TABLE OF APPROPRIATE GREASE LUBRICANTS FOR RING BEARINGS AND OPEN GEARS
The turntable bearing area is a
potential pinch point.
Before
doing any maintenance or
inspection on turntable bearing,
lower boom and attachment to the
ground, shut machine down to a
zero energy state and put ignition
key in your pocket
.
Large diameter bearings are designed and manufactured with a certain clearance in order to obtain
smooth rotation with low drive torque requirements. While BARKO slewing ring bearings require
minimal attention, what little they are given will pay big dividends in long life, high performance, and
trouble-free service.
Ÿ Lubrication of the bearing is recommended every 100 operating hours under “normal”
working conditions. Increase the frequency under extreme conditions.
GEAR
Ÿ See Table-1 for appropriate OPEN GEAR grease.
BEARING
LUBRICATION
Ÿ Idle equipment should not be neglected. Grease dries out and “breathing,” due to
temperature changes, can cause condensation within the bearing. Whether used or not, the
bearing should have grease introduced every 6 months.
Ÿ The bearing should then be rotated a few revolutions to coat all surfaces with fresh grease.
Ÿ See Table-1 for appropriate INTERNAL BEARING grease.
Ÿ It is recommended that grease be introduced at the point of mesh of pinion and gear every 8
hours with small amounts of lubricant.

These lubricants are the bearing manufacturer recommenced lubricants
under NORMAL operating conditions.
The lubricant properties such as oil viscosity
extreme pressure additives, resistance to water washout, low water absorption, corrosion
inhibition, and oxidation resistance found in this list of greases provides an example of
some of the properties readily available in the market.
