Overview

This document serves as the user manual for Avantco Commercial Refrigerators, specifically covering Refrigerated Pizza Prep Units (models 178APPT71HC, 178APPT49HC, 178APPT91HC) and Refrigerated Sandwich Prep Units (models 178APT27HC, 178APT27MHC, 178APT48HC, 178APT48MHC, 178APT60HC, 178APT60MHC, 178APT71HC, 178APT71MHC). The manual provides essential information for the proper setup, operation, and maintenance of these commercial refrigeration units.

Function Description:

Avantco Commercial Refrigerators are designed to maintain optimal temperatures for food safety, making them suitable for use in professional kitchens. These units are factory-set to cycle between a minimum temperature of 33 degrees Fahrenheit and a maximum of 40 degrees Fahrenheit. The primary function is to keep food products, such as pizza ingredients or sandwich components, chilled and fresh. The units feature a refrigeration system that includes a compressor, evaporator coils, and fan blades to circulate cold air. They are equipped with automatic defrost cycles to prevent ice buildup on the evaporator coils, ensuring consistent cooling performance. The design of these prep units includes a top section for holding food pans, which can be configured in various layouts depending on the model, accommodating different sizes and quantities of ingredients. Insulated lid covers are provided for the food pans to maximize food freshness during non-use periods.

Usage Features:

Before initial use, several installation guidelines must be followed to ensure optimal performance and prevent warranty voidance. If shelves have a raised lip, they must be installed facing up towards the rear of the cabinet to promote proper airflow. If the unit has been transported on its side, it should remain stationary for a minimum of 24 hours before being plugged in. It is crucial to allow the unit to reach its desired temperature before loading it with products. Proper ventilation around the unit is essential, with a recommended clearance of 4 inches on the back and 3 inches around all louvered or vented panels. Brackets are included to prevent the unit from being pushed against a wall. The unit should be installed on strong, level surfaces in an indoor, well-ventilated area, away from high humidity, dusty environments, and heat/moisture-generating equipment. High ambient temperatures (over 80 degrees Fahrenheit with the lid open, or over 90 degrees Fahrenheit generally) can cause the compressor to overwork and lead to malfunction.

The units are equipped with digital temperature controls. The display shows the current minimum temperature, and users can adjust this setting using arrow buttons after holding the "SET" button for one second. Pressing "SET" again saves the new setting. It's important to consider the temperature differential, as the cabinet temperature will fluctuate up to +7 degrees over the set minimum temperature as the compressor cycles. Setting the temperature too high can result in unsafe maximum temperatures for food.

Loading products requires attention to detail. All shelf clips must be securely fastened, and shelves should be level. To maintain correct airflow, a space of two to four inches should be left between the back wall and stored products. Blocking the evaporator fans can lead to warmer cabinet temperatures and potential compressor failure. Pizza and sandwich prep units are designed to function with all food pans in place, even if some are empty. For maximum freshness, pans should only be filled with an amount of food that can be used within a specific usage period. Insulated lid covers should be closed during non-use.

The unit is pre-programmed for automatic defrost cycles. However, a manual defrost cycle can be initiated by pressing the defrost button (snowflake symbol and down arrow) for approximately 3 seconds. The same action can be used to stop the defrost cycle.

Maintenance Features:

Regular maintenance is crucial for the efficient operation and longevity of the Avantco Commercial Refrigerators. Before performing any cleaning or maintenance, the power cord must be disconnected to prevent electrical shock.

Cleaning the Condenser Coil: For efficient operation, the condenser surface must be kept free of dust, dirt, and lint. It is recommended to clean the condenser coil and fins at least once per month using a commercial condenser coil cleaner. The condenser fins should be brushed from top to bottom, not side to side. After cleaning, any bent fins should be straightened with a fin comb. Malfunction due to a dirty condenser will void the warranty.

Cleaning the Fan Blades and Motor: If necessary, the fan blades and motor should be cleaned with a soft cloth. If washing the fan blades is required, the fan motor must be covered to prevent moisture damage.

Cleaning the Interior of the Unit: The cabinet interior should be cleaned using a solution of warm water and mild soap. Abrasive cleaners, steel wool, caustic soap, or bleach should not be used, as they can damage the stainless steel surface. Door gaskets should be washed regularly, preferably weekly. To clean, simply remove the gasket from the door frame, soak it in warm water and soap for thirty minutes, dry it with a soft cloth, and then replace it. After replacement, check that the door gaskets provide a proper seal. Shelves and pilasters should be periodically removed from the unit and cleaned with mild soap and warm water. To remove pilasters, first remove the shelves and shelf brackets, then lift the pilaster up and out.

Troubleshooting: The manual includes a troubleshooting section to address common issues such as the compressor not running, condensing units running for long periods, or the cabinet temperature being too warm. Solutions range from checking power connections and thermostat settings to cleaning the condenser coil and ensuring proper door sealing.

Safety Warnings: The manual emphasizes several safety warnings. It highlights the use of flammable refrigerant and states that repairs should only be performed by trained service personnel. Refrigerant tubing should not be punctured. Users are warned against overloading electrical outlets, using extension cords, and plugging/unplugging the cord with wet hands. The unit must be properly grounded. Users should not attempt to remove or repair components unless instructed by the factory, nor should they hang on the doors. Flammable or explosive gases or liquids should not be stored inside the unit, and the electrical cord should not be altered or tampered with. After unplugging the unit, a minimum wait of 10 minutes is required before plugging it back in to prevent compressor damage.
