Overview

The Atlantic VERTIGO electric water heater is designed for indoor installation and features an enamelled steel tank, ensuring durability and efficient water heating. This documentation provides essential information for its installation, operation, and maintenance, specifically for horizontal installations where the hot and cold water outlets must be at the side.

Function Description

The VERTIGO electric water heater is designed to provide hot water for various domestic needs, including kitchen, laundry, and bathroom use. It operates by heating water stored in its enamelled steel tank using an electric heating element. The device offers multiple operating modes to optimize energy consumption and user comfort.

The core function of the water heater is to heat and store water at a user-selected temperature or automatically adjust based on usage patterns. It incorporates a PTR (Pressure Temperature Relief) valve and a Pressure Limiting Valve to ensure safe operation by managing internal pressure and temperature. The system includes both hot and cold water connections, with specific requirements for the installation of non-return and isolating valves, as well as a line strainer, to maintain water quality and system integrity.

The water heater is equipped with a digital screen and a mode selection knob, allowing users to choose from various operating modes:

  • FROST FREE Mode: This mode automatically regulates the temperature to 7°C, reducing electricity consumption during periods when the user is absent, thereby preventing the water from freezing.
  • MANUAL Mode: In this mode, the user can manually select a hot water temperature up to 70°C. Users should be aware that this mode may increase electrical consumption.
  • SMART Mode: This is a fully automatic operation mode. After a learning period, the water heater intelligently adjusts the hot water temperature to match the user's consumption patterns, aiming to lower electrical consumption.
  • BOOST Mode: This soft-touch button activates fast heating of the appliance. The BOOST mode automatically deactivates once a full supply of hot water is available. It is important to note that the BOOST mode is not available on the FLAT 30 model.

A shower display indicates the quantity of hot water available, and a blinking shower symbol signifies that hot water is currently being produced (heating in progress). A power indicator light illuminates when the water heater is connected to the power supply.

Usage Features

Before initial use, it is crucial to fill the tank completely. This involves opening the hot water taps to bleed air from the pipes and then filling the appliance with water. Once filled, the tightness of all tubes and the flange seal under the plastic cover should be checked. Any leaks should be moderately tightened. The operation of the hydraulic components and the safety valve must also be verified.

Upon powering on, water may drip from the drain after 15 to 30 minutes, depending on the device's capacity. This is a normal occurrence due to water expansion during heating. Connection leaks and seals should be checked again. During heating, and depending on water quality, the hot water tanks may produce a bubbling noise, which is normal and does not indicate a defect.

The water heater is designed for indoor installation only and must be fixed to the ground using the provided attachments, complying with relevant building codes and seismic restraint requirements. Adequate clearance must be maintained around the unit for service and replacement of components such as cold water inlet piping devices, the PTR valve, tempering valves (if fitted), elements, and thermostats. The PTR valve requires approximately 150 mm for withdrawal.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is essential to ensure the longevity and safe operation of the Atlantic VERTIGO water heater.

User Maintenance:

  • PTR Valve Operation: The Pressure Temperature Relief (PTR) valve should be operated once a month to prevent scaling and verify that it is not blocked. Failure to do so can cause damage and invalidate the warranty. When operating the valve, care should be taken to prevent the lever from snapping back, which could damage the valve seat.
  • Flushing and Draining: To flush sediment or drain the water heater, first switch off the power and the cold water supply. Open the hot water faucets and manipulate the safety valve. The pressure in the water heater will be released. Disconnect the union at the cold water inlet and attach a hose from the water heater side to a drain. Opening the PTR valve allows air into the water heater, facilitating drainage. After draining, close the PTR valve carefully, reconnect the cold water inlet, and open the cold water stop valve to refill and flush the cylinder. Finally, close the hot taps and restore power.
  • Leak Checks: Regularly check that all joints and seals are watertight.

Maintenance by a Qualified Person:

  • Scale Sludge Removal: A qualified person should remove scale sludge. It is important not to scrape or chip at lime scale deposited on the casing, as this can damage the lining.
  • Magnesium Anode Replacement: The magnesium anode should be changed every 2 years or when its diameter is less than 10 mm. This procedure requires draining the water heater and replacing the seal.
  • Heating Element Replacement: If the heating element needs replacement, the water heater must be drained, and the seal changed.
  • Supply Cord Replacement: If the supply cord is damaged, it must be replaced by a special cord or assembly available from the manufacturer or an approved service agent.
  • Thermal Cut-out: The water heater is equipped with a thermal cut-out that shuts off power if it overheats. If the circuit breaker repeatedly trips, the power should be switched off, the cover removed, and electrical connections checked. If the cut-out continues to trip, the thermostat must be replaced by an authorized agent. It is critical never to bypass the safety device or thermostat. The operation of the thermal cut-out indicates a potentially dangerous situation, and it should not be reset until the water heater has been serviced by a qualified person.

The use of genuine manufacturer's parts is required for warranty purposes when replacing components such as the thermostat, seals, heating element, boiler shell, indicator light, magnesium anode, and connection cable.
