Overview

BX Series: Terminal Type and Long Sensing Distance Photoelectric Sensors

The Autonics BX Series offers a range of photoelectric sensors designed for reliable object detection in various industrial applications. These sensors are available in both terminal type and long sensing distance configurations, providing flexibility for different installation and operational requirements. The series incorporates a variety of features aimed at enhancing performance, ease of use, and durability.

Function Description

The BX Series sensors are primarily designed for object detection using light-based principles. They come in three main sensing types: through-beam, retroreflective, and diffuse reflective, each suited for specific detection scenarios.

Through-beam type (BX15M-TFR, BX15M-TDT): This configuration consists of a separate emitter and receiver unit. The emitter sends a beam of light, and the receiver detects it. When an object interrupts the beam, the sensor triggers an output. This type is ideal for long sensing distances and applications where precise detection of opaque objects is required. The BX15M-TFR and BX15M-TDT models offer a sensing distance of 15m, detecting opaque materials with a minimum diameter of Ø15mm.

Retroreflective type (BX5M-MFR, BX5M-MDT, BX3M-PFR, BX3M-PDT): Retroreflective sensors combine the emitter and receiver in a single housing and require a separate reflector. The sensor emits light, which is then reflected back by the reflector to the receiver. An object passing between the sensor and the reflector interrupts the beam, triggering the output.

  • Standard retroreflective (BX5M-MFR, BX5M-MDT): These models offer a sensing distance ranging from 0.1m to 5m when used with an MS-2 reflector (or MS-4, which is sold separately and allows detection under 0.1m). They are suitable for detecting opaque materials with a minimum diameter of Ø60mm.
  • Retroreflective with built-in polarizing filter (BX3M-PFR, BX3M-PDT): These models are designed to minimize false detections caused by reflective targets. The polarizing filter ensures that only light reflected from the dedicated reflector (which typically has a retroreflective material that rotates the polarization of light) is detected, while reflections from shiny objects are filtered out. They offer a sensing distance from 0.1m to 3m when used with an MS-3 reflector (or MS-2, which allows detection from 0.1m to 2m and under 0.1m).

Diffuse reflective type (BX700-DFR, BX700-DDT): Diffuse reflective sensors also house the emitter and receiver in a single unit but do not require a separate reflector. They detect objects by sensing the light reflected directly from the object's surface. These sensors are suitable for detecting translucent or opaque materials. The BX700-DFR and BX700-DDT models have a sensing distance of 700mm, optimized for non-glossy white paper (200x200mm) as a standard target. The detection range can vary based on the target's size, surface, and gloss.

All BX Series sensors include a built-in sensitivity adjustment VR (Variable Resistor), allowing users to fine-tune the detection threshold for optimal performance in specific environments or with different target materials.

A key functional enhancement across the series is the timer function, available in models with a "-T" suffix (e.g., BX15M-TFR-T, BX5M-MFR-T). This function provides three selectable modes:

  • ON Delay: The output is delayed for a set time after the detection condition is met.
  • OFF Delay: The output remains active for a set time after the detection condition is no longer met.
  • One-shot Delay: The output activates for a fixed duration after detection, regardless of how long the object remains in the sensing area. The delay time is adjustable from 0.1 to 5 seconds via a slide switch and a VR.

The control output options vary based on the power type.

  • Free power type (Relay contact output): Models like BX15M-TFR, BX5M-MFR, BX3M-PFR, and BX700-DFR provide a relay contact output (1c composition) with a capacity of 30VDC 3A or 250VAC 3A at resistive load. This allows for direct control of higher power loads.
  • DC power type (NPN/PNP open collector simultaneous output): Models like BX15M-TDT, BX5M-MDT, BX3M-PDT, and BX700-DDT offer NPN and PNP open collector transistor outputs simultaneously. These outputs are suitable for direct connection to PLCs or other low-power control circuits, with a maximum load current of 200mA. These models also feature output protection devices, which turn off the control output if short-circuit or overcurrent conditions exist, ensuring device longevity.

The operation mode (Light ON or Dark ON) is selectable via a switch, providing flexibility in how the sensor responds to object detection. In Light ON mode, the output activates when light is received (or blocked in through-beam), while in Dark ON mode, the output activates when light is not received (or detected in through-beam).

Usage Features

The BX Series is designed with several features to simplify installation, operation, and troubleshooting.

Wide Power Supply Range: The free power type models support a universal power supply range of 24-240VAC/24-240VDC (±10%), making them highly versatile and compatible with various power systems without requiring specific power supply units. The DC power type models operate on 12-24VDC (±10%).

