Engine oil specifications
The engine oil used in your Audi needs the
right kind of oil.

The engine in your Audi is a sophisticated
powerp lant that was built to exacting specifi -
cations . This engine needs the right kind of
engine oil that meets specificat ions regarding
quality and viscosity so that it can run
smoothly and reliably . Choosing the right oil
and changing oil within the time and mileage
interva ls printed in your vehicle's War ranty
&
Maintenance book let matters a lot more to-
day than it did years ago. Audi has developed
a special qu ality st andard fo r engine oil th at
will help assure that your vehicle's engine will
get the lubrication it needs for prope r opera -
tion .
Modern engine lubricat ion has t aken a quan-
tum leap in the last few years. Many synthetic
oils available today provide better engine lu-
brication that can outlast traditional petrole-
um-based oils, making them a smart choice
for use throughout the life of your Audi.
Checkin g and fillin g 231
Whether you use synthetic or petro leum-
based engine oil, the oil that you use must
conform to Aud i's oi l quality standard
VW 502 00 (vehicles with gasoline engine) or
VW 507 00 (vehicles wit h diesel engine) to
help keep your vehicle's engine ru nning
smoot hly and help prevent the format ion of
harmful deposits, sometimes call ed "s ludge,"
t hat over t ime can lead to expensive repairs.
At the time of printing, engine oils available in
t he U.S. and Canada that meet the exact ing
specifications of Audi oil standard VW 502 00
(vehicles w ith gasoline engine) or VW 507 00
(vehicles w ith diesel engi ne) are synthet ic en-
gine oils. This does not mean, however, t hat
every synthetic engine oil will meet Audi oi l
standard VW 502 00 (vehicles with gasoline
engine) or VW 507 00 (vehicles with diesel
engine). So always be sure that you use an ap-
proved oil.
To help prevent the formation of harmfu l de-
posits use on ly oil with the following specifi-
cations pr inted on the oil conta iner:
- Audi oil standard VW 502 00 (gasoline en-
gine)
- Audi oil standard VW 507 00 (diesel en-
gine)
Oil containe r labels may carry t he specifi ca-
tion sing ly or in combination wi t h other desig-
nations and oil quality st andards.
Viscosity
Engine oils are graded according to their vis-
cosity. The proper viscosity grade oil fo r your
engine depends on climactic or seasonal con-
ditions where you drive. You can use oil wit h a
viscosity gr ade of SAE SW40 across all tem -
perat ure ranges for norma l driv ing conditions.
However, if engine oil viscosity grade SAE
SW40 is not available, you can also use viscos-
ity grade SAE SW-30 or SAE OW-40 as long as
it meets Aud i oil quality standard VW 502 00
(vehicles w ith gasoline engine) or VW 507 00
(vehicles w ith diesel engine) specifications.
Because engine oil t hat meet s the Audi oil
standard may not be availab le everywhere
