Overview

The Autonics BW Series is a range of single-beam area sensors designed for various industrial applications, offering reliable object detection and robust performance.

Function Description

The BW Series sensors operate on a through-beam sensing method, where an emitter sends an infrared LED (850 nm modulated light) beam to a receiver. When an opaque object interrupts this beam, the sensor detects its presence. These sensors are particularly useful for detecting objects across a defined area, minimizing non-detection zones with a 20 mm optical pitch (BW20 models). They feature a long sensing distance of up to 7 meters, making them suitable for a wide range of applications.

The series offers 22 configurations, varying in the number of optics (from 4 to 48) and optical pitch (20 mm or 40 mm), allowing for detection areas from 120 mm to 940 mm. Key functions include a mutual interference prevention function, which is crucial when multiple sensors are installed closely to avoid sensing errors. This is achieved through a MASTER/SLAVE connection where one sensor acts as a master and others as slaves, utilizing a synchronous line for coordinated operation.

The sensors also incorporate a self-diagnosis function that monitors for malfunctions during normal operation. If a malfunction is detected, the control output turns OFF, and the operation indicator displays the specific state. An "Emitter OFF" function allows external systems to check sensor operation by forcibly stopping light emission, which can be used for testing or system diagnostics. Additionally, an "Optical axis misalignment alarm" provides an early warning when the front screen is contaminated, the optical axis is misaligned, or the emitter is damaged, by changing the control output and activating specific LED indicators.

Usage Features

  • Easy Installation: The sensors are designed for straightforward installation, with specific guidelines for direction, reflection from surfaces, and interference protection. An "Installation Mode" simplifies initial setup by guiding the user to position the unit correctly until the green LED of the receiver operation indicator turns ON.
  • Flexible Configurations: With 22 different models, users can select the most appropriate sensor based on the required number of optical axes, optical pitch, and detection area, ranging from 120 mm to 940 mm.
  • Bright LED Indicators: Emitter and receiver units are equipped with bright LED indicators (green, red, yellow) that provide clear visual feedback on the sensor's operational status, including stable light ON/OFF, unstable light ON/OFF, and various error conditions.
  • Environmental Robustness: The BW Series is built to withstand challenging industrial environments, featuring an IP65 protection rating, high ambient illuminance tolerance (100,000 lux), and resistance to vibration, shock, and a wide range of temperatures and humidity.
  • Safety Considerations: The manual emphasizes critical safety precautions, including the necessity of fail-safe devices for machinery that could cause serious injury or economic loss. It warns against use in hazardous environments (flammable/explosive gas, high humidity, etc.) and stresses the importance of proper wiring and avoiding disassembly or modification.

Maintenance Features

  • Self-Diagnosis: The integrated self-diagnosis function continuously monitors the sensor for malfunctions such as a break in the emitting element, emitter failure (time out), or issues with the synchronous line. This proactive monitoring helps in identifying and addressing problems early.
  • Optical Axis Misalignment Alarm: This feature acts as a maintenance alert, signaling when the optical axis is misaligned due to factors like dust accumulation on the front screen, vibration, or emitter damage. This allows for timely cleaning or adjustment, preventing potential detection failures.
  • Cleaning: The manual specifies using a dry cloth for cleaning the unit, explicitly prohibiting water or organic solvents to prevent damage or fire.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: A comprehensive troubleshooting section is provided, detailing common malfunctions (e.g., non-operation, control output issues, LED display errors) and their probable causes, along with recommended solutions. This guide assists users in quickly diagnosing and resolving issues, often without needing to contact customer service.
  • Connection Checks: For issues like non-operation or synchronous line malfunctions, the guide advises checking wiring connections, ensuring proper power supply, and verifying the integrity of assembled connector parts.
  • Environmental Checks: Recommendations include removing dirt from sensor covers, ensuring the unit is within its rated sensing distance, and relocating the sensor away from strong electric waves or noise generators if interference is suspected.