Self-diagnosis Function: A green LED indicator provides self-diagnosis, turning ON when the sensor is in a stable operating condition. This feature allows for quick visual confirmation of proper sensor function and helps in identifying potential issues.

Operation Indicators:

  • Yellow LED: Indicates the operation status (output ON/OFF).
  • Green LED: Indicates the self-diagnosis status (stable operation). These indicators provide immediate visual feedback on the sensor's state, aiding in setup and monitoring.

Mounting and Sensitivity Adjustment:

  • Through-beam type: Installation involves aligning the emitter and receiver, then adjusting their positions (right/left, up/down) until the receiver is centered within the operation range, indicated by the yellow LED. Stability is confirmed by placing the object at the optical axis.
  • Retroreflective type: The sensor and reflector (MS-2 or MS-3) are faced opposite each other. The sensor's position is adjusted until the operation indicator turns ON, and then both units are fixed. For applications with multiple sensors, a minimum spacing of 30cm between units is recommended to prevent interference. If the target is highly reflective, it's advised to either increase the distance between the target and the sensor or install the sensor at an angle of 30° to 45° to the optical axis. The polarizing filter models (BX3M-PFR/PDT) are particularly useful in such scenarios to prevent false detections from shiny surfaces.
  • Diffuse reflective type: Sensitivity adjustment is crucial. The target is placed at the desired detection point, and the sensitivity VR is adjusted until the yellow LED turns ON and the green LED turns OFF. The target is then removed, and the VR is adjusted until the yellow LED turns OFF and the green LED turns ON. The optimal setting is typically the center point between these two switching positions. This precise adjustment ensures reliable detection for specific target characteristics.

Cable Connections: The terminal type design allows for easy and secure wiring. The manual provides clear diagrams for connecting wires to the terminal block, emphasizing the importance of proper torque for screws (0.8N·m) and cable holder (1.0 to 1.5N·m) to ensure waterproof integrity (using round wires with a diameter of Ø6 to 10mm).

Compact Design: The sensors and their accessories (reflectors MS-2, MS-3, MS-4) are designed to be compact, facilitating installation in confined spaces. The MS-4 reflector, for instance, is recommended for mounting places that are too narrow for MS-2.

Maintenance Features

The BX Series is built for durability and long-term reliability in industrial environments.

Robust Protection Structure: All models boast an IP66 protection structure (IEC standard), indicating high resistance to dust ingress and powerful water jets. This makes them suitable for use in harsh industrial environments where exposure to dust, moisture, or washdowns is common.

High Durability:

  • Relay Life Cycle: For relay output models, the mechanical life cycle is a minimum of 50,000,000 operations, and the electrical life cycle is a minimum of 100,000 operations, ensuring extended operational longevity.
  • Vibration Resistance: The sensors are designed to withstand significant vibration, with an amplitude of 1.5mm or 300m/s² at frequencies from 10 to 55Hz for 2 hours (mechanical) and 10 minutes (malfunction) in each of the X, Y, Z directions.
  • Shock Resistance: They can endure shocks up to 500m/s² (approx. 50G) for 3 times (mechanical) and 100m/s² (approx. 10G) for 3 times (malfunction) in each of the X, Y, Z directions. These specifications highlight the sensors' ability to maintain performance under mechanical stress.

Environmental Tolerance:

  • Ambient Illumination: The sensors can operate reliably in ambient light conditions up to 11,000lx (sunlight) and 3,000lx (incandescent lamp) for the receiver illumination, ensuring consistent performance even in varying lighting.
  • Temperature Range: They are designed for an ambient temperature range of -20 to 55°C (operation) and -25 to 70°C (storage), accommodating a wide range of industrial climates.
  • Humidity Range: The ambient humidity range is 35 to 85%RH for both operation and storage, indicating resilience to typical industrial humidity levels without freezing or condensation.

Noise Resistance: The sensors are equipped with noise resistance of ±1,000V (square wave, pulse width: 1µs) from a noise simulator, minimizing interference from electrical noise common in industrial settings.

Dielectric Strength and Insulation Resistance: A dielectric strength of 1500VAC 50/60Hz for 1 minute and insulation resistance of minimum 20MΩ (at 500VDC megger) ensure electrical safety and prevent leakage currents. The "Double or strong insulation" mark indicates enhanced electrical isolation.

Material Durability: The case and lens cover are made of PC (Polycarbonate), and the sensing part is also PC, materials known for their durability and resistance to environmental factors.

The Autonics BX Series provides a comprehensive solution for photoelectric sensing, combining advanced detection capabilities with robust construction and user-friendly features for reliable performance in diverse industrial applications.
