Engine oil consumption
The engine in your vehicle depends on an ade-
quate amount of oil to lubricate and cool all
of its m oving parts .
In order to provide effective lubrication and
cooling of internal engine components, all in-
ternal combustion eng ines consume a certain
amo unt of oil. Oil consumption varies from
engine to eng ine and may change significant ly
over the life of the eng ine . Typically, eng ines
with a specified break-in period (see
¢
page 205) consume more oil during the
break-in period than they consume after oil
consumption has stabilized.
Under norma l conditions, the rat e of oil con-
sumption depends on the quality and viscosity
of the oil, the RPM (revolutions per minute) at
which the eng ine is operated, the ambient
temperature and road condit ions. Further fac-
tors are t he amount of oil dilution from wate r
condensation or fuel residue and the oxida-
tion level of the oil. As any engine is subject to
wear as mileage builds up, the oil consump-
tion may increase over t ime until replacement
of worn componen ts may become necessa ry.
With all these variables coming int o play, no
standa rd rate of oil consumption can be es-
tablished or specified . There is no alterna tive
to regular and freq uent checking of the oil lev-
el, see
Note .
If the yellow eng ine oil level warning symbol
in the instr umen t cluster
II light s up, you
should check t he oil level as soon as possible
¢
page 233 or ¢ page 234. Top off t he oil at
your ea rliest convenience ¢

A WARNING
Before you check anything in the engine
compartment, always read and heed all
WARNINGS
¢ .&. in Working in the engine
compartment on page 228.
Driving with an insufficient oil level is like-
ly to cause severe damage to the eng ine.

Checkin g and fillin g
(D Tips
- The oil pressure warning display. is
not an indicator of the oil level. Do not
rely on it. Instead, check the oil level in
your engine at regular intervals, pref-
erably each time you refuel, and always
before going on a long trip.
- If you have the impressi on your engi ne
consumes excessive amounts of oil, we
recommend that you consult your Audi
dea ler to have the cause of your concer n
properly diagno sed . Keep in mind th at
t he accurate meas urement of oil con-
sumption requires great care and may
take some t ime . Your Audi dea ler has in-
struct ions about how to measure oil con-
sumption accurate ly.
Checking the engine oil level
Applies to vehicles : wit h oil level indicator
Fig. 201 Disp lay: oil leve l indicator
.,. Park your vehicle on a level surface.
.,. Shut the eng ine off when it is warm.
.,. Switch only the ignition back on.
.,. Wait app roximately two minutes .
.,. Select:
!CAR! functio n button > Car systems
cont rol button > Servicing & checks > Oil
level.
.,. Check t he oil level in the display ¢ fig. 201.
Add eng ine oil if the bar of the oil level indi-
cato r is near "min"¢
page 234 .
Depending on the way the vehicle is driven
and the ope rat ing cond it ions, oil consumption
can be up to 1/2 quart per 600 miles (0.5 liter
per 1,000 km). Consumption may be higher
within the first 3,000 miles (5,000 km). ..,,.
