Overview

The Aventon Pace 350/500 Electric Bicycle is designed to provide an enjoyable and efficient riding experience, incorporating both pedal assistance and a throttle for varied control. This ebike is intended for use by individuals 18 years and older, emphasizing safety, proper operation, and regular maintenance to ensure longevity and prevent accidents.

Function Description

The Aventon Pace 350/500 operates as an electric bicycle, meaning it can be ridden like a traditional bicycle but also offers electric assistance. The primary modes of electric propulsion are pedal assist and throttle.

  • Pedal Assist System (PAS): When using pedal assist, an electric motor supplements the rider's own effort. To engage PAS, the rider simply starts pedaling and can then use the "up" or "down" arrows on the handlebar controls to increase or decrease the amount of assistance. The display unit shows the current level of assist, typically ranging from 0 (no assist) to 5 (max assist). The motor stops assisting when the rider stops pedaling, squeezes the brake levers, or releases the throttle.
  • Throttle: The ebike is equipped with a thumb switch throttle, usually mounted near the rider's left thumb. This allows the rider to propel the bike without pedaling. To use the throttle, the rider should start pedaling and then gradually apply the throttle. Once the bike is moving on throttle power, the rider can stop pedaling entirely and use the thumb switch to control the speed. The throttle also disengages when the brake levers are squeezed.
  • Braking System: The ebike features front and rear brakes, which are critical for safety. The brake levers contain safety power cutoff switches that disable the hub motor's assistance when applied. Riders should apply the rear brake first, then the front brake, to maintain control and prevent falls.
  • Gears (Derailleur): On the right side of the handlebar, next to the brake lever, there are derailleur levers (7-1 for Pace 350, 8-1 for Pace 500). These allow the rider to shift the chain to different gears, optimizing the riding experience for various terrains and speeds.
  • Display Unit: The handlebar-mounted display provides essential information to the rider, including battery level, current speed, average speed, maximum speed, error codes, pedal assist level, walk mode status, backlight status, distance (current trip and system mileage), and real-time voltage output. The "M" button is used to turn the display on/off and to cycle through different trip information (Trip A, Trip B, Voltage, Timer). Holding both "UP" and "DOWN" arrows allows access to a different menu for changing settings like backlight level, units (km/h or mile/h), and max speed. A long press of the "Down" button while in PAS 1-5 triggers Walk Mode.
  • Battery: The ebike is powered by a rechargeable lithium-ion battery. The battery can be charged on or off the bike and should be adequately charged and locked onto the frame before use. The battery has a power button and LED lights to indicate its charge level.

Usage Features

The Aventon Pace 350/500 is designed for versatile use, with features that enhance both safety and convenience.

  • Pre-Ride Safety Check: Before each ride, it is crucial to perform a safety check. This includes inspecting the brakes for proper function and tightness, checking tires for correct inflation and condition, ensuring all accessories and hardware are secured, and verifying that the handlebar, grips, and seat are properly adjusted and tightened. The electrical system, including brake lever cutoff switches, pedal assistance, and throttle, should also be checked for correct operation.
  • Riding Conditions: Riders are advised to obey all road laws, ride predictably, use correct hand signals, and concentrate on the path ahead to avoid hazards. Extra caution is recommended in wet conditions, which require decreased speed and increased braking distances. Night riding necessitates reflective clothing, safety lights, and familiar, well-lit roads.
  • Helmet Use: Always wear an approved bicycle helmet that covers the forehead, following all manufacturer instructions for fit and care.
  • Power Control Familiarization: Users should become accustomed to the ebike's power control system, including pedal assistance and throttle operation, in a controlled setting before riding in riskier conditions. Always start with the lowest assist level until comfortable with the power.
  • Battery Management: The battery should be turned off when pushing or carrying the bike manually to prevent accidental acceleration. It should also be turned off and, if possible, removed and stored in a temperature-controlled location when parking for security or long-term storage.
  • Parking and Storage: When parking outdoors in rain, the ebike should be moved to a dry location as soon as possible to prevent corrosion. In public places, the bike must be parked according to local regulations and should be locked to prevent theft.
  • Transport: When transporting the ebike on a vehicle rack, it is recommended to unlock and remove the battery to reduce weight and protect it from damage. Avoid transporting the bike on a vehicle rack during rain to prevent water damage to electrical components.

Maintenance Features

Regular maintenance is essential for the safe and optimal performance of the Aventon Pace 350/500.

  • Professional Assistance: Aventon strongly recommends having a certified, reputable bike mechanic perform assembly, adjustments, and maintenance, especially if the owner lacks the necessary experience, skill, or tools.
  • Regular Inspections: Key components like hardware, drivetrain (chain, freewheel, chainring, derailleur), wheels (trueness, spoke tension), frame, brakes (pads, cables, tension), and electrical cables should be inspected regularly.
  • Cleaning and Lubrication: The frame should be cleaned with a damp cloth. The drivetrain, crankset, and pedals should be cleaned and lubricated. Brake and shift cables also require cleaning.
  • Tire Care: Tires should be inflated to the recommended pressure (30-50 PSI) and checked for wear, bulges, or damage before each ride. Punctured or damaged tires and inner tubes must be replaced immediately.
  • Battery Charging and Storage: The battery should be charged indoors in a cool, dry, and ventilated area, away from direct sunlight, dirt, or debris. Charging temperatures should be between 50°F – 77°F (10°C – 25°C). The charger indicator light will be red during charging and turn green when complete. The charger should be unplugged from the battery within one hour of full charge. For long-term storage (over two weeks), the battery should be charged to approximately 75%, removed from the bike, and stored in a dry, climate-controlled indoor location (50°F - 70°F or 10°C - 25°C), with monthly checks and recharges to 75% if needed.
  • Error Detection System: The ebike is equipped with an error detection system that displays error codes on the display unit in case of an electronic control system fault. If an error code appears, operation should cease immediately, and Aventon Support should be contacted. Common error codes indicate issues such as abnormal current, throttle fault, motor phase/hall fault, brake switch fault, overheat protection, motor lock protection, over-voltage protection, and communication fault.
  • Component Wear: Due to higher speeds and weight compared to regular bicycles, components like tires, brake pads and rotors, suspension forks, spokes, wheels, and the battery are subject to higher wear. Riders should pay attention to signs of wear, such as cracks, scratches, or changes in color or operation, and replace worn components immediately to prevent loss of function and potential injury.
  • Post-Break-in Tune-up: After an initial break-in period of 50-100 miles (80-160 km), cables, spokes, and the chain may stretch, and bolted connections can loosen. A certified bike mechanic should perform a tune-up after this period.
