Overview

The Auto Meter Spek Pro Fuel Rail Pressure Gauge is a 2 1/16” intelligent electrical gauge designed for monitoring fuel rail pressure in vehicles. It is field programmable by the operator and features a stepper motor that drives the gauge pointer over a 280-degree sweep, offering a wide-angle dial with a 15% larger viewing area for superior visibility.

Function Description:

The primary function of this gauge is to display fuel rail pressure. It is equipped with programming capabilities that allow the user to customize various settings, including:

  • Normal/Dial Brightness: Adjusts the brightness of the dial lighting for day or evening driving conditions.
  • Peak Playback: Displays the highest pressure value recorded since the last reset. This value is held in memory until erased.
  • High Red-Line Setting: Sets a high warning threshold. If the sensor value exceeds this threshold during normal operation, a red "HI" indicator illuminates.
  • Low Threshold Setting: Sets a low warning threshold. If the sensor value drops below this threshold during normal operation, a yellow "LOW" indicator illuminates.
  • Color Scheme: Allows the operator to select the color of the gauge dial illumination from seven programmable colors (OFF, VIOLET, BLUE, GREEN, YELLOW, ORANGE, RED, WHITE).
  • Demo Mode: Displays the features of the meter, including pointer movement, dial color changes, and warning indicator lights (HI, LOW, PEAK).
  • Pointer Brightness Mode: Adjusts the brightness of the dial pointer to blend with original manufacturer's gauges or owner preferences.
  • Calibrate Gauge to Environment: Calibrates the gauge to the vehicle's environment with the engine off.
  • Restore Factory Default: Resets all user-programmed settings to their factory defaults.

Important Technical Specifications:

  • Gauge Type: Fuel Rail Pressure Gauge
  • Size: 2 1/16”
  • Power System: Designed for 12V DC electrical systems with a negative ground.
  • Output Control Module: Optional, with a maximum output of 1.5 Amps at 12 Volts DC. Exceeding this limit will void the warranty.
  • Factory Default Settings:
    • High Fuel Rail Pressure: 29,500 PSI
    • Low Fuel Rail Pressure: 12,000 PSI
  • Wiring: 12-pin wiring harness and plug. Key pins include:
    • PIN 12: Ground/Black
    • PIN 8: +12 VDC/Red
    • PIN 6: Dimmer/White
    • PIN 5: 1.9 Amp Fet Output/Purple
    • PIN 3: Ground/Black (Sensor Ground)
    • PIN 2: Pressure Input/Green/White
  • Fuse Requirement: A 3 AMP, fast-acting fuse is required for the +12V ignition circuit.
  • Patents: U.S. Patent# 7,278,749 and # 7,612,660, with additional patents pending.

Usage Features:

The gauge is programmed using three control buttons located on its face: "Down," "Mode" (center), and "Up."

  • Navigation: The "Down" and "Up" buttons move the pointer to a desired setting or control faceplate illumination. The "Mode" button saves settings and advances to the next programming level in the Main Menu.
  • Main Menu Access: Programming starts in the Main Menu mode by pressing the "Mode" button one at a time.
  • Submenu Access: Submenus are accessed from specific levels within the Main Menu by simultaneously pressing combinations of buttons for five seconds (e.g., "Mode" and "Up" or "Mode" and "Down").
  • Soft Reset: To reset the program to normal operation from any mode, simultaneously press the "Up" and "Down" buttons. This cancels information programmed in that mode only.
  • Error Indication: Programming errors are signaled by the faceplate lighting "PURPLE," "BLUE," "GREEN," then "ORANGE."
  • Timeout: If programming is inactive for 60 seconds, the mode will time out, and the gauge will return to normal operation, except in Demo Mode.
  • Sensor Connection Check: The gauge faceplate will flash alternately "RED" then "GREEN" if the sensor probe is not connected to the wiring harness.

Maintenance Features:

  • Installation: Requires careful attention to wiring, including disconnecting the negative battery terminal, proper fusing, and securing connections. Installation should be performed by an experienced automotive technician.
  • Troubleshooting: The manual provides guidance for common issues, such as the alternating "RED" and "GREEN" flash indicating a disconnected sensor probe or wiring harness.
  • Warnings:
    • Never disassemble, modify, or tamper with the product, as this voids the limited warranty.
    • Avoid wiring near engine, exhaust system, turbine, or other high-heat/vibration areas.
    • Use solderless connectors and insulate all electrical connections with electrical tape.
    • Do not adjust gauges or programs while driving.
    • Take precautions to protect fuel rail pressure sensor wiring to prevent short circuits and engine damage.
    • Be aware that disconnecting the battery terminal may result in loss of audio, clock, and other memory data, requiring a reset after installation.
    • Exercise extreme caution regarding fuel and fuel vapor during installation due to flammability.
