Overview

The S80 is a door control unit designed for use with Becker door drives that feature mechanical limit switching. It is available with either an MLS Basic Card or an MLS Professional Card, offering varying levels of functionality. The control unit is intended for professional installation and operation, with specific safety measures and guidelines to ensure proper use and prevent injury or damage.

Function Description

The S80 control unit manages the movement of a door, allowing for both manual and automatic operation depending on the installed card and DIP switch settings.

  • MLS Basic Card: This card provides fundamental control capabilities. In UP direction, it can operate in either "dead-man mode" (requiring continuous button press) or "automatic mode" (single press for full travel), configurable via DIP switch 1. In the DOWN direction, only "dead-man mode" is possible. The operating cams S7 and S8 on the drive actuate indicator outputs.
  • MLS Professional Card: This card expands functionality significantly. It supports automatic ascent (UP) and descent (DOWN), anti-pull-in cable safety, and a debounced slack rope switch. It offers various button input configurations (UP/STOP/DOWN/STOP) and enables automatic closing and partial opening functions. The MLS Professional Card also integrates with a wider range of safety devices, including pneumatic safety edges, electrical safety edges, optoelectronic safety edges (FRABA OSE), and photoelectric barriers. It provides outputs for yard lights, traffic lights/door status indicators, and warning lamps. The operating cam S7 serves as a pre-limit switch, and if "Partial opening" is activated, S8 defines the top end limit.

Both cards feature LED indicators for power supply, UP/DOWN movement, operating status, error codes, safety edge status, and pre-limit switch status, aiding in diagnostics and operation.

Usage Features

The S80 control unit offers several features to enhance door operation and safety:

  • Operator Controls: The unit includes UP, STOP, and DOWN buttons.
    • UP Button: With the MLS Professional Card, a single press opens the door automatically to the top end limit. If pressed during closing, the door stops and then moves up after a brief delay. With the MLS Basic Card, its function depends on DIP switch 1: either "dead-man mode" or "automatic mode."
    • STOP Button: Immediately halts door movement during opening or closing.
    • DOWN Button: With the MLS Professional Card and a safety edge, a single press closes the door automatically. Without a safety edge, or with the MLS Basic Card, it operates in "dead-man mode," requiring continuous pressing. If a safety device is triggered during closing, the door stops and may reverse to clear the obstacle or return to the top end limit, depending on settings.
  • Emergency OFF Button (optional): Disconnects power to the drive, bringing the door to a sustained halt. The door can only be moved again after the button is unlocked.
  • Master Switch (optional): Allows for complete disconnection of the system from the mains.
  • External Control Sensors and Safety Devices: The S80 supports various external connections:
    • Voltage Output: Provides 24 V DC / 200 mA for external control devices, protected by a fine-wire fuse.
    • EMERGENCY STOP Button: Can be connected to terminals A2 and B2, requiring removal of a jumper.
    • External Triple Push Button: Connects to terminals A3, B3, A4, and B4, mirroring the functionality of the integrated controls.
    • Wicket Door Switch / Spring Break Safety Device: Can be wired in series with the STOP button of an external 3-way pushbutton switch across terminals A3 and B4.
    • Induction Loop: Connects to terminals A4 and B4 for automatic door opening, ideally configured to provide a continuous UP command.
    • Slack Rope Switch: Connects to terminals A10 and B10 (SCHLAFFSEIL/ÜL), stopping the door instantly if activated.
    • Pull-in Safety Cable/Switch: Connects to terminals A5 and B5 (STOP-UP) to prevent upward movement if triggered, requiring manual DOWN movement to reset.
    • External 1-way Switch (MLS Professional only): Connects to terminals A13 and B13 (IMP) for sequential UP - STOP - DOWN - STOP commands.
    • Partial Opening (MLS Professional only): A switch connected to terminals A11 and B11 activates this function, using limit switch S8 as the top end limit.
    • Automatic Closing: Activated via a switch connected to terminals A12 and B12 (AUTO/WZL). The door closes automatically after a set time (Z4). An early warning function (Z3) can be enabled. A timer module can be added for variable reclosing times.
    • Photoelectric Barrier (MLS Professional only): Connects to terminals A7 and B7 (PB). If interrupted during downward movement, the door stops and reopens. If interrupted when open, the automatic closing time (Z4) can be reduced.
    • Safety Edge (MLS Professional only): Supports pneumatic, electric, or optoelectronic (FRABA OSE) safety edges. The control unit integrates a self-monitoring sensor. DIP switches 1.1, 2.1, and 2.2 are used to adapt the unit to the specific safety edge type.
  • Radio Control System (MLS Professional Card only): The S80 can be retrofitted with a 1-channel or 4-channel radio remote control system. The receiver board plugs into slot J1.
    • 1-channel: Operates like a 1-way pushbutton switch (UP - STOP - DOWN - STOP sequence).
    • 4-channel: Provides dedicated functions for UP, STOP, DOWN, and a sequential UP - STOP - DOWN - STOP command.
    • Programming: Hand-held transmitter codes are programmed by pressing a button on the receiver until an LED flashes, then pressing the transmitter button. Up to 60 transmitter codes can be stored.

Maintenance Features

  • Diagnostics: LED indicators on both the basic control unit and the MLS Professional Card provide visual cues for normal operation, setting mode, and various fault conditions (e.g., door running time exceeded, pre-limit switch testing issues, safety device faults, internal communication errors, obstacle detection). These LEDs are crucial for troubleshooting.
  • Troubleshooting Guide: The manual includes a "What should I do if...?" section, offering common faults and their possible causes and remedies, such as checking supply voltage, fuses, emergency OFF button, drive safety circuits, and terminal connections.
  • Control Card Replacement: The S80 allows for easy conversion or upgrade by changing plug-in control cards (MLS Basic Card or MLS Professional Card). This modularity simplifies maintenance and upgrades.
  • Safety Checks: Regular checks of safety devices by an expert are mandated (before commissioning, at least annually, or every six months for non-self-testing light barriers). A test report must be filed.
  • Housing Access: The cover can be offset and held by two screws to facilitate access to operator controls and indicator lamps during installation and maintenance.
  • IP 65 Protection: Proper refitting of the cover, ensuring clean seals and correct mounting, is essential to maintain the IP 65 degree of housing protection.
