling action is desirable.
The
patient is unable to assist with the
movement.
The MaxiSlide sheets and tube have been fitted
beneath the patient to remove any 'shearing'
effects
of the
movement.
Each carer stands either side of the bed and
holds
the top MaxiSlide with the closest hand to
the
bed.
Ensuring good communication the carers
move
simultaneously and slowly backwards to the
head
of the
bed.
Emma - Lateral transfer onto trolley
Two MaxiSlide sheets are fitted using
the
‘unravelling’ method. Use a Maxitube under
the
patient's feet if
necessary.
Note: It is vital that you ensure
that
the trolley and the bed are
of
approximately equal height. It
will
however assist with the manoeuvre if
the
surface the patient is being
transferred
onto is slightly lower than the
bed.
Ensure the bed and trolley castors
are
solidly
locked.
Four Pull Straps are fitted to the top MaxiSlide,
at
shoulders, hip and feet. The Pull Straps prevent
the
carers from having to over
reach.
The trolley is brought into
place.
Warning: Care must be taken that
the
pulling action is not carried out
too
quickly as this may result in injury to
the
patient.
While the third carer rolls or tilts the
patient
towards
him the two carers place a ‘pat slide’ on
the
bed and
slide it underneath the MaxiSlide
sheets.
