User’s Handbook 36 Status: 07-2008
7.1. Choosing a location for the smoke
alarm
NOTE: We recommend that several smoke alarms be
installed in the house or building. In order to achieve the
minimum of protection, it is advisable to install one smoke alarm
on each floor of a multi-storey building.
WARNING: The smoke alarm should be mounted in the
approach area to the bedrooms (staircase, corridor, entrance
hall, etc.). Care should be taken to ensure that the alarm can
easily be heard in the bedrooms. If an unsuitable location is
chosen, the alarm may be largely ineffective if a fire breaks out.
In this event, vital life-saving time in which to bring the occupants
to safety may be reduced.
TIP: To be certain that the location is acoustically
satisfactory, the alarm must be function-tested.
