266 Emergency situat ions
Emergency situations
General
This chapter is intended for trained emer-
gency crews and working personnel who
have the necessary tools and equ ipment to
perform these operations.
Starting by pushing or
towing
Q;) Note
Vehicles with an automati c transmission
cannot be started by pushing or towing .
Starting with jumper
cables
If necessary, the engine can be started by
connecting it to the battery of another vehi-
cle.
If the engine should fail to start because of a
discha rged or wea k batte ry, the battery can be
connected to the battery of
another veh icle,
using a pair of jumper cables to start the en-
gine .
Jumper cables
Use only jumper cab les of sufficiently
largecross section to carry the starter cur rent
safely. Refer to the manufact urer's spec ifica-
tions.
Use on ly jumper cables with
insulated te rmi-
na l clamps wh ich are d istinctly mar ked :
plus (+) cable in most cases colore d red
minu s (-) cable
in most cases colored black.
A WARNING
Batt e ries cont ain e lect ricity, acid, a nd gas.
Any of t he se can cause very ser ious or fata l
inj ury. Follow t he inst ruct ions below f or
safe ha ndli ng of your ve hicle's bat t ery.
- Always shield your eye s and avoid lean -
ing over t he bat te ry whenever possib le.
- A discharged battery can freeze at tem-
pe rat ures just below 32 °F (0 °C). Before
connecting a ju mper cable, you must
thaw the frozen battery complete ly, ot h-
e rwise it cou ld explode.
- Do not allow batte ry acid to contact eyes
or skin . Flus h a ny contacted area wit h
wate r im media te ly.
- Imp roper use of a booster battery to
st art a vehicle may cause an explosion.
- Vehicle batter ies generate explosive gas-
es . Keep sparks, flame and lighted ciga-
rettes away from ba tte ries .
- Do not try to jump start a ny ve hicle with
a low ac id leve l in the battery .
- The voltage of the booster batte ry m ust
a lso have a 12-Volt rat ing . The capacity
(Ah) of the booster batte ry should not be
lowe r than that of the discharged bat-
tery . Use of batt e ries of d iffe ren t voltage
or subs t anti ally diffe rent "Ah" rat ing
may cause an exp losion and person al in-
ju ry.
- Never charg e a frozen bat t e ry. Ga s t rap -
ped in t he ice may cause an explosion .
- Neve r charge o r use a batt e ry t hat has
been fro zen. The battery case may have
be weakened.
- Use of batt er ies of differe nt voltag e or
substan t ially differen t capa city (Ah) rat -
ing may cause an exp losion and injury.
The capac ity (Ah) of the booster battery
should not be lower than that of the dis-
charged batte ry.
- Before you check anything in the engine
compartment, always read and heed all

(D Note
- App lying a hig her voltage booste r bat-
tery will cause expens ive damage to sen-
sitive e lectronic components, such as
cont rol units, relays, rad io, etc.
- There must be no electrical contact be-
twee n the vehicles as otherwise current
could already start to f low as soon as t he
posi tive(+) t erminals are con nected . ..,.
