Overview

The UNION 8755A DoorSense is a standalone, battery-powered door release mechanism designed to keep doors open and automatically release them upon the sound of a fire alarm. It is suitable for continuous traffic applications and can be retrofitted to doors with older release mechanisms.

Function Description:

DoorSense holds a door open and releases it automatically when a continuous sound of over 65dB is detected for at least 15 seconds, indicating a fire alarm. It can be activated manually using a foot pedal or by gently pushing the door open wider. An optional pre-set timer release allows for automatic door closure at specified times. The device incorporates an internal clock that governs the release timer and self-testing features.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Power Source: 2 x C-Type alkaline batteries (rechargeable batteries are not supported).
  • Sound Detection: Reacts to continuous sound over 65dB for at least 15 seconds.
  • Installation Requirements:
    • Door must have a correctly working door closer.
    • Floor beneath the door's sweep must be level.
    • Gap between the bottom of the door and the floor must be at least 5mm (3/16").
    • Door must open to an angle of more than 65°.
    • Building must have a clearly audible fire alarm system where the door is fitted.
  • Operating Modes:
    • Hold Open: Door is held open by the stopper engaging with the floorplate.
    • Manual Release: Tap the foot pedal towards the door face or gently push the door further open.
    • Sound Driven Release: Releases within 20 seconds of detecting a fire alarm sound.
    • Timer Release: Configurable automatic release at pre-set times (e.g., 8pm, 9pm, 10pm).
  • Alerts and Indicators:
    • Warning Light: 3-colour LED (Green, Yellow, Red) for status indication.
    • Sound Alerts: Warning tones for timer release, faults, and low battery.
    • LED Flash Patterns:
      • Green flash every 32 seconds: DoorSense working OK and "listening" for an alarm.
      • Green flash every 1.3 seconds (when sound between 65dB and 80dB): Increased flash frequency indicates sound detection.
      • Long tone at power-up: Indicates start of power-up test.
      • Green light, 4 seconds, then 15 seconds: DoorSense beginning power-up test.
      • Green light, 32 seconds, then 1 flash: DoorSense working OK and "listening" for an alarm.
      • Green light, slow flash, 20 seconds: DoorSense is about to release the foot pedal for timed release.
      • Green light, 10 seconds: DoorSense unit is re-setting after release.
      • Yellow light, fast flash, 40 seconds: Batteries draining, fast red flash for 5 seconds.
      • Red light, 5 seconds: Battery compartment not shut properly.
      • Yellow light, fast flash, 60 seconds: DoorSense motor not working (possible fault).
      • Green light, slow flash, 30 seconds: Foot pedal movement concern.
      • Yellow light, slow flash, 10 seconds: No dip switch has been selected.
      • Yellow light, 1 flash, 60 seconds: Night time mode.
  • Sensitivity Adjustment: Adjustable sound sensor sensitivity using a provided plastic tool. Clockwise to increase, anti-clockwise to decrease.

Usage Features:

  • Easy Installation: No wiring or specialist skills required; uses a provided fixing template.
  • Foot Pedal Operation: Press down to hold the door open, tap or push the door to release.
  • Optional Timer Release: Configurable settings for automatic door release at specific times (e.g., 8pm, 9pm, 10pm) or no timer. The internal clock resets if batteries are removed, so it's recommended to insert batteries at 12:00pm (noon) for accurate timing.
  • Programmed Test Releases: Automatically releases 12 hours after battery insertion (clock reset) and then every 7 days. If a fault is detected during a test, a warning tone sounds, and DoorSense enters fail-safe mode (foot pedal won't stay pressed).
  • Sound Driven Release: Detects fire alarms and releases the door automatically.
  • Sensitivity Adjustment: Allows tuning the device's responsiveness to ambient sounds and fire alarms to suit the specific location.
  • Floorplate Options: Includes a floorplate with a door stop (to protect walls) and a flat floorplate without a stop (for open spaces).

Maintenance Features:

  • Weekly Checks:
    • Ensure the DoorSense unit continues to hold the door open.
    • Verify it hears and reacts to the fire alarm sounding for at least 20 seconds.
    • If not working as expected, refer to the DoorSense Alerts section.
  • Monthly Checks:
    • Check microphone holes on the curved face of the unit for dirt and debris.
    • Wipe with a damp cloth to keep the microphone clear and the unit clean.
    • Regularly check that the DoorSense unit and floor plates are damage-free and securely screwed to the door and floor.
    • Consider replacing the unit if any damage is found.
  • Annually:
    • Replace batteries once a year or when the low battery alarm sounds (indicated by a yellow light, fast flash for 40 seconds, followed by a red flash for 5 seconds).
  • Battery Maintenance Record: A table is provided in the manual to record battery replacement dates.
  • DoorSense Maintenance Record: Tables are provided to record annual inspection dates, unit condition, and inspector details.
  • DoorSense Installation Record: A section to document installation details, including company name, installation date, door location, building address, installer name, company, address, and telephone.
